View Full Version : How big of a deal is High Altitude Mode?

I am interested in getting a Marantz 8600, but I live in Denver. I noticed that some projectors have a high altitude mode, and some don't. Some specifically recommend against it at certain altitudes. The 8600 doesn't say anything either way. I did a lot of searches, and one user that lives in Denver used another (slightly higher end) Marantz unit, and said he has no problems even though it doesn't have a high altitude mode.

The price is really great on these now for refurb, but the lamp replacement cost is too much if the high altitude will shorten lamp life.

Any thoughts?

First thing I would do is call Marantz to see what they say. If a high altitude setting isn't incorporated into this projector then don't worry about it. It's been engineered to operate without it, as your friend said. If it has it, turn it on. Warranty sometimes will be void by not using HA setting if the projector needs service.
High altitude mode increases the fan to compensate for thinner atmosphere therefore providing adequate cooling to your internal electronics. HA mode increases fan noise also, which can be annoying to some. Lastly, High Altitude settings can be anywhere from 3000ft on up depending on the projector manufacturer. Hope this helps.

Thanks Ron,

I emailed Marantz, and they said that there is no high altitude mode for this unit, but the design engineer said it was designed to be fine below 6562'. I guess I am good to go. (Denver 5200')
