So I have these IC boxes around my small can lights. When the bass kicks in, so do the buzzing metal boxes. Without putting my head or ear right next to them, I am assuming it is the sides rattling. They IC enclosures are just tab and slot joined and I bent the tabs as much as possible to make it as tight as I could.

What might be the best way to stop this awful vibration??????

Fire Caulk?
Duct Tape?
Wood shims?????
spit????
Bubble gum??????
Yet another use for Silly Putty??

I think I want to bend up some metalized duct tape and make shims out of that stuff to jam in between the metal and then fire fire caulk them in place. I say fire caulk cause I have that stuff around. If there is a better hi-temp caulk I can get at the HD or Lowes, I would be interested.....

Thanks in advance

Andy

I used silicone and have zero issues with mine on std IC 6" cans. I have pics somewhere in my thread that shows all of the places I siliconed. I would not use tape as it will relax over time due to heat.

I wrapped the can legs with tape before closing things up.

1) Used the included screw to set each leg to the correct length and lock it in place.

2) Crimped the tabs on each leg that allow the legs to slide along the can. This really tightened them up.

I have also done the silicone/electrical tape thing in my previous basements.

Unfortunately, I wasn't there long enough to make sure that they did well over time. :(

its not the legs that is making the noise. Its the IC boxes that go around the cans. These boxes are about 12" cubes and the sides and tops are what is rattling.

A dab of silicone should do the trick. I just did a sound check on my room and fortunately, none of my 23 cans are rattling..... or, if they are, I can't hear them.

Ditto on the above, plus I used the "real" HVAC tape (foil) and wrapped the elect box after connections made.

Oh yeah.. good point. I had forgotten about that.

On the Halo fixtures the electrical box covers (one on each side) have a spring clip on one end, and a tab/slot to secure the other end. The spring clip end was fine, but the tab would rattle in the slot. After I closed the box up I took my linemans pliers and bent the tab so it was tight in the slot.

Twenty three cans? How big is your room? Did you build boxes around the cans?

my room is 10.5 x 24.... All of the cans are 4". 6 of the cans are in the ceiling and are in MDF boxes to keep the sound in. 3 are in the screen wall and the remaining 14 are in the soffit and are spaced to line up with my fabric panels (ala Gpowers). They add up quickly. I'm only using 30w bulbs in 17 of them and 50w in the 6 in the ceiling. They are connected as 4 zones to a Grafix Eye 6 zone controller.

Sorry, didn't mean to hijack the thread.
