View Full Version : Suffered first lost of Madden 09 on Live
Hey guys on Saturday I lost for the 1st time on Madden 09 on Live. I didn't get spanked but I lost in double overtime by a field goal. What I am mad about is the way the transition is from the 1st overtime to the 2nd. I was playing to stop the other guy from getting in field goal range. There was about a minute left in the 1st overtime and he was playing really conservative. He didn't get into field goal range or even attempt to get close. So the time expired and a new quarter started. I thought that when you go into another overtime, there is another coin toss? I know in regular season it's a tie after 1 overtime. Is this the official way overtime works even during a playoff game?
eddy_winds 10-20-08, 03:24 PM I thought that when you go into another overtime, there is another coin toss? No, you just switch endzones..
Is this true even in real NFL?
I believe it would be considered a tie game if the score was even at the end of the overtime period.
mproper 10-20-08, 03:38 PM From the rules:
The sudden death system of determining the winner shall prevail when score is tied at the end of the regulation playing time of all NFL games. The team scoring first during overtime play shall be the winner and the game automatically ends upon any score (by safety, field goal, or touchdown) or when a score is awarded by Referee for a palpably unfair act.
At the end of regulation time the Referee will immediately toss coin at center of field in accordance with rules pertaining to the usual pregame toss. The captain of the visiting team will call the toss prior to the coin being flipped.
Following a three-minute intermission after the end of the regulation game, play will be continued in 15-minute periods or until there is a score*. There is a two-minute intermission between subsequent periods. The teams change goals at the start of each period. Each team has three time outs per half and all general timing provisions apply as during a regular game. Disqualified players are not allowed to return.
*Exception: In preseason and regular season games there shall be a maximum of 15 minutes of sudden death with two time outs instead of three. General provisions that apply for the fourth quarter will prevail. Try not attempted if touchdown scored. If there is no score in the 15 minutes, the game shall end in a tie.
So for playoffs, the coin is tossed once before the first OT, then the teams switch endzones for each subsequent OT period until someone scores.
I see. Well I'll be ready next time. Thanks for showing me the rules. I guess it's rare that a double overtime occurs.
DerekinMerrick 10-20-08, 10:57 PM Yeah there is only 1 quarter in real football. Are you on planet earth? Thats why this game sucks. Theres more than 1 quarter in ot. How stupid
Villanman 10-20-08, 11:22 PM Yeah there is only 1 quarter in real football. Are you on planet earth? Thats why this game sucks. Theres more than 1 quarter in ot. How stupid
Huh? The game sucks because it follows the playoff OT rules for online play?
I don't think the game sucks either. I just didn't know the OT playoff rules. Madden is an excellent game that's why it's survived the test of time so far. Can you name any other football game that is currently in the market?

Although I always liked Madden more than NFL 2k, it is obvious that the NFL 2k series is no longer in existence because EA secured the exclusive NFL license, not because it was of poor quality.
I didn't know that. That's some BS. Why not allow competition?
bigdee3 10-21-08, 02:51 AM Hey popimp, what's your online record?

i'm just curious, if you owned a company, which scenario do you think would be more profitable?
1. some people purchased your product and some people purchased a similar product made by someone else...
2. everyone had to purchase your product because no one else was legally allowed to make a similar product...
that's what i thought...
i personally liked the Sega 2K football series better than Madden, and in my opinion ESPN NFL 2K5 is still the best football game ever made, but that was then and this is now. sure, not being allowed to make a choice sucks, but it is what it is...

Are you drunk? Cause I have no idea what you are talking about. There's only one quarter in OT during pre-season and the regular season.
Once the playoffs start, there's as many OTs as it takes for someone to win. Because obviously playoffs and the Superbowl would be useless if the games could end in a tie.
So Madden follows the rules, which is not surprising at all.

NFL 2k6 was sold for 20 bucks. Madden 2006 was 50. EA ended up dropping the price to 30 because it had some trouble competing with a comparable (and, in some reviews, better) game for 30 bucks less. They purchased the NFL license to make sure that this would not happen in the coming years. I think that they shouldn't have been able to do that, but the fact remains that the NFL is a business and there is nothing in business law to stop the two companies from entering such an agreement. It's not like EA wanted to buy exclusive rights to making any game featuring the sport of football (which is public property), they just bought exclusive rights for their game to feature NFL teams, players, stadiums and statistics.
Anyway, I'm guessing Madden didn't want any ties in online play. Not a big deal, you'll be ready next time and in every Madden after this one.

You think every game sucks.
Hey popimp, what's your online record?
PM sent
baytoLA 10-21-08, 11:30 PM Why should they follow the playoff rules? Its not a tournament or playoffs, its just a regular game. It makes sense to be a tie after 1 OT.

Now THIS I agree with.... if you're not in a playoff of any kind, then it should be a tie.
eddy_winds 10-22-08, 12:06 PM just a regular game.
jrogacki 10-22-08, 02:08 PM You think every game sucks.
yes he does. he even thinks the "this game sucks" game by sucksoft sucks.

2k was putting out better football games from the get-go. better controls, better graphics, hella better presentation. halftime shows with highlights people? madden was still outselling them based on their long history in the business while sega was just starting to make some noise and turn heads in their direction. then the bombshell happened. sega sold its 2k5 game for $19.99 in attempt to get madden fans to atleast try their game. and 2k5 was the greatest football game ever made if you ask me. ea looked at this as a severe threat and secured the nfl license. video games are supposed to be about fun. fun left nfl football games 5 years ago. madden is a rehashed dissapointment every year. they still wont attempt to do things that were done 5 years ago and were considered innovative. their lazy as hell and know people will buy their crap because everyone wants atleast one football game a year and no one else is making nfl games. its basically a cash cow scheme. i switched to ncaa series, and as much as i love college football, their games are getting stale. most notably 09. i got bored with it after two weeks. hopefully sega will make a return into the nfl games schematic and i will be one happy camper.
