View Full Version : Just need clarification on something in PGR4
HeadRusch 10-18-08, 04:52 PM Just curious since this has been bugging me......playing alot of PGR4 lately, and noticing its "I dont think they got all the bugs and obviously there's no chance in hell of a patch coming out now", and was curious if other folks had noticed the same with their copies of the game.
For the record I consider this game to be my #1 go-to racer, even better than GT5P....no, its not as realistic, but its a hell of alot more fun thanks to the cars and the tracks and weather available..I know others will disagree but the graphics quality (I'm gaming at 720p at 110") in many cases borders on photo realisim, particularly when the tracks are set to light rain or wet.
ISSUES NOTICED SO FAR:
COCKPIT MODE for several cars is flat-out un-usable. Several cars have the dash so high up or the top of the steering wheel set so high that you literally cannot see the road ahead of you, making in-cockpit driving for these cars all but impossible: Off the top of my head...
- Aston Martin V8 Vantage
- Ford GT 40 vintage racer
- Ferrari 599...or 529...whatever it is.....
- TVR SAGARIS..this was bad in PGR3 too but its worse in this game.
Another major bummer: the McClaren F1 in cockpit mode seems to either have a huge tinted window, or something in the games Lighting mechanics means that the view from inside the cockpit of this car is EXTREMELY DIM, this means the car is all but unusuable in this mode at night, and even during overcast days or with weather its like racing at night. The difference in brightness of the screen going from cockpit to hood or bumper cam is extremely dramatic.
- one of the Ferrarri's...maybe the F40...can't recall right now..has a huge modeling error where the door in the cockpit mode doesn't touch the frame of the car, so you can see a gap between the door and the frame of the car...like the door is floating off the side of your car. Its only a few pixels wide but enough to go "man someone goofed there!".
Can anyone confirm my suspiscions? I was going to write down in a notepad which cars not to bother with anymore due to their un-usuable in-cockpit views (usually due to the dash or steering wheel being set up much too high...the GT40 is the worst, on that car you literally can only see the coming road through the gap between the steering wheel and the dash).
I kept hoping for a Test Drive Unlimited ability to "raise or lower your seat" to correct for that, but no dice.
I know this is a rant, but your first paragraph or two makes me want to buy the game or at least take the demo for a spin on my 90"
I've been playing since before xbox when this game was on dreamcast.
HeadRusch 10-18-08, 06:03 PM Definately take the demo for a spin...and the game is practically free, about $20 bucks every place I see it. The Video reviews they do on GameTrailers are good, but I rarely use the "behind the car view"...the in-cockpit view, with the wheel, on a huge screen is a thing of beauty.
Its not as high rez as GT5P, but the tracks are much, much prettier and more alive....and the sense of speed is significant. Plus, with the more forgiving physics, simply put...you can have more fun with this game. I dunno, I'm a PGR whore now so I'm biased. I find something to like in all racing games...but PGR4 is my go-to game.
Daekwan 10-18-08, 07:06 PM GT5P is boring and dull. Forza is entirely too realistic.
PGR 1-4 is just plain out fun.
Trust me on this.
I agree pgr games are very fun racing game. I use the ms wheel and use the "behind the hood" view and sit about 6 feet away from my 67" tv and that is one wild ride!.
also check out grid and dirt! two more racers that are fun as hell!

PGR2 was the peak of the series, 3 and 4 were big letdowns for me. I don't think there's going to be a 5 though because 4 sold so poorly (which it deserved).

