View Full Version : Offered Credit instead of Fix?
My HLP5674W that was purchased on 2/5/05 needs a new color wheel. I have an exteneded warranty on the unit and last night the store called me and said they would offer me an $800 dollar credit towards a new TV since the old TV can not be fixed. Is this normal. Could a TV that is just about 4 years old not have parts made for it anymore? Any suggestions or ideas about how to handle are greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Lee Bailey 10-29-08, 11:43 AM I would contact the manufacturer and verify this. Normally, there is support for a product for at least 5 years after it has been discontinued.
What are the terms in the warranty? I would expect a comparable replacement set if they can't repair yours.
in similar cases with sony they are offering about 70 percent off there web site prices as a replacement deal. I don't know what you paid but that seems to be about 50 % off.
Definetly check with the manufacturer.
Some more detail.
I paid $3100 for the set. 299 for 4 year extended.
I just called Samsung they have the color wheel in stock and available for two day delivery.

did you mention the story the store gave you, they might be interested.
Better yet give the stores corp office a letter, they may give you something.
I did mention it and they said they are not suprised by it but at the end of the day if you dont like the deal they are offering they have to fix it.

If you go to www.Samsungparts.com, put your model # into the left column, you will see your color wheel available for $95.55. So it's available. There are instructions available online where you can replace the color wheel yourself if you like doing those kind of things. So maybe, take their offer. Buy a color wheel and you'll have two hd tvs.

jerlent 10-29-08, 03:34 PM Where did you purchase the TV/Warranty from? I had a similar problem with my HL-P4663 and Circuit City replaced it with a HL-50A650. As you know the part is available. The reason why the store is saying they can't get the part is because they either don't want to pay to get your TV fixed or because sometimes service companies will no longer keep parts around for older TV's. I would take the $800 and put it towards something bigger & better. Sure the color wheel is the only thing you've had problems with, but what's next?

In most cases if he takes their offer, the compnay will request the old TV back. Most times they'll pick it up, have the service company pick it up or have you drop it off.
I didn't know that. I've never had an extended warranty, but maybe they won't want it. He could ask and see.

I've still got the original TV. If my repair wasn't for a 900-1200 part, and gutting the entire TV, I would take the deal and fix it in heartbeat. As it stands my TV isn't even worth that nearly new.
I told them that I would not take the offer unless the pot is sweetened and they said they would call me back in two hours. Within two hours I had a scheduled date of repair.
In my opinion it was a ploy to move product, and yes they were going to take the old TV away with them.

You do not state who the EW was with, but in virtually all cases this is done with 3rd parties. In other words, you are not buying an EW with Samsung or Sony etc, but a 3rd party.
Each 3rd party EW contract has different parameters.
In many (if not most), they can pay you the cost of the set (pro-rated in many cases) and walk away instead of repairing it.
Just because a part is available from Samsung, they might opt to just declare it a loss instead (especially if they have a high rate of claims on the particular type model/technology).
They then give the credit for you to the store - instead of buying the part.
So, all in all, the 3rd party really has no reason to push a new TV on you - and many people would rather have the credit towards a new set - as there have been many changes for the better since 2005 in HDTV and DLPs.
