View Full Version : How much money are you going to spend on games this holiday season?
Degenerazn 10-19-08, 05:41 PM For me, this holiday season is gonna cost ALOT.
Here's what I have lined up
Dead Space (already bought and having a blast)
Fallout 3
Fable 2
Gears of War 2 (decided to cancel the Lancer, more money for games!)
Left 4 Dead
Little Big Planet
On the fence
Far Cry 2
Call of Duty 5
$360 and lots of time. 2008 is a good year for gaming.
I've also been putting off Bad Company, Condemned 2, UTIII, Lost Odysessy, and Soul Calibur 4
wuzup101 10-19-08, 05:47 PM I'll probably pick up most of those titles (actually pretty much every one on there except maybe dead space... not sure about Left 4 Dead either). However, I have such a huge backlog of games right now, I don't plan on buying any of them new at release (maybe GoW2 depending on what the multiplayer looks like).
That being said, I'm sure I'll pick up some additional titles too... I've been out of PC gaming for about 5 years (and just built a rig to get back into it)... so there are some "older" titles that I am going to get for the holiday season too!
Even when I buy new games... I always wait a week or two and catch a sale to get a $40-45 copy.
dmaul1114 10-19-08, 06:02 PM Very little. I have Gears 2 preordered from Amazon, used a $25 GC and got in on the $10GC with preorder deal so that ends up being only $25 out of pocket costs.
I'll probably pick up the DS Castlevania, though I may just ask for that for my birthday or x-mas.
Other than that, I doubt I'll buy anything else this fall. I won't have time for it, so I might as well wait and pick it up next year when it's on sale or I can get it off of Goozex. So stuff like Dead Space, Fallout 3, Fable 2, Far Cry 2 etc. can wait.
TomGreen321 10-19-08, 06:16 PM Not a whole lot. I've decided to go back to do some courses and I'll be working. Most weekends I'll be going to see the kids. Only thing for sure right now is Gears 2, and most likely Fable 2 and Farcry 2.
With the lack of time I won't even bother upgrading my TV, and the rest of the games I wanted will have to wait until next year. Having people over, getting wasted and playing Gears should be fun though.
rahimlee54 10-19-08, 06:19 PM Still havent decided to get GOW2, Probably Fable, LBP, and something for christmas and call it a day. So somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 after CC gift cards or whatever sales I can find. As long as CC stays in business and keeps giving the gift cards with purchase. I want those other but not bad enough to pay full price. Maybe fallout cause that could be really good as well.
Rahimlee54
RobertR1 10-19-08, 07:02 PM Gears 2
Fable 2
Left 4 Dead
Dead Space (have)
Banjo
LBP or Mirrors Edge
ultracat 10-19-08, 09:38 PM GOW 2
COD 5
Fallout 3
Dead Space (I've rented it)
Ghostbusters (may be a rental)
Tomb Raider Underworld (may be a rental)
Too much. But at least the money is going towards a good cause.
redshift1 10-20-08, 01:16 AM Gears 2
Resistance 2
Tomb Raider Underworld
+ highest rated if not one of the above
Anthony1 10-20-08, 01:30 AM With the recession and everything, I think I'm going to have a different strategy this year. The Toys R US B2G1F deal came and went, and I wasn't that tempted. I did it last year, and really enjoyed it, but this year, I can't really even justify spending almost $44 on a game. I'm going to play the role of a cheap bastard, and not buy anything for more than $30. This means I'm basically looking at Craigslist for my gaming needs.
Having said all of that, I still want to check out all the new hotness. I'll try to download all the various demos, and I'll also get a 1 month rental pass from Blockbuster in mid November.
To be honest, I still have tons of games left over from last year that I haven't finished 100 percent. I'm still working on:
360
Halo 3 - about half way thru
COD4 - about half way thru
Assassin's Creed - about half way thru
Skate - about 1/4 the way thru
Mass Effect - about 1/5 the way thru
Half Life 2 - about 1/2 the way thru
PS3
Uncharted - about 3/4 the way thru
Ratchet and Clank - about 3/4 the way thru
Resistance 1 - about 3/4 the way thru
Motorstorm 1 - about 1/2 the way thru
Wipeout HD - about 1/4 the way thru
Super Stardust HD - about 1/4 the way thru
It's pretty embarassing that I haven't finished all these games. I've basically got gaming ADD. I start one game, then end up playing another game, then end of playing another game, etc, etc. I keep getting distracted with other games, and then mix in some rentals, etc, etc, and basically I just end up scratching the surface of tons and tons of games and not getting super deep into them.
