We have gotten Blade Runner and Stargate. You could also include Transformers, Ironman and a whole lot more as SciFi. Really SciFi is is either the number one or 2 genera on BD.

But I still agree with the OP that they need to start churning out more of the good classics

I'd also like to see the ST series come out on BD. Now there's some collecting...

2001, Terminators (films and series) are already out.

Willow? You might as well have put LOTR on there too. :D

I'm sure they would want to use the upcoming Star Trek movie as a tie-in if they're considering any BD releases. Whether they will or won't, I don't know, but I wouldn't expect anything until at least then.

The Abyss still needs a new transfer AFAIK. We'll probably have to wait until Avatar is finished so that James Cameron can supervise it. Come to think of it, that could be another tie-in opportunity,

What's Avatar?

It's James Cameron's next movie, due out in December 2009. It was shot in 3D and is supposed to be pretty special.

Its the thirtieth anniversaries of Star Trek - The Motion Picture and Alien next year....Perfect time to release both those movies and maybe a ten disc set of the Trek movies especially with the new one coming out in the summer of 2009...Maybe an Autumn 2009 11 disc ultimate boxed set of Trek movies.

I know this might be a mixed bag for you, but I personally like "Mission to Mars"....to me a modern classic.....Also throw in Outland, but that one is not as special. I will try to think of more "good" sci-fi for this thread....

For sci-fi films (as opposed to obvious fantasy films) in high def, we've already got "2001," "Close Encounters," the "Terminator" trio, "ID4," "I Robot," "Men in Black," "Starship Troopers," "Predator," "Blade Runner," "Dune," "Cloverfield," "Dark City," "The Fifth Element," "The Host," "Iron Man," "The Matrix," "The Thing," "Total Recall," and probably many more I can't think of.

I'd like to see the original three "Star Wars" on BD and "Contact." The latter, I believe, is on the way. The former, who knows.

Yeah, but he also asked about all of the Trek movies. Does anyone really think there were ten good movies in that group?

FoxyMulder

I'm hoping for Forbidden Planet, Them and of course the Star Wars movies as well as the Trek movies and Alien movies and the already mentioned longer cut and theatrical cut of The Abyss using seamless branching.

I wouldn't mind a better quality edition of the longer cut of Stargate and a much better edition of Terminator 2 and Total Recall while we're at it. ( don't mention the UK imports - I mean a restoration for both and much better quality )

What does that mean?

i think he means (and i'd agree with him) that the bar isn't very high if one considers willow a good sci-fi movie... ;)

aren't a lot of the movies being mentioned here really "fantasy-adventure" movies?

Exactly - The Host is a monster movie, hardly sci-fi

Well,
Maybe you guys aren't really a "Willow fan", but that's ok. One more sci-fi flick that's fantasy is "The Dark Crystal". It already has a decent transfer to super-bit, but the audio needs some serious help. Basically, any sci-fi movie that's in a 2.35:1 aspect that's "good" (and good can mean anything to anybody) has my vote to go to blu. I'm biased on 2.35 because that's my screen;) Can anyone else come up with some more "sci-fi" or "fantasy" films that deserve attention?

"Science fiction: n., a form of fiction that draws imaginatively on scientific knowledge and speculation in its plot, setting, theme, etc." --Random House Unabridged Dictionary

OK, I thought we were using this interpretation of the term "science fiction," without resorting to pure fantasy. But as several folks pointed out, most fantasy stories might be seen as a broad form of sci-fi. If we apply "sci-fi" strictly, though, I've always thought of it as something that refers to a story line based on current scientific principals, yet a story that hasn't ever really happened (yet). In other words, sci-fi is about something possible, just not something that's ever happened, so the storyteller hopes you can buy it for real. As for fantasy, the storyteller doesn't care if you believe it can happen or not. He just wants you to totally suspend your disbelief and go with the idea, whether it's possible or not.

For example, "Jurassic Park" is based on what we know of genetics, DNA, and as such I'd classify it as sci-fi. Certainly, "2001" and "Contact" are pure sci-fi, with much of "2001" already coming to pass.

Monsters? I mentioned "The Host" earlier because creatures mutating to gigantic sizes seems possible to me. But Jasons and Michael Myers coming back from the dead over and over or people coming out of our dreams to terrorize us. Fun stuff, to be sure, but as much pure fantasy as "LOTR" and "Willow." :)

Speaking of which, I'd love to see "Frankenstein" and esp. "The Bride of Frankenstein" in high def. And, yeah, these are two characters I could see as sci-fi creasts, even though they are the most traditional of monsters.

True, and Ironman is not a good movie, its a GREAT movie.

I confess - I did not see Ironman although I remember it getting good reviews. I haven't read comic books since elementary school and don't plan on watching movies based on them.

Before any one says "graphic novels", I say "balderdash". ;)

In the eye of the beholder and all that. :)

That's one of those movies that I personally never got into. I starts off good but when Dreyfuss starts playing with mashed potatoes I lose interest... :D

Can anyone else come up with some more "sci-fi" or "fantasy" films that deserve attention? Is contact out on Blu-ray yet? If not, then that's some good, thought provoking sci-fi that I'd like to see in high def (and yes, it is 2.35). I haven't read comic books since elementary school and don't plan on watching movies based on them.So you're really not going to watch 'The Dark Knight' solely because it is based on comic books?
