I am assuming that running an automated setup like MCAAC (on a Pioneer SC-05) calibrates my sub to be correctly phased... and after that, I should not need to use the phase select switch on the sub itself. Or is my assumption incorrect?

Most subs have the phase set at "0". Go to http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=824554 and most of your questions will be answered.

I think you are referring to a full band phase over the entire frequency spectrum. I think that is what MCACC is doing/