TomGreen321 10-20-08, 01:58 AM Don't feel too bad, I haven't even finished Half-life 1 yet.
Aristo7905 10-20-08, 08:30 AM It's pretty embarassing that I haven't finished all these games. I've basically got gaming ADD. I start one game, then end up playing another game, then end of playing another game, etc, etc. I keep getting distracted with other games, and then mix in some rentals, etc, etc, and basically I just end up scratching the surface of tons and tons of games and not getting super deep into them.
You and me both. Although i have been getting better.
I have to finish :
Skate (stuck on one part so i stopped playing)
Metal Gear Solid
Mass Effect
Halo 3
Gears of War
Assasins Creed
Lego Indiana (probably wont even play it)
(and soon to be used copies of )
Battlefield BC
Fable (1)
But for this holiday season (becuase of the list above) I am only buying Resistance 2. I cancelled pre order of COD W@W, not impressed by BETA. Cancelled Fallout 3 (didnt like oblivion). Cancelled Fable 2 (i wanted to play Fable 1 to see if i like that style of game). Cancelled Little Big Planet (not impressed at all w/ the Beta)
The next game i plan on buying new is (besides resistance 2) is Killzone 2 (unless it gets really bad reviews). I will wait to buy Fable and maybe fallout used in a few months.
so yada yada yada.. not that much being spent this holiday season.
-J
GOW 2
Mirrors Edge
EndWar
Dead Space
James Bond QoS
MK vs DC
NFS Undercover
Aristo7905 10-20-08, 09:20 AM James Bond QoS
damn, i forgot about that.. i need to wait for more reviews though. same engine as COD4... so that gives me hope, i want to see how the multiplayer is going to be.
-J
sirjonsnow 10-20-08, 09:28 AM I'm not counting Fable 2 or Fallout 3 since I already ordered them and they come out before November. In that case, I might buy one game - Left 4 Dead. Maybe I'll get Tomb Raider as a gift, but other than that there's nothing I'm interested in.
As for games I need to finish: GTA4 (quit at the very end), Conan, Bully, Dead Rising, Gears of War, Rainbow 6: Vegas.
Hannzo24 10-20-08, 09:58 AM Dead Space
Fallout 3
Uncharted (TYVM TRU B1G1 Free)
Little Big Planet
Fable 2
COD5
After I finish all those I'll decide on my other 'fencers'.
Dead Space
Saints Row 2
FIFA 2009
Little Big Planet
Gears of War 2 LE from BB for the RC Tank
Fallout 3 XLE from Amazon ($120 mostly paid with GC for games/movies sold in Amazon)
GH:WT
There may be something else I'm missing ;)
Just Fallout3, Dead Space and Gears of War 2 for me.
The rest of my budget will be spent on Blu-ray movies :)
forcedfedgtp 10-20-08, 11:26 AM Technically I dont deserve to buy anymore games till I complete some of these others!
Still to complete:
The Orange Box (sooner or later)
Marvel Ultimate Alliance (sooner or later)
Forza 2 (sooner or later)
Condemned Criminal Origins
Condemned 2
Rainbow 6 Vegas
Battlefield Bad Company
Mass Effect
I just picked up Lost Odyssey and Skate on clearance for CHEAP so those are on the "to do" list.
I was thinking about picking up:
The Force Unleashed (which I borrowed from a friend to try)
Gears of War 2
Call of Duty 5
Fable 2
Fracture
Dead Space
and I am sure a couple more I am forgetting...
number1laing 10-20-08, 11:28 AM I have seen like 10 or 12 threads like this in the past few weeks. What makes it especially tedious is most people are buying exactly the same games (myself included).
I originally thought I'ld be spending a chunk on games this holiday season but since I'm leaving the country for some 6months, I'll be buying these games used when I come back. I might bring my system(s) with me on days I'm bored but in all honesty I don't think I'll be gaming as much.
Degenerazn 10-20-08, 01:27 PM I have seen like 10 or 12 threads like this in the past few weeks. What makes it especially tedious is most people are buying exactly the same games (myself included).
Thank you for the incredibly insightful contribution.
gmoney80 10-20-08, 01:42 PM dead space(have)
gow 2 (must have now)
prince of persia
PC
far cry 2 (steam this week)
left 4 dead (steam)
formulanerd 10-20-08, 02:17 PM I've also been putting off Bad Company, Condemned 2, UTIII, Lost Odysessy, and Soul Calibur 4
check target, Lost Odyssey is 15 bucks if they're not all gone.
WalksInDarkness 10-20-08, 03:25 PM I still haven't finished: Halo3, BioShock or Mass Effect yet. So I am in no rush to buy a lot more.
