Hi, I bought a Phillips rear projection HDTV off of craigslist, and the tv has a bad glow around anything white that makes the picture quite irritating. The problem surfaces on all inputs that I've used (component and DVI). Is there any way to fix this problem without a costly service bill?

Thanks for any input.

Philips usually bad news- contaminated crt coolant in blue and possibly green tube. BIG job for whom-ever wants it. Verify by pulling screen assembly (tricky if you don't know how) and looking down into the lenses with the Tv on.

It may be dirty optics.Have you checked the mirror and lenses to see if they are dirty? Dust will cause white glows.

An earlier thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showpost.php?p=12589298&postcount=5) this year details a Philips fluid change, with various photos throughout. Have a year-2000 Philips 64PH9905 that still seems okay, without noticeable fluid contamination, but still get nervous reading reports like these. -- John

How do I go about checking the mirrors and lenses? Do I take off the back panel?

Im not familiar with your set, but usually you remove the frame that houses the screen, and your mirror and lenses are right there.I have a newer set now but a few years ago I bought a used set and had the same problem. Opened it up and the optics were filthy. I removed the lenses and cleaned all surfaces including the mirror. The tv was crystal clear, like new, when I was done.Optics should be cleaned at least once a year if not every six months, to keep you tv looking its best.

I attempted this today, but the TV has very odd screws (star shaped). Would any of you be familiar with what screwdriver I would need?

With my year-2000 64" Philips (64PH9905), you remove the entire rear cover to access the one mirror and three CRTs/lenses. A smaller removable rear panel provides some access but isn't large enough for optics cleaning. Scanning or searching the current 'don't dump your CRT RPTV' thread provides posts on how to clean the optics, and the original poster of the thread has tips at his home page about optics cleaning. -- John

A white glow seems like sure fluid contamination with aging Phililps CRT RPTVs. Searching this forum for 'Philips' threads reveals a current 'help fix a Philips?' thread where the OP fixed his with help from a friend and someone else just posted with another good coolant change. For sure, it's a major undertaking

Hope to be joining them this week; I'm about 1/2 through changing blue/green CRT coolants. Posted some Philips-related coolant-change comments in that thread as well as in Mr. Bob's don't-dump-your-CRT-RPTV thread, along with many others. -- John
