So my 6 (or 7?) year old bedroom Toshiba 42H81 developed convergence issues last night. Most likely it will need a repaired or soldered IC. I don't have any technical ability to fix this and the repair estimates are in the $450+ range.

My question is whether its worth it to fix this TV or replace it with a inexpensive 42" LCD/RP in the $900+ range?

For a little over $1K you can find a new Panasonic 1080p plasma that overall IMHO will produce a better image than a small $1K projector. I'm a fan of RPTVs, but only for screen sizes larger than 50 inches where prices for the better quality 1080p plamsas start become expensive. I own a recent vintage Toshiba 65" DLP RPTV and a JVC 70" DILA (LCoS) RPTV and they cost me about 1/4 the cost of a Panasonic 65" plasma. I do own two 42" plasmas that I use one in the master bedroom of each of my two houses.

I understand that. My main set is a Mits 65-833 RPTV.

I'm shocked that the plasmas and LCDs are now the same price (i've been out of the market for awhile).

I think i'll just scrap the old Tosh (which I bought with the help of AVS). Now i just have to decide if I want an LCD or Plasma.
