View Full Version : What happens when lamp starts to go bad?
wilesone 10-27-08, 11:52 PM I would like to get a replacement lamp for my kds55a3000 while it is still under warranty but I am not having any problems. So I am wondering what I could tell the warranty person to get them to send me a new lamp without sending a tech by. I am not a thief in any way and I dont feel great about lying about my lamp going out but I dont exactly feel bad either. I think sony can afford to give me a lamp for free that they would normally charge an outrageous price for. I hope nobody will look down on me for doing this because I am a good and honest person but dont feel like I should have to spend 150-250 bucks for a lamp after 15 mos just because it didnt blow before 12 mos was up. What usually happens before a lamp blows? Flickering, general dimming?

It really is noticable when you put in a new bulb.
Here is a suggestion.
Man up. Buy a new bulb and keep the old one as a spare.
wilesone, this "honest person" stuff doesn't sit well when your being underhanded.

A lie is a lie is a lie. Bad karma, etc. Just order a lamp as a spare. Your wallet may be a bit lighter, but you'll retain and maintain your integrity. After all, the only way you can honestly expect others to be fair and honest with you is for you to do the same. Sometimes they will, sometimes they won't, but if they aren't, it's their moral struggle or failing, not yours.
(Note: The above does not apply in times of warfare or when you or your family are in mortal danger. At those times, do or say what you can to protect yourself/selves. If you have to steal or lie, make sure it's for something really, really big and vital and important.)
wilesone 10-28-08, 08:58 PM Damnit, you guys are making me feel like some kind of monster. JK
Since I truly do believe in and live my life by the golden rule I will pony up the funds and buy a bulb. Actually I think I will just wait awhile since I think I've only got about 3000hrs on my tv. Do you know of any good places to buy for less than retail? Do I need it to be a sony lamp or are there others? TIA and sorry I came off like a dirtbag. I did not understand the being underhanded comment. What did that mean?
antwon412 10-28-08, 09:19 PM starts staying out late at night
is rude and beligerant when you try to talk to it
you find it's secret stash in the filiment drawer
at that point its bst to cut ties and focus on the younger, clean cut bulb
KALSIDHU 10-29-08, 12:36 AM Having perpertrated fraud many times against "the man" heres what id do: buy a new exact bulb as the one in your t.v., make sure it has to ship to your house, shake it real hard so it breaks, when the tech comes out to see your t.v. put in the broken bulb, he will order you a new one, KEEP THE BROKEN BULB and return it from where you purchchased it and say it was damaged during shipping. Just do all this within the return period.
Good Luck

Yes you should pony up. I was offended when I read, "...sony can afford the lamp" ... please. DLP sets require occasional bulb changes. It's the way of things -- you should accept that when you buy the set. And if you're worried about the bulb going in the first 12 months, buy an extended warranty.
Glad to see you're doing the right thing...

good job on stealing and lying about it!
I have had a bulb replaced by sony under warranty.
First they did not send a tech out, the symptom was the tv kept cycling power.
Second, they fed ex'd a new bulb overnight and included the prepaid shipping document to return the old one or they would bill my credit card for it after 30days.
Why don't you look at buying a warranty extention, you may be able to get that for about the same price as a new bulb and you will have your entire tv covered and free lamps if you have a problem.
Not to mention peace of mind

The failure modes of UHP lamps can be all over the place. The only lamp I've had to replace in my SXRD was not significantly dimmed, but did start flickering badly. I've seen lamps get really dim, and I've seen lamps die before flickering or dimming appreciably.
wilesone 10-29-08, 09:27 PM Thank you for the replies. I think I might look into the extended warranty, if it is transferable because I might sell it to a friend soon. I would not want the bulb to blow for him right away. I really want the sammy 67a750.
Thanks again.
