Hey I'm new here and was wondering if I could get some help/suggestions.

I went garage sale hunting yesterday and stumbled upon a Zenith Crt Projector(Zenith Projection Monitor)

I knew Zenith was a good name and the guy only wanted 10$. Plus it just looked so cool with those huge lenses.

Took it home looked it up. Couldn't find squat. But after reading a few things I found out Zenith only started making these in 1985. Maybe I have the First model?(This also discouraged me, the first model never works right)

I decided to plug it in. No light show. And after taking this device apart and cleaning all the dust out. I have noticed a couple things. That may help to determine a problem (If your skilled at these repairs)

I suspected no HV. at first (and it still could be) But upon start up you can hear the crinkly static noise Most Tv's make at start up. This sound comes from the large transformer with 4 HV leads. One going to the source. The other three lead to the three CRT's

And the only other noise that was being produced came from the power supply. I used a hose to track down this sound. It comes from a transformer in the power supply circuit, it tends to start a few seconds after power on. Almost like a ticking/buzzing(I suspected some safety device reseting itself) This is either a problem in the power supply. Or the power supply is trippin due to something else. What are your thoughts on this?
I have never dealt with color Crts. Only black and white, and these sets had tubes in them. So this is new to me but It's all about the learning.

Also when the power is shut off. I have seen the red crt flash clearly. And people watching claim to see blue and green. This makes me think the HV is good but, Maybe I'm wrong.

All caps in this Tv look physically OK. In the power supply there is one large 680 uf cap. That looks OK but has brown burn looking marks on it. But this whole projector has these strange random burns within it.( I think it was from radiation honestly.) I have a large 680 uf cap I could replace it with. Do you think a 28 year old 680 uf cap would dry up?(rated 200 volts)

Finding a schematic is also almost impossible for me. Any one know where to look?

Any thoughts or tips would be greatley appreciated.
Thanks for reading.

P.S. Sorry for the long post. Just wanted to throw it all out there at once.

Is there a model number on it?

My bad

The model/service number is ... PV800P
another number isnide the chassis says PV800PD but I think the first one is more correct.

Thanks for the thread.

And I know this thing is old and not the greatest but it's what I got. SO I'm gonna tinker with it.

I think my High Voltage for horizontal sweep is out. Using a light bulb helped me to figure this out.
When turning it on the light bulb would momentarily glow. Then nothing..untill you shut it off, it flickers again. And the CRT's show there only sign of life at this point.

I also noticed arcing from the HV wires to ground but only at that first initial moment. Any one have any thoughts on this. Similar problems.

And do those Hv wires slowly lose there ability to function properly?

Well after a cap replacement and hooking up a dvd player.(Not my nintendo) The unit powered on. But only the red and blue CRTs. I am hoping this is not a shot tube but it most likely is.
Is there any hope for the tube in there. And if not do they even have similar tubes I could replace with?

Thanks

Heyzeus..:)

I sold 100s of these sets back in the day, I was everyone's favorite tech in every strip club in town. The Sony and Kloss dealers were trying to get $6-10K for their projectors, I was doing installs for $3500 all inclusive...:)

THe 800 came first, the 810 and 820 were identical to the 800 in a different cases style. THe 830 was a lemon, Zenith redesigned the tubes and they had a very short life. That was corrected in the 840, and the 851 is still out there in lots of bars.

THe 800/810/820 had a gel seal that coupled the light output of the tubes to the lenses. Problem is, when you took a tube out, you destroyed the gelpack, and guess what, Zenith discontinued those in about 1992 or so..:( I have one or two new tubes for the 800 still I think, but without the silicone gelpack, they are useless. You can have them if you want. I threw out all parts for the 800 years ago, but once in a blue moon you'll find one on eBay in working shape. At 23 years old now, I'd ditch the unit, but play with it for fun, and find something higher end, which will give a better image.

If the $10 hooked you on CRT, then it was a good investment.

Hahahahahahahhahahaha! <evil laugh>
