View Full Version : 360 is loud
My 360 came in from Dell today. Manufacture date of 5-28-08. This is most likely a Falcon. Anyways, turned it on and my god is it loud. I thought the Falcon chipsets were suppose to be quiet? Is my new 360 broken or is this normal?
What game were you playing?
I have found that my 360's loudness is based on what game is in the tray. Gears of War is by far the worst, it seems to be spinning almost the entire time.
With some games, my 360 is as quiet as can be.
Even when it gets loud it does not bother me. I play my games at a high enough volume that I don't even hear the 360.
Yeah surround should make you quickly forget about your 360 volume, aside from quite loading screens.
No 360 built yet is "quiet". They all have two 80mm fans and a high RPM DVD drive. You will need to wait until Nov 19th and use the install feature to eliminate the DVD noise.

it's normal. whether or not it's a Falcon has nothing to do with how loud it is, the dvd drive it has in it determines that. and there's not that much of a difference between the different dvd drives, so it's not like the quietest one is quiet, it just doesn't sound as much like a jet engine as the other ones...

the Benq has been know to be the quietest...
Daekwan 10-18-08, 01:42 PM Wow Leehom brought a 360??
Either hell has truly frozen over, or damn things really must have turned around for the 360's reputation!! I wonder who's next.. Briankmonkey??
Regardless welcome to the brotherhood.. bro. Yeah unfortunately the jet engine 12x dvd drive is part of the initiation process. If you can pass that part, you're in for life. The falcon unit itself is pretty quiet, but when the dvd drive is spinning at full speed it sounds like a lawnmower.
Good news tho my friend. With the NXE (new Xbox experience) coming in November. You will be allowed to install dvd games to the harddrive. Hopefully you brought a 360 with a harddrive. Super-hopefully you brought the 120gig Elite model if you plan to buy and install many games.
rocketknight73 10-18-08, 02:18 PM Honestly it never really bothered me. Until I wanted to watch movies with HD DVD add on that is. Which lead me to buy a HD A2. But aside from movie watching, it never once bothered me playing any game.:)
I agree with most here, that when playing in surround sound, even at low levels, I do not hear the drive spinning. Depending on the room accoustics and the situation that you play the game (I know some people play in their bedroom, at night, and with wife sleeping next to you, with TV volume off, and in that situation it gets very annoying). But as mentioned above, once the new dashboard is implimented, saving the game to hardrive, will cut down a lot of the noise, but the CPU fan noise will still be there and I think that will be the advantage of the Falcon (and furture Jasper).
Anthony1 10-18-08, 04:18 PM The loudness of the 360 is annoying any way you slice it. Unfortunately, that's just the way it is. The best way to totally avoid the noise, is to put the 360 in an adjacent room, and run longer video and audio cables from it, to the room in which you're actually using it.
I have a very large theater room, and the 360 is in the very back of the room, and my surround sound is turned up very high. The only time I notice the 360 is during quiet scenes in games. However, the fact that it's actually louder than my projector, and the projector is above my head and the 360 is way in the back of the room is saying something, lol.
I thought about putting the 360 in an adjacent room to my theater and running long component and optical cables, but I've just never got around to it.
Degenerazn 10-18-08, 05:14 PM Does SDF in your sig stand for Sony defense force?
Daekwan 10-18-08, 07:01 PM Yep.. lol
TomGreen321 10-18-08, 07:23 PM The best thing you can do is tape off the vents. If you don't mind voiding your warranty(and your brain) you can open up the system and cut the fan cord.
Don't buy into the propaganda, the red Rings are caused by global warming, not a heat issue, which is why they think the system has such a loud fan to try and keep the system cool.

LOL.
Btw, just checked the optical drive, it's a Ben Q. I'm one of those people who play games at night when my girl is asleep. She's a really sensitive sleeper, so I guess I'll have to stick with my other alternatives.
The option to install the games on the hard drive is great. I'm not sure how receptive everyone is, but I'm glad they're offering this. It'll put my 120 gig HDD to use. I could probably install 15 games? That's more than enough for me. There are usually only a few games I want from each system each year.
Daekwan, doesn't matter what system is being bashed, be it wii/ps3/360. If there's false information being spread, I'll try to reply with the right information. It's terrible to have people make a decision based on false information.
I wanted to wait for the Jasper, but I couldn't pass on the Dell deal. $70 off the Elite holiday bundle w/two free games. I'm selling the free games tomorrow for $50, knocking the price I paid for the Elite to $300 w/tax/shipped.
Looking forward to Gears of War 2, that's the system seller for me. :D
I put mine in the room behind the HT and problem solved. The 360 is WAY too loud for a dedicated HT room IMO, but fortunately that is easily solved if you can put it in another room.
dmaul1114 10-19-08, 12:16 PM Yeah, it's loud. You just learn to tune it out after a while.
