View Full Version : Benefits of upconverting DVD player?

After viewing over 50 threads & not fidning an answer, I thought I'd give a new thread a try.

I have an Optoma H30 currently directly fed by an older Sony DVD player via component outs. Given the res. of this projector, would I see any benefits from switching to a decent upconverting player?

Let me know if this should be in a different hardware forum).

Thanks!
Rob

I do'n think so because the projector would then have to scale the image back down and the more scaling the worse the picture looks. I have seen people say they like the look of this double scaling better, but logically it makes no sense.

I agree. With a native resolution of 800x600 I see no reason to use an upconverting DVD player.

wait, I see a benefit in my upconvertor.....

My PJ is 800X600, and I use my A2 to upconvert, and I see a big difference when compared to 'SD'.

True, I am not getting true HD, but I am getting 600 compared to 480, which is better.

Up Converting dvd players will ONLY help with projectors that can receive the higher resolution result via a digital input (HDMI or DVI).

My experience is that component output does not transport the Up Converted higher resolution signal - it requires use of HDMI output to your projectors digital input.

I often suggest that folk take full advantage of what they have before spending the cash to upgrade but in your case I think the projector upgrade is warranted depending on your screen size.

We personally found that 480 lines of resolution simply cannot be stretched across a 10 ft diagonal and produce a watchable image and we were amazed at the increase in image quality to near HD using Up Conversion with digital HDMI link to our 720p projector.

Good call! I didn't look at the inputs available on the H30...

Good point as well you can not upscale over component.

Thanks very much for all of the replies!
Can anyone steer me to some info on exactly what the different output options are for the H30 ("window"; "4x3", "native 16x9" etc.). I know they alter the image, but how? (KISIS - Keep It Simple I'm Stupid).

^ Nope. Your grammar proves that point wrong. Maybe a little ignorant in regards to AV equipment but definitely not stupid.

Basically you're talking about altering the aspect ratio of the image, which in a nutshell just means your changing the shape of the image.

EDIT: I'm not sure why I put "nutshell" in there. That's exactly what's happening. It's been a long week and my 401(k) went kaput so I'm not all there so to speak.
