View Full Version : Wireless booster??
As some of you fellow COD4 players know, I have complained many times of having severe lag when I play. The best signal I ever get is 3 green bars, and most of the time its in the yellow or even red :( It is impossible to have even a decent game when that is as good as it gets! Needless to say that gets VERY frustrating  Especially when my K/D ratio is usually around 1:3
My internet setup is this- I have wireless coming into my home via a wireless USB adaptor that plugs into my desktop. I use my desktop as a bridge to my 360 and PS3 via a ~50ft ethernet cable (out of my desktop) that I plug directly into either one (no router or splitter). Is it possible for me to even use a booster with my setup or am sh!t out of luck?
If I could use one, whats a good one to look at?
Thanks!!!
For the cost of any kind of booster or antenae, you could buy a router. Linksys WRT54G is $44.95 at Wal Mart, and works fantastic. Running bridged mode tends to hammer your latency.
Also, if you do it this way, you could still run bridged. Just run the ethernet cable from the PC to the WAN port, put the settings on DHCP, and run the cable out.
That USB adapter is killing you as well. USB is not the fastest thing for data latency.

The USB adapter is all I can use with Sprint :( Since it is USB, I can't think of any other way to set it up other than bridge it.
Slordak 10-13-08, 11:39 AM It sounds like you need a new ISP or new method of receiving service, if indeed you're restricted to using a proprietary piece of hardware that you have to bridge through your PC in order to share.
bryansj 10-13-08, 12:32 PM I think you are SOL using that Sprint USB wireless modem. If you had wireless from your 360 to your PC then there would be some room for improvement, but you seem to be connected the best you can do (assuming your PC isn't a dinosaur). I would guess that a PC version of COD4 multiplayer would have similar lag issues.
Slordak has the best advice.
I think I can still get cable internet thru Charter in my area. Im going to check and see if so and how much since im tight for $ right now.
The way it is now is the best I can do using the USB modem.
From your post it seems like you are using a wireless card from a cell carrier. Please tell me that isn't the case.

Yep :p A Sierra Wireless Aircard 595U from Sprint. Yes it sucks for online gaming :o
Im going to make a call tomorrow and see if I can go back to the cable internet that I used to have. Its a 10mbps service so surely that would make a difference, in a good way.

You would think but I have heard Charter sucks too.

Charter was fantastic for us for over 5 years. Then, we moved to Stevens Point, WI. Something is wrong with the whole line on our block, and it was terrible! I couldn't get my HD channels without freezing and crap audio, and my internet connection dropped regularly. We went to AT&T Yahoo DSL and all my media comes from net sources and my media server.
Point is, Charter can be god or bad depending on where you are. However, for cable internet they are one of the better companies.
yeah that's not gonna cut it . Time to make that call:)
Crazy thing is, right after I posted that I decided to go play a few rounds. My friend was browsing the internet on my desktop so I figured the lag was gonna be terrible. To my surprise, I had 3 bars for about 4 rounds of FFA and had my best game ever of 25-8  After that it went in the red and I turned it off...
What it must be like to have 5 bars all the time!

That is pretty much the only other option I have :(

Bumping this back up. Any idea if there is a way to plug this thing directly into the 360 and make it work? Anyone ever used one of these things besides me??
