I had Directv installed last week, and there are 3 lines running from the dish into the house. I was told that I had to send the signal to different designated receivers ( unlike cable that split the signal).

Is this correct?? I can't see why this would be and if true, it is silly to limit the viewing to a maximum of 3 locations.

Any help??

The Directv receiver sends voltage to the dish to switch between the different satellite transponder frequencies. Thus each receiver needs to have it's own cable connection to the dish. But you can use a satellite multiswitch to expand to more than 3 receivers.

I have an HD Directv receiver and it requires two lines for each receiver.

Or a Single Wire Multiswitch (SWM8), which lets you run just one cable at each outlet, even for DVRs. You do have to have 4 cables from the dish, though. With a regular multiswitch, you need 4 cables from the dish.

SWM8 (http://www.swm8.com) Recently developed and deployment started within the past 6-8 months. There's also now a SWM LNB that's going to be standard installation beginning later this month. If you want, I can see if I can find a more detailed description of how it works. I've read it -- it's just a matter of finding it again.

Unlike stacking, where all transponders of 1 satellite are put onto 1 cable, the compatible receiver or DVR requests a channel and the SWM sends a channel that contains the requested channel to that receiver. A DVR requests 2 channels and the SWM sends a channel that includes those 2 channels to that DVR. There can be up tp 8 tuners on 1 SWM8 module.

had my SWM for the last few months (bought it because couldnt stand waiting for the testing in other areas to be over) and have LOVED it since. No way to do additional drops.

Occasionally has to be reset if loss of power or flakey update but otherwise works as it should

have 3 HD DVRs and 2 HD boxes
