View Full Version : DVI to HDMI issue

I have the following components:
720P Samsung DLP with DVI HDCP
Onkyo TX-SR606 AVR
Sony BDP-S350 Blu Ray
Toshiba HD-A3 HD-DVD
DirecTV HD DVR

All but the TV are HDMI.

Problem: When I switched HDMI sources or switched DTV channels from HD to SD or back, the 606 would often lose audio and video, i.e. the handshake. Often cycling the 606 power would restore the handshake, but not always. Thinking it was the 606 (because the HD-A3 worked fine bypassing the AVR and connected directly to the TV), I requested and received a replacement receiver today...but, it turned out that it wasn't the receiver, kinda. It was the TV, kinda.

OK what does that mean? It means that my TV and my 606 would not reliably connect (HDMI to DVI). As I mentioned above, the TV works fine with Toshiba HD-A3...haven't tested it yet with either my S350 or my DirecTV receiver.

So here's my question...is there an AVR out there comparable in proce and feature set with the Onk 606 that WILL work reliably with my DVI TV?

Or is HDMI-DVI just not a good idea? I really want to get away from component cables (not sure if my S350 upscales SD DVDs to 720P if I'm using component) but can't afford the TV I want right now (73" Mitsi DLP).

This may not be the right forum but there isn't one for component compatibility issues.

Thanks

You may want to go to the 606 owner's thread and ask if there is a problem with HDMI switching.

The S350 will most likely not upconvert SD DVDs over component unless someone has found a way to modify it.

The 606 works fine with an HDMI TV...just not with DVI (HDCP). By the way, I spent a lot of time on that thread...nothing af any use regarding this issue.

I had this problem when I originally acquired my Onkyo 705 receiver. I also have a similar set-up with a Samsung HLN series TV with the DVI input. A clue to solving my problem was that it was related to my dog. On a cool dry day whenever my dog would go near my sytem, my HDCP handshake would occasionally be lost. After seeing this and also getting a shock from static electricity after petting her it finally hit me that it may be an electrical interference issue. I had an old snap-on type ferrite cable filter that I put on the HDMI-DVI cable near the DVI connector to the TV. I have not lost the HDCP handshake since then.

Try getting a better quality shielded HDMI-DVI cable or try the ferrite filter trick.

Very intriguing...Was it every time you changed sources? Can you describe this filter and where it goes a little better? Mine is also an HLN series DLP TV. For now I went to component cables (TV is only 720P so those are good enough) but I want my cabling to be cleaner. My HDMI cables are huge, gotta think that are shielded pretty well.

It happened when switching sources and also randomly while watching a source. I believe the HLN sets are sensitive to electrical interference picked up by the cable shielding. This link will show what they look like. http://store.solar-electric.com/nosufefi.html Place it right aginst the base of the DVI connecter. An alternative is to find a HDMI-DVI cable that already has the filter on the DVI side.

Also, keep in mind that the HLN's will not accept a 480i source to DVI. This can look like an HDCP issue. Another possibility is that the Onkyo power supply is generating interference directly to the TV circuits. Try repositioning the Onkyo temporarily to see if anything improves.

Cool, thanks

Did not know that. So, if I have an HD satellite receiver (HR-20) and switch to a SD channel, does anyone know if it sends that signal at 480i or at the HD settings (in my case 720p)? How would one find out? Man, would THAT be an annoynace...

Not an option...no room and no spare cable length.

Thanks, lots of good info there.

Actually, I know the answer...I can watch SD channels via HDMI. Switching between HD and SD channels was one of the conditions that would drop the handshake, but cycling power on the 606 usualy restored it.

I stopped at Radio shack today to get an RF Choke (What they call a ferrite emi filter) but they were too small for my HDMI cable. Off to Frys...

Amazing...nobody had any big enough for my 3/8" cable, so I tried to order online form the site you recommended...$15 minimum order. Found it on Amazon. $1.99 part and $4 shipping. Not unexpected but funny. Then I found a complete HDMI-DVI cable with ferrite cores already installed at each end at monoprice.com for 7.36 shipped. Now we're cooking with gas. If this works you're my hero!
