View Full Version : And Now for Something Completely Different: Why your screen name?
Just a little aside. This is just to take a break from all the normal goings on here. Please explain the source or meaning of your screen name. Mine is a contraction of Randy (my name) and Sacramento (where I live, sort of). Not real creative, but it is a play on ransack, "To search or examine thoroughly. I see sivadselim is Miles Davis spelled backward. Some of you simply use your name or initials. But some of you have interesting, unusual, or weird screen names. Please explain.
sourbeef 10-24-08, 11:07 PM Mine is my favorite meal, with dumplings of course :D

Completely made up. I just liked the sound of it.
It could be a misspelling of: Aurelian - an archaic word for lepidopterist, one who is interested in butterflies.
Mine is my favorite meal, with dumplings of course :D
SOUR BEEF AND DUMPLINGS
2 c. wine or cider vinegar
2 c. water
1 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. black pepper
1 med. onion, chopped or 3 tbsp. chopped instant onion
2 tbsp. pickling spice, tied in bag
5 lb. chuck roast
2 tsp. celery flakes
1/2 c. sugar
18 dark old-fashioned gingersnaps
Combine vinegar, water, salt, pepper, onions, celery flakes and pickling spice (put spices in small bag) to make marinade. Place meat in this mixture, making sure it is covered with liquid. Cover. Let stand 2 hours or overnight.
Add sugar. Place over heat and simmer 3 hours or until tender. Remove meat to platter. Keep hot. Strain liquid to remove spices. Return liquid to cooking pan. Stir in gingersnap crumbs to thicken gravy and simmer 20 minutes. Serve with potato dumplings.
POTATO DUMPLINGS:
2 c. (3 med.) riced or mashed potatoes
1 egg, beaten
3/4 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. white pepper
Flour
Herb croutons or cut-up bread in sm. pieces
3 onions, sauteed in butter
Cook potatoes, drain and rice or mash potatoes. Add egg, salt, pepper, mixing well. Put aside. Saute onions. Add croutons or bread pieces. Mix potatoes and add flour, just enough to hold shape. Form small ball and poke a hole in each dumpling and put small amount of onion and bread in center, then close. Drop in hot water. Dumplings are done when they come to top. Should serve 6.

lalakersfan34 10-25-08, 12:04 AM Mine's self-explanatory. I've been using it since 2000 when I was in Jr High and I guess I've been too lazy to think of something else. The 34 was Shaq's number when he was on the Lakers. Wow that was a while ago...I really do need a new name...
BTW, great thread Randy. Sticky for sure :D

BTW, great thread Randy. Sticky for sure :DSince we are all so detached by the Internet, I figured this might give a little insight into the people we communicate with. Or not. A least I've learned what a lepidopterist is and how to make sour beef and dumplings.:)
Iron_Marshal 10-25-08, 12:25 AM I used to study military history when I was younger, and in particular the Napoleonic wars. One of the Napoleon's Marshal's which particularly intrigued me was a man by the name of Nicholas Louis Davout, whom Napoleon referred to as his Iron Marshal. I always liked the moniker.

(Oh, and as far as subs she currently has two Image Dynamics IDQ-12's in front of the front seats, using the main frame rails for much of their cabinet volume. Other speakers are KEF KAR System 160Q coincident drivers in the front doors and Audax HM130Z0's delayed using a Roland delay box for rear fill. Denon DCT-950R head, AudioControl 24XS crossover, PPI A404.2 amp. When I get serious about upgrading her stereo, I'll definitely rip out the crude IDQ-12's and probably replace them with Peerless XLS12's, probably going to an augmented wideband system with 3" widebanders for LCR and then just the subs._

Mine's probably fairly obvious, because the Goddess is probably the most interesting car ever conceived. See Barthes. (http://www.citroenet.org.uk/passenger-cars/michelin/ds/ds-76.html)Isn't that a Citroen? In 1965, my Dad and older brother spent a year rebuilding a '55 Chevy Bel Air. My brother didn't have his license yet, so he wasn't allowed to drive it. My parents were at the store when he decided he would take it for a spin around the block. It was a rainy day. He saw my parents car down the block and raced to beat them home. He took a wet corner too fast, skidded to the wrong side of the street and crashed head on with a parked Citroen. Totaled his Chevy the first time he drove it. The Citroen didn't fair too well either. Ever since then, I have reviled Citroens. I know, not the car's fault.

