I just bought a 1271Q, my first ever projector, and realize I'm in for a thrill ride. I've been reading as much as I can here and at curtpalme's page. But I still have many questions. I'll ask them a few at a time and hope that some kind soul will take a few minutes and send an answer.

1. I've read several times about getting into Service Man Mode by pressing "test" five times (or five seconds, depending on who's talking) but I can't seem to do it. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

2. I set up the pj and screen based on the 1271Q manual but I'm having a dickens of a time getting the convergence right. I suspect I have to adjust the angle of the lenses. Is there good documentation somewhere that explains how to do this?

3. Further, I'm surprised that even though I think I set up pj/screen exactly as the manual says, the image doesn't even come close to filling up the screen without having to resize the RGB to maximum (not a good thing I gather). Is the set up in the 1271Q Sony manual correct?

4. curtpalme's site is so vast, I'm lost. Does anyone know of a good single point source for 1271q info?

Thanks in advance for your help.

I have a 1272Q, which is basically the same. I have not done it in a while, but my recollection is that you just hold down the test button for 5 seconds or more, and that it works best just after you have turned the projector on.

Some of the other issues may relate to having the projector too close to the screen. There is a program called pjcalc which is designed to tell you how far back to position it depending on your screen size. Or, If you can easily move it, just move it back and try it. That may address several of your issues and questions.

Since this is not a brand new projector, it is not getting the attention it once did. You may want to search the archives for 1271(or 2) covergence or setup and see what you get. You could also try e-mailing Curt and see if he has anything.

Hope this helps.

I'm going to sound like a complete A-hole here, but my site is ridiculously well laid out as far as info goes. (in my opinion, thanks Kal!) There is a whole section on the 12XX with manuals, tech info, etc.

While BL's intentions are good, NO, DON'T EMAIL ME just to ask for a link because you want me to show you where something is on the site. I don't have the time for that. If you have a specific question about buying parts or troubleshooting, fire away.

Unfortunately, giving free advice doesn't pay the bills, and I've found myself spending countless hours recently giving tech support, only to have the customer reply 'thanks, I fixed it myself' or 'I found the part cheaper on ebay'.

All of the questions that you posted above are in the manuals which are on the website.

Rant off, have fun with it..:)

Sorry, Curt, I can definitely understand not wanting to get more e-mail, especially if the material is easily findable.

1.) Hold down test(low left corner of keypad) until a menu comes up asking if you want to enter serviceman's mode.

2.) You may need the proper lens spacers for your screen size. Or you can get by by doing the following:
http://www.curtpalme.com/Sony125x_SpacerMod1.shtm

3.) RGB adjustment does not actually change the raster size, so you need to see how big your rasters are, and make sure they are large and centered. This is related to 2.) Also see: http://www.curtpalme.com/TubeRasterSetup.shtm

4.)http://www.curtpalme.com/Sony125x.shtm

There is no way around it, you are going to have to do a lot of reading and learning to set up the projector correctly yourself. It may be over-welming at first, but you'll get the hang of it.

It seems that there might be some confusion. The 1271Q is quite different from the 1272 in that many of the features are missing, including going into service mode, displaying a test pattern, etc. I've downloaded both manuals and have read them cover to cover. I've also read a ton of info here and on curt's site. In many cases, info specific to the 1272 is being ascribed to the 1271, hence a lot of my confusion. As for Curt's rant, it is totally unfounded. I had no intention of emailing him. Also, from a newbie's perspective, it is overwhelming. I didn't say it was incomplete, or bad, or anything else. I said it was vast and that I was lost. That points the critisism to me, not you. Your site is extremely valuable, but again, I had difficulty finding 1271 specific info.
