Anyone have any experience with this item? As an inhabitant of an apartment unit on a limited budget I cannot construct a traditional theater room, but came across this relatively inexpensive variation of a "Now Showing" marquee. I have a couple of quick questions that I hope someone can address...

How is the:
- Quality of the material/build?
- The allocation/balance of the included 96-letter package?
- Available space for titles?

Are you happy with your purchase? Any help/thoughts are appreciated...

I have the older version of this sign. It's a quality product and it's fun displaying the movie title when we have guests.

Get the extra pack as it has all the cool logos.. THX, DTS, Dolby Digital, HDTV...

I love this product for the cost. It sits above my faux ticket booth. Looks impressive from the living room to the entrance to the concession stand / theater.

I will warn you that Indy Jones and the Kingdom of the Crustal Skull barely fit on both lines. :)

But most of the time I have no issues getting two titles on one line, I use the other line (top most line) for the logos and made a quick cheapie theater name on my home printer.

Ken from Stargate Cinema has said a new pack for this sign is in the works with add'l phrases and words.

The only drawback to this sign is that the tracks holding in the letters is glued on. Having said that, two of the four tracks came off in the several years I've had it but they restuck without needing new adhesive. They held fast ever since.

So it seems that those who have purchased this item have found it to be a wise purchase. Interesting that their appears to a new "letters pack" in the works... any info you can relay regarding an ETA? Finally, over the 2 lines combined what is the max # of characters that can displayer (30? 35? 40? less? more?)

Thanks again for your responses, and the pic (always interesting to see how others have incoporated such items into their setups)

I wil say I have had great luck with that company, specifically this marquee came in damaged (UPS test gorillas jumping on packages, got to love those Brownies). I called Ken and he shipped out a replacement that afternoon. I got the extras and am myself curious about the new extras that may be forthcoming. I am now trying to find different way to light it from behind to see how it will look.

I'd be interested in seeing that. I have an outlet behind the sign and have been thinking about options, including running rope lighting around the edge.

No idea but I've asked Ken (the owner) to chime in on this.

Hard to say as an "I" is much narrower than a "W" but I'd say very roughly about 20 per line (x2 lines) would be a good guess.

Based on the sign's construction, I can't imagine it lending itself well to backlighting. But then again, I've never had much of an imagination.

New packs should be completed in a week or so. I'm working on the .pdf file to send out, but I have a lot of things going on at once and have to prioritize as necessary. Then there is some production time with a third party. So it's a function of how busy they are.

I would use the phrase "it's a matter of days" but that's a sore subject/phrase on this forum. :) (sorry, couldn't resist)

I agree with Monoplex that the construction does not lend itself to backlighting but I'd be curious to see what you guys come up with. I've been wrong before.

Please PM me or use the contact page on our site for further info/pricing and indicate you are from this forum. I want to stick to the forum rules about not marketing.

Ken, can you tell us the differences?

I want to order one -- but not if the new pack is going to be more useful.

IIRC, you buy the sign which comes with a standard letter pack. It's just the add-on pack (which you buy separately) that will be changing.

I have had this sign for a couple of years and it's still hanging and being used weekly. I hope the new pack has stuff like the Blu Ray logo. After the first few months, the tracks fell off, I cleaned the double sided tape they use off and hot glued them back on and it's been good ever since. It would be cool to have a sign like this one lighted up even with a personal name.

After the first few months, the tracks fell off

Yes, we changed the method by which the rails are fastened and have, I think, eliminated that problem about 6-8 months ago. Thanks for being industrious and handling that on your own.

Well, based on the recommendations/thoughts of forum-goers here and the super-fast turnaround on responses to any questions I asked the owner of the company that distributes these, I have placed an order, which has already shipped, and am excitedly awaiting its arrival.

Thanks again to all who contributed, and i will, of course, post my own thoughts once I have the sign in my hands and mounted.

I've been told the letter pack upgrade has been delayed while their office moves. It will still be coming, just not as soon as some of us would like.

I'm still doing my virtual online camp out to buy 'em!

Any news on this? I got this sign for my birthday in August(with no add on pack) and have Christmas money to purchase this new pack so I don't know if I should buy now or wait.

Anyone have any comments on the new version of this sign? Any luck with backlighting? Any other alternatives you would recommend instead? Thanks!

I tried another way - here's my solution: Home made lighted marquee (http://www.cinemamurray.com/Cinema_Murray_Online/Lighted_Marquee.html).

Here's the forum construction thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1099604).

I purchased one of these a few months ago (with the add-on pack and the additional letters) and I use it all the time.

My only minor complaint is that the plastic letters do not seem to be cut to a consistant height. Although it isn't noticable to the naked eye, I've found that every so often a letter will not fit within the tracks without bowing out in the middle, which is then obvious. It's a quick fix (remove the letter, trim 1/16"-1/8" off the edge of the plastic, slide letter back in), but considering the price ($25 for 96 extra letters) I would have expected a bit better quality. It's not a deal-breaker for me, but it's definately a nuisance.
