Hi, ok I bought the xbox arcade console and also component cables.
I have the xbox hooked up to my Optoma HD700X Projector, but whenever I try to switch to 720p in the xbox dashboard the screen goes blank for a second then comes back on and asks if I want to keep the new setting, I say Yes, but then the projector starts scanning for a video source again, and when it finds the xbox again, the resolution is 480i again..??? Why??The xbox dashboard says I have not switched on the switch on the cable to HD...?
The component cable Im using does not have that switch on the side as shown on the dashboard diagram..Do I really need to go buy official cables?
Cant the xbox realise Im using component cable capable of HD?? LOL!

Uh, its not Microsoft's fault if a third-party cable vendor neglects to provide a switch to tell the 360 there's an HD display on the other end of the cables. Most third-party cables work fine so do the math...

So, no, you don't have to buy the *official* cable but you do have to buy a "good-enough" cable.

Last time I was at my local Toys R us, "official" cables were marked down to $9.99.

Why aren't you using the HDMI? Do the cables you bought have the HDTV/TV switch?

As others have mentioned, the 360 cannot do both standard 480i/p and HD resolutions 720P or 1080i/p using the same cable, unless it has a switch to select between standard and HD. I can't say that I've seen a component cable that doesn't have a switch, though it is theoretically possible to make one. Are you sure you have a component cable? It should have 6 rca phono cables outputting. The component group has Green, Blue and Red connectors for the Y, Pb and Pr component signals. There is also a yellow connector for composite. The audio group has red and white connectors for left and right stereo audio. A "COMPOSITE" cable will not have the green, blue and red rca connectors, but it will have a yellow connector.

I had thought that at one point some third party manufacturer was selling a component cable for the Xbox 360 without the switch. My understanding was that it was subsequently recalled, since it obviously doesn't provide the correct functionality.
Anyhow, the solution here is to buy a different cable.