Your momma. :)
Ok, we agree to disagree.
Its widely regarded that PGR4 was far closer to PGR2 than it was to PGR3. The tracks were more technical, they weren't all 15 lanes wide, the cars were harder to control than in PGR3 and the force feedback wheel effects were significantly ramped up. It still wasn't as twitchy as PGR2 was, but that to me was a good thing.
It sold rather poorly because it was released in Fall of 07, the great avalanche season of gaming when there were like 10 major titles hitting that xmas. It reviewed well just about everywhere.
Last I heard the Forza 2 team might be prepping another PGR to hit the 360, but without Bizarre Creations...I dunno.....confidence is low considering how badly I thought Forza 2 sucked (mostly because I found the game to be dull, like most people who bought it...hit about level 25 or 30...and just gave up).
Burnout is cool, but its not a "get your wheel and get in the drivers seat" kinda game....its a joypad game all the way, like it always has been.
For a change of pace, I can also recommend FLATOUT: Ultimate Carnage...its like burnout only with an optional cockpit view and really good FF wheel support.
cesslinger 10-19-08, 02:40 AM What is Flatout like with the wheel? I have the game and the wheel, but never tried them out together.
HeadRusch 10-19-08, 09:08 AM Heavy...and suprisingly playable from the cockpit view. I've played it with the wheel and with the sticks and I could go either way, both are enjoyable experiences.
I see what you mean by the Ferrari 599 since its in the demo, I end up driving with hood cam.
I think Microsoft really dropped the ball losing Dice and Bizzare Creations.
Rally sport was such an amazingly fun game.
As for Forza 2 I also quit around level 20-25. It was annoying have to downgrade cars to meet certain classifactions.
Anyways back to PGR, I thihk MSR and then PGR1 are my favorites.
If I wasn't in "rpg" mode I would probaly purchase PGR4.
number1laing 10-19-08, 07:55 PM I played a ton of PGR4, it is a great game, but at the end just got to be too much of a grind. Still, I got Rank #1 in career mode and all golds in arcade.
And yes, cockpit mode is unusable with a lot of cars. It's just how it is, bumper cam is way better. I wish the GT/Forza games would rip off PGR4's career mode, I really do.

It sold so poorly because it came out the week after Halo 3 and had absolutely no advertising/marketing support. It got shafted.
Bizarre is now in Activision's hands, so any future PGR games will probably be made by Turn 10, MS' in-house racing studio. I personally would rather they don't, to me Bizarre took the formula as far as it can go.
NoThru22 10-19-08, 08:11 PM If this game was still $60, I would tell people it was worth a purchase. My brain cannot wrap around anyone being disappointed in it, especially the ones who liked PGR3, because this improved on it in almost every way.
ratpacker 10-19-08, 09:40 PM I own both PGR4 and FM2, and Forza imo owns it hands down. PGR4's career mode downright sucks and the game as a whole just feels too much like PGR3. A paint editor, auction house and the ability to tune just make forza much more interesting to play. BTW, I was the biggest PGR2 junkie alive.
HeadRusch 10-20-08, 03:22 PM I don't really fall into the crowd that says Paint Editors and Auction Houses make a great RACING game. Nor do "generic dashboard gauges" really do it for me anymore.....Forza 2's presentation is stuck squarely in the 1990's....the tracks suck, the visuals are as basic as they come.....meh, why go on.
NoThru22 10-20-08, 05:44 PM They're two games for two different kinds of gamers.
Forza is concerned with technicalities, simulation, and customization.
PGR is concerned with bringing somewhat realistic physics into the arcade racing world and having a points system for flashy moves.
One doesn't "own" the other; you just prefer one or the other. They're both great, polished games in their respective genres. I happen to prefer PGR by a large margin.

I prefer FM2 over PGR4 by a LARGE margin, therefore it "owns". To me. :)
HD-DVDwonder 10-20-08, 10:22 PM I haven't seen the glitches you alluded to HeadRusch.
Fun racing game, I traded it in not too long ago though; the MP lobby took forever to get one race, and I hardly ever encountered an American either - usually Europeans (Brits mostly) and South Americans. Apart from Brits, the language barrier took away some of the fun factor.
I do most of my online racing on FM2; and also GTA4 b/c it's fun and you meet quite a few cool gamers who don't take themselves too seriously.
I never use cockpit view in any game because the inside of the car takes up too much of the screen. When I autocross, I'm never looking at the inside of the car. I don't even see the dashboard. My eyes are always on the next corner. And that's how I like my racing games.
pcweber111 10-21-08, 12:32 AM Well after playing PGR2 for something going on 3 years (and finishing in the top 100 :p) I was really let down by PGR3. PGR4 came close to PGR2s perfection but in the end it just wasn't the same. It didn't help that MS dropped the ball by not going after Bizarre and letting Activision steal them away (thus guranteeing the series all but died for all those involved). It's a really unfortunate way for the franchise to end after so much promise with PGR2. Myself and all my friends that played night after night for hours on end year after year during PGR2s run tried to get back into it with 4 but we've just moved on to different games now. Kinda sad. :(
I fell for the PGR4 demo, and purchased the game the other night. I've been playing Forza2 hardcore for quite a while, and thought it would be a great addition.
I do like Forza a bit more, since it has the tuning capability and a few tracks I love(Road America FTW!!). However, my one gripe with Forza has been and always will be, the lack of realistic sounds! Seriously, it isn't that hard to make the car sounds like it's supposed to! The things sound like 80's arcade sims!
PGR4 gets a bit better here, but no GT5P. The cockpit mode of any racing sim drives me nuts. Give me the hood cam, screw the dashboard.