joe_sun 10-25-08, 10:15 PM In the late 80's there was and still is a store in Downtown Sacramento called Joe Sun.
It had this huge light up sign with a silhouette of two people having huge afros, butterfly collars and HUGE bell bottoms.
Nothing was more uncouth than 70's bell bottoms in the 80's and being the rebel I am I fell in love with it.
They have since torn the sign down but years and years ago when I was trying to pick a screen name that picture of Joe Sun's funky 70's sign came to me and I started using it.
I've not seen that store, but I avoid downtown as much as possible. Is it on the mall?
I do remember wearing bell bottoms and paisley shirts in the 70s. Oh, wait, that was yesterday.:)

Had he been driving the Cit, he probably wouldn't have skidded.
And I'd imagine the DS (or 2CV, or H-Van, or whatever) fared far better than the crude yank tank, because it was actually engineered instead of just being a "stylish" body atop a crude ladder frame. Goddesses had crumple zones before Mercedes and Volvo. Actually, the infamous Merc 600 Pullman used a hydropneumatic suspension Citroen sold them, because the Swabians realized they simply could not engineer a better suspension.

4DHD is a combo of having a c-band 4DTV service and HDTV. It was the only thing I could think of at the time.
Now I only use the 4DTV for the music choice channels and occassionally search for any wild feeds. C-band, which once had everthing, has been left behind since direct tv. I still can get some of the HD channels on c-band, but then I'd just be doubling up on the cost.

Much as I love St. Joe as if he were my own grandfather, I'm really loving what I've seen thus far from Coach Zorn. And after what we've endured from that insidious Cowpokes spy Norv Turner seemingly endless run of ineptitude, through the inexplicable firing of Marty Schottenheimer for Steve Inferior, it's nice to see some serious and inspired new leadership in the spiritual and intellectual home of the NFL.

Nothing special to my name....my initials and last name.
Life-long Washington Redskins fan. It has been a long time since there was anything to brag about, but things are looking up.Think you've got it bad, try being a Rams fan.

fanbrain 10-28-08, 06:05 PM I'll bite.
Mine is a loose adaptation from a Space Ghost: Coast to Coast episode "Chambraigne: shampoo for your hair, and your brain!" I sketched a picture of a cartoon person with the top of their head missing and a propeller coming out of their head, like a beanie cap (it sounds morbid, but it's actually quite funny looking). Hence, fanbrain.
Quote from the Space Ghost episode:
"Other shampoos just work on your hair. But Chambraigne travels down each follicle and bores into your skull, depositing magical knowledge crystals."

raylock 10-28-08, 06:14 PM Needed a name I could remember since I'm not as young as I used to be:eek:
Ray is my first name and lock is the first few letters of my last name. Seems to work, I usually remember it.

Full Transcript (http://snard.com/sg/guide/?ep=69&)Unfortunatlly, I remember the original airings of the Space Ghost cartoon in 1966. Gary Owens, from Laugh In, did his voice and Tim Matheson, Otter in Animal House, did the voice of Jace as well as Jonny Quest. God I'm old.

You're not really old unless you remember Winky Dink, Crusader Rabbit, Ruff and Ready and Gumby!
Nah. You're not really old unless you remember Winky Dink, Crusader Rabbit, Ruff and Ready and Gumby!
Don't know Winky Dink or Ruff and Ready, but I was around before Gumby and I remember CR. But I wasn't around for the first CR (1950). I also watched Howdy Doody (though that now sounds like it should be a potty training video), Romper Room, Clutch Cargo, Captain Kangaroo, Mickey Mouse Club (w/Annette), Soupy Sales (White Fang and Black Tooth, olau, olau), and many more. I even remember watching the premier of the Flintstones in B&W.
