Hi All,

I've been searching around on the internet for good quality cables to use in an AV installation. I want to run VGA from a PC, composite from a VHS player and component from a DVD player video up to a Hitachi X605 projector. I also want to run serial cable for control via a procon controller and speaker cable up to some speakers

From what I can tell for the VGA I need 5 core shielded cable but there seems to be hundreds of different ones all from different manufacturers.

Can anyone give me heads up on what I should be looking for in a cable to do each of the jobs above. I can't imagine that the run would be more than 25m.

Any help would be appreciated(or even just a point in the right direction.

Many Thanks in advance

For serial, run cat5 and use RJ45 to DB9 connectors.

For VGA, any decent cable from PCCables, Monoprice, Bluejeans will be fine.

For composite/component, if you have the tools (a crimper), run coax. You'd want coax with solid copper center, 100% foil shield, 95% tinned copper braid.

Many thanks for mentioning bluejeans, their site is exactly what I've been looking for, a complete breakdown (including beldon numbers) of the cables.

Bluejeans is great for cable, you can't go wrong there. I do everything through them, save for HDMI, which I buy from Monoprice.

I would only add that you should *definitely* think about adding at least one run of HDMI to the mix. You might not need it today, but you will down the road...it's the only pathway to get 1080p out of Blu-ray (AACS limits component to 720p or 1080i). Or, if you can swing it construction-wise, run a conduit from your equipment location to the projector...then you're always future-proofed!