If my memory serves me right my skyline pretty much sounded the same as my Ferrari which sounded the same as X car.
flood222 10-21-08, 12:23 PM How close is the handing in PGR4 to PGR3? I have been playing Forza and I went back to PGR3. I couldn't believe that I used to play PGR3, the controls are pretty ridiculous. Did they make it more sim like in PGR4?
Don't think so. Check out the demo
HeadRusch 10-21-08, 12:29 PM I like how in this game the engine sounds are at least correct placement..the Ferarri F599 comes out of the front's....the mid engine cars come out of the rear, etc....the cockpit sounds are appropriately muted...and of course the weather in cockpit view is much harder to drive with than hood view.
Oh yeah...the McClaren has a broken weather view too....damn car's wipers dont wipe the rain/snow from the windscreen :) Like...major unfixed bug there. There is definately no love for the McClaren F1 in this game!
Anyhow...then...there is the entire game full of Bikes..which I at first hated, but now love because its like a completely different game. Gotta play with the pad of course, and the first person perspectives can make you chuck your lunch if you wipe out when playing on a really large screen.......but its still like a "bonus" game ontop of this really cool car game.
Its a shame because I think this is probably the best racing game that is going to be out for awhile, kinda like how all the PC racers felt for years after the Indy games started getting worse and worse, or when the combat flight sims dried up....you know "ya know, I dont think its gonna get better than this anytime soon".....which is sad.
I'd love to be jonesing for a PGR5 release sometime soon.
HeadRusch 10-21-08, 12:31 PM How close is the handing in PGR4 to PGR3? I have been playing Forza and I went back to PGR3. I couldn't believe that I used to play PGR3, the controls are pretty ridiculous. Did they make it more sim like in PGR4?
Are you playing with a Pad or with a Wheel. If you are playing with a Wheel, the FF effects are more pronounced in PGR4 over PGR3 where they were "barely there" and didn't really improve the feel of the game very much.
PGR4 is a harder game...the cars are easier to spin and the tracks, in many cases, are much tighter, with less room for crazy full-speed drifting than the last game.
Is it like Forza? No, of course not...but its better than PGR3. I've been playing PGR4, and went back to PGR3 to play some of the other cars (and tracks during the day, like Tokyo during the day is only available in PGR3)...and its got a less refined, simplified driving model...with light wheel FF. Still fun, but not as much fun as PGR4 with its heavier FF and weather effects.
ooPAYNEoo 10-21-08, 12:44 PM Hey, how do you unlock the Nurburgring? I played thru the game, and it's the only track I can't race, even just in free mode.
My gripe with this game is that it's locked. I paid for the game... give me all the tracks . Just something that generally bothers me with certain games. Beautiful game tho... somehow it didn't stick as a must play like FM2 and TDU. Hoping MC will fill the void.
HeadRusch 10-24-08, 03:29 AM :D
Snapped by me whilst losing on a wet manhattan track...... I had no idea you could get the pics you saved on your PC via PGRNations. Swweeett...I'm gonna play a little bit with the joypad and get some nice backgrounds. Its shots like this that make me go "Gran Whocaresmo"....
NoThru22 10-24-08, 09:27 AM I got all golds on the bikes and some platinums using the wheel. I never switched to the controller for anything on this game.
HeadRusch 10-24-08, 09:29 AM Yeah but taking photos with the wheel is impossible.......am I missing something or is it not possible to, while using the wheel, map the D-pad to "look left,right,behind"......
And I like the sticks for the bike...just feels too...weird..with the wheel ;)