My only "definite" plans are to buy COD5, and Shaun White Snowboarding for the Wii (which is more for my kids than me).
I'll still be spending boatloads on DLC for RB though!
Robocop2 10-20-08, 03:37 PM well so far already
SH V (was actually much better than reviwers said imo)
Dead Space( enjoying this alot )
What I'm looking forward to:
Fallout 3
Resistance 2
GOW 2
and maybe GH World Tour
Degenerazn 10-20-08, 04:24 PM check target, Lost Odyssey is 15 bucks if they're not all gone.
What I meant was that I already own these games but haven't really played much at all. I'm still on disc 1 of Lost Odysessy.
dbburns 10-20-08, 04:42 PM Bought Dead Space, Saints Row 2, and Brothers in Arms last week at TRU.
Have Fable 2 paid off at Gamestop.
Then:
LBP
Fallout 3
Gears of War 2
Banjo-Kazooie Nuts and Bolts (pre-ordered to get the first game for free on XBL)
Probably get:
Prince of Persia
Resistance 2 (need to finish the first one)
Call of Duty World at War
And I'm sure there are others I've forgotten.
jagouar 10-20-08, 06:06 PM Gears 2
Fable 2
game fly the rest (lord of the rings, red alert 3, fallout3, banjo, endwar, sf)
I realized if I got too many games I wont end up playing them. Sooo I'm going with,,
Resistance 2
GoW2
Fable 2
Still on the fence on Fallout, but probly will not get it. If you could play it with a buddy it would be a definite buy.
I like farcry 2,but the setting does nothing for me. Looks kinda meh
Finished deadspace and already sold it back on ebay. Its mediocre.
AHDTVDiet 10-20-08, 06:35 PM I have a huge list of maybes but I have narrowed down the must buys a bit.
Fable II
Fallout 3
Gears of War 2
Call of Duty 5
Last Remnant
I will try to pick up Dead Space and Farcry on sale later in the year (so those are pretty much definits... though I would probably get Rise of the Argonaughts first if it comes out in early Jan).
Really going to look hard at Mirrors Edge, Prince of Persia,Tomb Raider and Endwar. Oh and I am definitly going to get one of the snowboarding games (Shaun White or Stoked) depending on which is better, unless they both get crpy reviews.
jmill79 10-20-08, 06:40 PM Well Far Cry 2 is mine tommorrow or Wednesday (whichever day they have it) then Gears 2 LE is preordered as is COD WAW, look forward to hearing how Fallout 3 is, might be a possability as well...
Bought or pre-ordered
LBP (now playing)
Saint Row 2 (360, now playing)
Resistance 2
Motorstorm 2
Fable 2 and Gears 2 are on my short list. I'll wait on post-Xmas deals or gifts on some of the other games. I'm interested in SOCOM, Buzz, L4D, Far Cry 2.
Fragster 10-20-08, 07:50 PM I'm already broke as it is....my list in no order so far within the last 2 weeks:
- 2 X Inifinity P362 Towers (Ebay) =$250 shipped
-Arcade 360 from Dell deal=$167+taxes
- Projector bulb (blew out after 1000 hours !@#$%^) =$400
- Cables/extenders for my new 360 (monoprice) =$20
- FC2=$60
Too effing broke to get another game right now..........I'll be selling my body on the streets to fund GoW2, Fallout2, Fable 2.............
Fallout 3
Endwar
and
Mines of Moria for the PC
HD-DVDwonder 10-20-08, 10:15 PM Not much; I'll have to see how my friends react to Fable 2 and Fallout 3. The IGN review for the former was not very encouraging. Then again, the only WRPG I've played is Mass Effect, which I loved.
Definite buys are:
NBA 2K9
COD: WAW
I'm kind of surprised that there isn't so much as a word on the sequels to Mass Effect and Assassin's Creed - two of my faves this gen, and sequels were promised.
Now playing:
Saints Row 2
After that, I'll get to Bioshock, which I haven't picked up in 8 months since purchase. I want to set aside some special time for that game (I'm only 1hr in); wish I didn't have so many family engagements for Thanksgiving lol.
Anthony1 10-21-08, 01:55 AM I think alot of guys on here planning on buying 10 or 12 games should maybe think about getting a one month rental pass at Blockbuster. You can get 1 game out at a time (or 2 if you want to pay more), and just sample a ton of stuff and then decide what you really can't live without. I couldn't even imagine paying $65 per game and buying 10 or 12 of them. Thats like $650 or $780, which is enough to buy a pretty decent projector, lol.
