Good thing they waited till after the Gears 2 rush settles a tad. Major update + Gears 2 would bring Live to it's knees I'm sure.....Here's some hand on impressions.

"The first thing you notice while using the new UI is how fluid and dynamic it is. Microsoft wasn't content to just create some static screens and call it a day. Many of the menus have multiple animations and 3D elements at work, which give the software life. Your avatar sits on the menu, fully rendered, loafing around on your screen. Moving from section to section is so fluid that you stop thinking about what your doing with the controller.

Theme junkies will be glad to know that Themes 2.0 for NXE are far more integrated into the UI than before. Instead of a background and matching color scheme, Themes 2.0 now has features like 3D renderings instead of tiles behind each menu object, that relate to the theme in some way.

he menus for creating parties are pretty simple, as you only need to select create party or invite friends and add friends from a list.

Lastly, the Video and Game Marketplaces has been revamped and are pretty well thought out. There are multiple ways to search for content, whether it be XBLA games, XNA games, additional game content, or video, you can search by name, genre or category, and the list continuously repopulates itself as you refine your search string letter by letter. Featured titles appear in the front menu."

The top addition on my list is the ability to rip games to the HDD. Finally the jet engine can rest!

anyone have a ballpark idea of how much space a game ripped from disc will take up on the HDD?

Between 5 and 8 GB.

Time to start looking for a bigger hard drive.

Time to start looking for a bigger hard drive.

You don't have to keep the games stored on the HDD. Just delete them after you finish them. If you play multiple games at a time then you might need to step up to a new HDD.

Does this mean XBL will be down for 24 hours again like the last update they had?

Supposedly that last update was to help prepare their servers for the NXE.

Will this new dashboard take up hard drive space?

Will this new dashboard take up hard drive space?

128 MB.
Not clear yet what for. Different theories floating about:
1- 128 MB needed to hold the NXE DL before flashing the dash
2- 128 MB needed to hold the NXE software itself
3- 128 MB (or more) to hold cache data and Dashboard Apps

Case 2 would imply the Dashboard won't work (right?) without the added storage, case 3 would imply it works but not all features would be available offline.
We do know that (obviously) some functions need a HDD.
