I will be upgrading from a 37" Toshiba Regza 720p set. I have been looking at these two sets

LN46A550 for $1500 (http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Samsung-46-Series-5-LCD-HDTV-LN46A550/sem/rpsm/oid/206153/catOid/-12867/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do)

46RV530U for $1300 (http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Toshiba-46-Regza-LCD-HDTV-46RV530U/sem/rpsm/oid/206161/catOid/-12869/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do)

(Should I take the prices off?)

this tv is going in my bedroom and I sit about 8 feet away max. I do about half gaming half HDTV. My 360 doesn't have HDMI either. Which one should I get?

Edit: I have picked another TV I might want to get. The Samsung is 200 bucks more but it can do 1080p over VGA. The Toshiba can't do 1080p over vga but I would trade in my current 360 for a newer one with HDMI with the money a save. And the Toshiba has 14bit processing. Now which is the best option?

get the 550, and look for the 10% coupon from Circuit City to save an extra $150. and if you can't find one, buy one off ebay for a few dollars, you'll still end up saving way more than it will cost you...

http://cgi.ebay.com/3-CIRCUIT-CITY-Coupons-40-OFF-2-10-OFF-FREE-SHIP_W0QQitemZ380070654671QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item3800706546 71&_trkparms=72%3A1205%7C39%3A1%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

and they're legit, i've downloaded and used them on my 550 and on my Zune, even though they clearly say copies will not be accepted...

Sitting 8ft away, and being willing to spend $1600, I would actually be looking at the 50" version of the Panasonics, or the 50" plasma version of the Samsung. The 42" I watch from 6.5ft away has become a bit too small lately, so I couldn't imagine it at 8ft. :) A quick look finds the Samsung PN50A550 for $1700 from a national retailer and would be the first thing I'd give a serious look at.

it all depends on the person...

considering the fact that the OP is moving up from a 37", the 9" difference would be a huge one, so the 46" should be fine. i personally went from a 36" Sony Wega to a 50" Sony LCD about 3 years ago, but after a few weeks i decided that it was actually too big for me, so i decided to go with a 42" (Panny plasma) instead...

you are right though, considering how inexpensive large LCD's and Plasma's are, you could spend only a few hundred dollars more and got something larger...

bottom line, the 46" would definitely satisfy you, but for how long depends on you...