Some might think spending $29.99 or whatever it is to get a 1 month gaming pass at Blockbuster is a waste of money, cause when the month is over you don't have anything to show for it, but the fact is, you would have the ability to sample a huge amount of games, and when you're all done with it, you'd have a much, much better idea of where to put your hard earned cash. Also, the 1 month deal at Blockbuster actually is like a 47 day pass, because at the very end of the deal you can do a final rental right before you're pass is about to expire, and that rental is like a normal rental once your pass expires. So, it's a normal 5 day rental, but Blockbuster always gives that 12 day grace period or whatever, so it ends up being like 17 days for that final rental if you want to hold it as long as possible. That's my strategy for mid November. I'm going to start one around November 15th, and use it all the way till Xmas. My final rental will be whichever game is blowing me away the most. Then, after Xmas, I'll be looking on Craigslist and Ebay for good used deals on all my favorites. I think that's the cheapest way to go, while still playing all the huge games.
Ultimate Naruto something
Little Big Planet
Resistance 2
GeOW2
Maybe
Fable 2
Rockband 2
I really need to limit the games I purchase. I never finish most of them. I think the last game I completed was COD4. Before that, I don't even remember.
ADD Gamers Association member #2 here.
damn, i forgot about that.. i need to wait for more reviews though. same engine as COD4... so that gives me hope, i want to see how the multiplayer is going to be.

I have liked all the Bond Games. My fav so far is From Russia with Love. I think it will be fun.

I do rent some before I buy or I rent so I can get multiplayer system link action when the nephews come over.
logicalnoise 10-21-08, 12:03 PM only games I'm buyingf or sure are mirrors edge and the new POP. I'll rent fallout 3 first I'm in no hurry for gears 2. Oddly enough I want to play the nlatest penny arcade episode very much.
ddrheretic 10-21-08, 12:21 PM For shizzle
Fable 2
Fallout 3
Gears 2
Then probably 2 or 3 other games that come out and catch my eye.
angle_slam 10-21-08, 05:45 PM I should direct my wife to this thread. She thinks I spend too much on games. Wait til she see what everyone else wants to get.
My desires are relatively small:
GH: World Tour is probably the only new game I'll buy.
I'll probably pick up used copies of Rainbow Six Vegas 2 and Call of Duty 4.
Sometime early next year, I'll get used copies of GoW2 and CoD5.
For my Wii, besides Wario Land, I don't see anything that strikes my fancy. And since that's only a 5 hour game, it's going to be a rental.
As more time passes, I have become more and more patient with new releases and end up picking them up when there is a drop in price latter on, or, getting them only if there is a discount. However these are some 'must haves at launch:
Fable 2 --> Amazon (because of $10 gift card)
Banjoo & Kazooie ---> Amazon ($36.99 + code for 1st arcade game)
CoD:WaW ---> Amazon. Once I get code from Fable 2 game, i will use it to get this game and then get another $10 gift card
GoW2 ---> I am so tempted to get from Amazon because of $10 gift card, BUT I want to go to a midnight launch party and enjoy the game. Similarly I do not want to wait more days to get it, but then again, $10 giftcardplus no taxes, plus free shipping.....I am a cheap bastard....so I might just order it from Amazon anyways. The only thing that could sway me is gettingthe RC control truck from BB
RB2 ---> amazon ($56.99 + 1600 MS points)
Things on radar:
Fallout3 - I will get, but if like Oblivion, I can play whenever, and after a few months I should be able to get cheaper thus I do not need it immediately
Left 4 Dead - initially on my must have list, but I can wait. I will get once below $39.99
Resistance 2 --> I will wait till I can get for $30
Little Big Planet --> I have no idea what this game is about, but if everyone likes it I will get once less than $30
Star Wars Force Unleashed --> I was going to get at launch, but I will wait till $30
GH:WT --> I am overloaded with games like this, I will wait till next year and may not even get becauase RB/RB2 is so good
I like many have too many games that I have not even opened. I tend to like 'collecting' things and when I see a good deal, I cannot help myself. Between the bargain bins at Target, and awsome deals on Ebay, I have picked up so many new games for under $10 (like the Darkness deal), that if they never released any new games I would be good for another few years. Similarly there are so many good games out there currently (like mercenaries, soul caliber, devil may cry, army of 2, end war, james bond, lego batman, lego indy, and perhaps 20 others) that I will pick up when under $15. For example, I just picked up Lost odessey ($15) to go with assissin creed ($17) new.
