I just sold my sammy lcd and am looking to get an xbr960 or xs955 off ebay this week. I couldn't believe how much better my little dynex tv looks compared to the lcd.

I am truly disappointed, now that I'm learning about hdtv, that CRTs are done being manufactured.

You said it brother. CRT is the way to go, and it is definitely a buyers market. If I were you I would try craigslist rather than ebay, since it's all local. After that I would try http://www.talksony.com you'll get loads of info there.

Good luck!

LOL... I totally misinterpreted your post... I thought you must have brushed you hand across the cathode and got a bit of a "jolt"!

Have had that happen at least a couple times..... NOT FUN!!

Heh, i only had that happen once but indeed it wasn't fun at all. I was kinda thinking the same when i read the thread title, but the content wasn't all that surprising, though it DID bring me some enjoyment. I've always been a CRT fan and i'm glad that even now with HDTV in people are still looking to buy CRT based screens.

To me it's been the money object as well, but even when i had money i'd spend them on something else, why in the world would i replace my TVs/monitors with something more expensive and inferior at the same time. Besides, HDTV is just starting to emerge here in Romania, and SD channels look like crap on a HD LCD.

And with 21" Trinitron CRT monitors going for $60 here, there is really no reason to not buy one. I'd go get one myself if i had enough space in the back, but i can't because of those damn bookshelves where i keep my books and CD/DVDs. My current room layout would be pretty hard to change, so looks like i'll be keeping this 19" Nokia monitor for a while.

As for the TV side of things, i don't really watch enough TV for it to matter. I have a 21" Nokia TV in my room, i got it for free from my neighbours. It didn't turn on, i fixed it (was the power supply) and i play my Dreamcast on it and watch some comedy shows every now and then. The other two TVs in the house are 24", never really needed more, besides they hardly get used nowadays since mom uses the internet a lot as well. When HDTV will become mainstream here as well i will probably get a bigger TV, that is, if there will be anything worth watching then.

:D Me too, I was thinking "Sir, you really should be calling your local hospital instead of goofing around on the internet".

Yea I was in the same boat for awhile, I own an 34XBR960 CRT and was looking for something bigger.. So I tried a few LCD's , I would sit them next to the XBR960 just for comparison sake and the CRT just killed them all in overall picture quality, Especially black levels and 480i/480P quality.

Long story short I ended up buying a 50" Pioneer Kuro 5080HD Plasma and have been extremely happy with it. Kuro's have the deepest black levels on the market (for a non-CRT) which gives them very deep & rich colors just like a CRT.

Unfortunately the current 50" Kuro models start out at $3,500 - $4,000 and finding last years models probably wont be easy. I got my 5080HD for $2,200.

But you wont be disappointed with an XBR960 CRT it has a stunning picture especially with HD content, but buying one off Ebay might be a little risky.. hopefully you get one with good convergence and geometry, I had to send my first one back (got it brand new from crutchfield.com)

Shot I took from the 34XBR960 playing Crank bluray on PS3:

whats the secret to taking a nice picture of a CRT display?

I figured that I could either save for a kuro for 2010 or 2011 or just buy something quality and keep a few thousand dollars. It seems like pioneer is the only company who is making a set that can compete with the images I'm seeing from CRT. I've got to figure that in two years, a premium price with be more along the lines of $2500-3000 for plasma.

I'm bidding on a xbr960 and an xs955 since they both have hdmi and super fine pitch. I'd preferrably take both tvs and outfit them in my house- one in the basement and one in the bedroom. Together they'd cost me less than $500. The two sellers have great ratings, pics look good, but it's always risky. It's mostly about getting that black level, detail, and color accuracy with HD.

Driving a few hundred miles to pick them up is another story...

no I mean in terms of shutter speeds and iso settings. I've tried it before and I usually get some wavy lines and things. Pictures don't come out anywhere near as nice as that one posted above.
