hey guys, i want to know, which HD cable box, NOT HD DVR box.

Which brand of their HD cable boxes is the best? the latest one they gave me (like 5-6 months ago ) when i returned my scientific atlanta DVR box ( didnt want DVR anymore) , they gave me a Samsung HD Cable box, i have a question, which one of time warner's cable box gives the best picture quality? the scientific atlanta or the samsung ones? (or maybe there is some other brand i dont know about)

Thanks

I don't think any box is inherently better. At least not in picture quality that you're going to notice, provided it has HDMI or component outputs.

The latest Scientific Atlanta non DVR box is the 4250HD (and HDC if you want a cablecard, too), according to the site. In my area, they also had Pioneer (3510, I think). I didn't even know TWC used Samsung, so I can't comment on them.

However, if your local office doesn't have it in stock, they're really not going to special order one. When I first got an HD box, they only had a Pioneer box onhand. It crapped out a month later, but then they had a Scientific Atlanta (3250HD.) I didn't notice any picture difference.

You really don't have a choice!!

Whatever your local office carries is what you get!!

Sometimes they'll let you pick and choose if they have more than one in stock right there. Mine did, at least. They offered me a direct swap to an identical Pioneer, but I didn't trust it, so I got to take home the SA.

But yeah, if all they have is, say, the Samsung, you get the Samsung.

Flip a coin.

Or try one out and then the other, if they'll let you. The beauty of a cable box rented from a cable company is that you can exchange them when you want, within reason.

i had the SA one.. whatever ill keep the samsung one i guess if theres no difference in PQ.

i have a question, right now in my apartment, the main cable in that comes from the wal is splited using a simple spliter like this one :

http://www.summitsource.com/images/products/SP2532.jpg

one end goes into my living room to the cable box and the other one goes into my bedroom into the time warner high speed cable modem, well thats how its been up until not so long ago, now what i did is (my brother got a TV in the other bedroom so in order to get signal for him, this is what i did )

in my bedroom where the second cable is coming (remember from the main spliter) which is supposed to be going into my high speed cable modem, so instead of connecting it to a modem, i bought ANOTHER one of these:

http://www.summitsource.com/images/products/SP2532.jpg

and i connected the cable coming from the main spliter into the IN on the new spliter in the living room and then i have 2 OUTputs, one goes into my high speed cable modem, and now then other goes into my brother's bedroom to give it's tv a signal.

Well, so i did that however the picture on my brother's tv was like scrambled and not right, so what i did is i bought a signal booster by motorolla , heres a link to what i bought:

http://broadband.motorola.com/consumers/products/signal_booster/

so now the spliter that i have in my bedroom, like i said one OUT goes into my high speed cable modem and now the other OUT goes into this motorolla booster, and from the OUT of the motorola booster i have the cable going into my brother's bedroom where the tv now works good.

My question is, sometimes i expiriecne poor picture quality on my living room HDTV (samsung 52" A650), Its mostly a great picture but its not like perfect, now my question is, since i split the signal like the way i described above, is it correctly set up? does that affect the picture quality on my Living room HDTV?

if it was me, i would
cable line>2 way split>modem and amp>amp 2 two way split> 2 tv's.

Yeah, a TWC installer told me that the cable modem should only have one splitter between it and the main feed.

Yeah, a TWC installer told me that the cable modem should only have one splitter between it and the main feed.

I dont really understand,

basically i have it like this:

Cable line > 2 way split (1 goes into tv in living room, the other goes into bedroom where the connection continues) > 2 way split (1 goes into the cable modem and the other one goes into the Motorola Booster) From the motorola booster OUT theres a coax cable going into the tv into the bedroom tv.

Forget about the connection to the other, so the way i have is not correct?

Should it be like this:

cable in > Motorola booster > 2 way spliter (one into living room tv, the other into bedroom where connection continues) > 2 way spliter (one goes into cable modem and the other goes into the TV )

Would that be a correct setup?

and just to be clear, am i loosing picture quality because i dont have the motorola booster in the Entry part of the cable in?

You still have two splitters between the cable coming out of the wall and the cable modem with either of those setups. I'd do it the way JCraven does it, but that's just me and how I have a setup (although I don't have an amp.)

As for your picture quality, it's most likely a bad signal that you can't really correct in the home. I would think if it had to do with your cable setup, you'd see a bad picture all the time.

I dont have a bad picture, i like it its just that is it possible that i have a decrease in PQ because i have the setup the way i have it? and will having the booster in the entry point improve anything?

I dont see any other way i could have it hooked up without having 2 splitters in between the cable from the wall and the cable modem because from that bedroom where the cable modem is located is where i run the cable that goes in the OTHER bedroom into the bedroom tv..

I have great download speed btw so i dont think i have any decrese in internet performance really..

i didnt understand what jcrave said really, what does he mean by "amp>amp 2 two way split> 2 tv's."

He meant put the amp between a split that goes to each TV (with the modem located before the amp).

But if you can't split it that way, then keep it how it is now. I imagine you do have a decrease in (optimal) internet speed, but it's not enough for you to care about. ;)

I honestly think that the picture quality has more to do with what your cable company is sending (and which you have no control over), but it's hard to tell. You may just have to try trial and error to see if there's a better combination. If you don't notice a difference, then it's probably beyond your control.

my internet speeds are really good lol, no problems on that department really :)

But yea i must have 2 splits there so i guess ill just leave it as it is, the only other thing i can think of is moving the booster in the entry point of the cable in..