I hate saying this, but unless multiplayer is the big part of the game, there is no need to buy single player games at launch. Wait for the discount and get it 2 months latter for half the price. The enjoyment in the game will be exactly the same. multiplayer games is diiferent, because you want to play with friends, and most friends play for the 1st few weeks (months) after launch (unless it is like GoW, or Halo which will be played heavily for ever, or till the next version comes out. CoD4 has a good following, but will likely get replaced (to a certain extent) by CoD5 (CoD:WaW) and completely replaced by CoD6 next year.)
keebler87 10-21-08, 06:59 PM Add me to the list of people who won't be spending much this season. I'm in my final quarter of college and am too busy to play now or the next few months, but will be able to play more once I graduate. Holiday season will almost be over by then and deals should be popping up. Plus I have waaaay too many games to finish (Bioshock, Mass Effect, Orange Box, Assassin's Creed, COD4). That being said, I'll be looking for these titles:
RB2
Fallout 3
Saints Row 2
Dead Space
Gears 2
Fable 2 (maybe)
Left 4 Dead (maybe)
GTA IV DLC (if that counts)
formulanerd 10-21-08, 07:04 PM already picked up saints row 2 (worth every penny by the way)
will be picking up fable 2 today
then waiting on fallout.
rentals go to cod5 and gears 2
Aristo7905 10-21-08, 08:26 PM Well once again i spoke to soon. I have added Fable 2 to my list. i just bought it for $48 (w/ tax and shipping)
I also plan on getting the new James Bond. Watching gameplay def makes me want that game (especially since i am no longer getting W@W)
-J
mbeiler 10-21-08, 08:32 PM I only purchase game that I think I will still be playing 6 months from now. So prob just Gears2 Resistance2 LBP and PES2009 for me. Everything else will go on the gamefly q
I'm cutting down...I've put a stop to the "gotta have it launch day" compulsion. I will be getting Guitar Hero World Tour, Gears 2 and maybe Resistance 2.

This guy is the cheapest @$$ed gamer I have ever seen. I am pretty damn manipulative as well with my purchases. I managed to use a buy 2 get one free (2 copies of Civ: Revolutions, and one of Mercs 2 which is going back) for $42.00 with the edge card last Friday. I am impressed with his determination and it doesn't sound like a bad idea. There are 2 gamers in this household and the pass could be benificial.
Would there be a reason to use Gamefly instead?
kraig4422 10-22-08, 02:50 PM Preordered and Paid for -
Fable 2
Far Cry 2
Resistance 2
Gears 2 - LE
LOTR Conquest
Left 4 Dead
LBP
COD:WaW
Fallout 3
But I probably won't get anything else until next summer. Maybe Resident Evil 5??

Where?
Patchen 10-22-08, 03:26 PM GoW2

I might also get GHWT since I have the instruments from RB/GH3. We'll see though, I still can burn hours playing GH3, RB and RB2.
And I might get Fallout 3.
But really there's only a couple that are definites right now.
Slordak 10-22-08, 04:08 PM Preordered and Paid for -

Jeez, how will anyone buy you any Christmas presents if you end up buying all the games for yourself? Or is it just too hard to wait? As a dedicated gamer, I always try and have a "Wishlist" of games on it that I freeze starting in November so that folks can buy games for me (without fear of me having already bought it for myself).
ChrisFB 10-22-08, 06:32 PM Work is insane and has been for a long time now (financial markets). My son turns 5 next month with a new baby due roughly the same time. My best efforts at gaming come one night every few weeks with a friend and a few beers. We managed to work through Halo3 and are about 18% on GTA4 right now switching off after missions or arrest/death. I'd love to pick up some games but I'm getting to the point where I think I shouldn't even bother looking or reading the forums for a while. Seeing everyone else's game list makes me a bit jealous.
formulanerd 10-23-08, 08:15 PM Where?
he overpaid at CC, theres another 10% off coupon as well. i paid $43
i suggest you check out slickdeals, or even cheap ass gamer.
maximuslcd 10-24-08, 09:17 AM I'd say between my son and I prolly around $300, I'm dont buy alot of games, only the really good ones and one sthat I already know I love..$60 is alot of cash to throw down on a game that your not sure about
Only game I will be buying this year is Gears 2. I was going for Fable 2 but may just leave that till sometime next year. Nothing else on the release calendar appeals to me. With only 2 weeks before Gears' launch I really wont have time to start and finish any new games so I will be trying to finish Too Human and then play some Gears coop to get ready for Gears 2.
CHAVAN30 10-24-08, 09:59 AM Socom
FarCry2
Resistance 2
Gears 2
COD: WaW
then KILLZONE2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! in February
