View Full Version : Viva la Resistance 2!!
bdshort 10-30-08, 10:36 PM I could have sworn there was a separate Resistance 2 thread separate from the beta, but I guess not, so here one is. Amazon just sent notification that they've shipped my copy out, so hopefully I'll have it my Monday. Sort of makes up for them sending out Fallout 3 and LBP late!
What with getting 3 great games at the same time, I'm not sure what I'll do to pick a game to play!
so's your face 10-31-08, 10:32 AM perhaps this could be a good thread to start talk about forming 8-man squads for the online campaign and online clans...
i'll have a copy on tuesday for shizzle! ;)
CHAVAN30 10-31-08, 10:56 AM i want to be in an 8 man squad. just did my first 8 co-op, and i am sure it will be a blast. geez there is a bunch of enemies.....
bdshort 10-31-08, 11:15 AM I'd love to be part of a regular co-op group to play through from beginning to end, rather than joining random games and jumping in at random parts of the story. I know they designed it to be played that way, but it would be fun to go through the levels in order.

YeaH I am picking up mine at GS, I pre-ordered online with in store P/U. I'd love to form an 8 man squad with fellow AVS'ers. Anyone can send me a buddy invite at the same SN, phipp01. I am going to "try" to do SP campaign before I jump into the online. I dont know how long I will be able to resist the urge to hit the "play online" selection though.
mboojigga 10-31-08, 12:01 PM I thought I read on N4G this got pushed to the end of November
Edit Disregard I think it was for the release date in AU and other regions for November 30th
Count me in, I'll have mine on the 4th if GS doesn't screw it up.
William Mapstone 10-31-08, 12:38 PM I hope I can pick it up at gamestop on election day, but I thought they said it wouldn't be available till wed.
I'm going to wait and make sure they've fixed the servers first. SOCOM didn't burn me too badly, but I did learn a lesson :) I haven't been able to play more than 5 minutes of R2 without getting booted in over a week.

just check the weekly add at the GS website... or check the weekly target or CC adds. they've been giving the date of availability in the weekly ads as of late. i'm nervously anticipating tuesday, but fear it may actually be wed.
although fallout was in store on tues so who knows, maybe we'll get lucky with R2...

Wow that sucks. The entire time I've had the beta, I haven't even had one issue. I haven't even experienced one instance of lag, it's been perfect.:)
augmental 10-31-08, 02:37 PM 1) What is the deal with the terrible cover art (the exception is the CE art)? The should have just stuck to the CE art.
2) Why is the bridge on the cover red like it is supposed to be the Golden Gate? The bridge is obviously the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. I know that in some of the screenshots / wallpapers it shows the bridge but is not red which would be correct. Kind of a strange choice / oversight.
Wow that sucks. The entire time I've had the beta, I haven't even had one issue. I haven't even experienced one instance of lag, it's been perfect.:)
I've never experienced lag; I just get booted all the time. It's annoying as hell. However, I found I was getting booted in Burnout a lot last night as well, so I tweaked my router's settings and it works fine now. Maybe I'll give R2 another shot this weekend and see if the problem was on my end, after all. Other online games have been fine (Battlefield, SOCOM, Guitar Hero...)
Billbofet 10-31-08, 02:47 PM From the beta, I'm both impressed with the lagless experience along with how out and out fun it is.
Day 1 for me. put my on your friends list if you want an extra bullet sponge:

What do you call a grenade magnet? I thought I might be able to escape them in this game, but it's COD4 grenades all over again (at least last night).

I agree with that. It wasnt just last night. Hell in core control I just camp (COD4 reference) and toss a grenade when someone gets near the core and I get a core defense and a kill. Just so many things they have screwed up in MP in regards to the first one IMO. Cant choose squads, respawn points, etc.

Are you serious? Resistance is notorious for having almost zero server issues. Were you playing ranked games and getting booted? Also you'll have to wait for R2 the beta was done on the 30th. I hope they keep stats from beta, I really hope they keep stats from beta. I leveled up to PFC overall and Im level 14 medic w00t! 30+ hours of gameplay in a week? My wife is not gonna be happy with me for the next few months *edit* year...
Smurf Byte 11-01-08, 10:41 AM You solved that gametape?
The butler did it. All four times.
Are you serious? Resistance is notorious for having almost zero server issues. Were you playing ranked games and getting booted?
lol, no I was just kidding guys! Yes, of course I'm serious. Who makes up stories about server problems on a game? And how is a series with only one entry 'notorious' for anything? And how would a lack of server problems in the first game guarantee anything about the servers for the second? Everything I've seen suggests this game is not only bigger but is going to have a lot more people playing it.
I don't know if the matches were ranked or not; I just picked co-op and found a room that wasn't full; it would last a few minutes and I'd get a network error and return to the title screen. Sometimes it would happen before the level even loaded.
Also you'll have to wait for R2 the beta was done on the 30th.
I don't even know what you mean, here. I say I'm waiting on R2 because of server issues in the beta, and you say "you'll have to wait for R2"? Okay... and the beta was extended to the 3rd; not sure how many times it needs to be said.
Add me in for 8 man co-op squad.
PSN - Leehom
just picked up the game at a mom and pop....
I will be playing until 4pm (giants) i will try and post some intial stuff with the SP campaign...alot of stuff is out of the bag already but if there is anything that is out of the ordinary (non-spoiler) i will try and share... :D
MY LIFE: Sad? I think not!

after playing through the first two SP levels/missions....I am somewhat impressed...
The game doesn't do anything new, feels like R1 with a fresh coat of wax-
But its still damn fun. awesome boss fights and enemies....plenty of ammo, rarely ever run out
graphically doesnt do anything new...dont expect to be blown away by the graphics

The colors aren't a bit less muted and more vivid?
And can you even get into the MP yet with the best running?

I havent tried to get into MP....will try later...
I do think the colors are more vivid yes now that I think of it...

Aletuner 11-03-08, 10:12 AM Ok I just read a gamespot preview on this and am a bit confused on the whole campaign and co-op options of the game.
Is the main campaign mode only playable as single-player? If not, what are the options? (i.e. local split screen only, etc.)
so's your face 11-03-08, 10:22 AM single and co-op are different campaigns...
benjamin-benjami 11-03-08, 10:41 AM my GT: benjaminbenjami if anyone wants to add me... to play
Aletuner 11-03-08, 10:44 AM single and co-op are different campaigns...
In the first one you could play the campaign with a buddy in split screen mode. Is there no way to play the main campaign with a friend?
kekborg 11-03-08, 10:45 AM In the first one you could play the campaign with a buddy in split screen mode. Is there no way to play the main campaign with a friend?
I'm assuming split screen campaign is still in it...man I hope so....
I'm assuming split screen campaign is still in it...man I hope so....
Split screen co-op is now part of a separate story line. The Single Player campaign (as Nathan Hale) is now 1 player.
I think the new co-op story mode is the best part of this game... can't wait for some 8 player action. :D
The more I play the better it gets...
Just had to kill a family that started to turn into chimera in their bedroom...they even had a lil chimera like a child try and come after me....starting to feel like a horror survival game after the first few levels its great...
Aletuner 11-03-08, 12:50 PM I stopped reading that one right away... use the [SPOILER] tags if you are going to give away parts of the story...
joeblow 11-03-08, 12:54 PM ^^^Same here!
Yeah use spolier tags. So with coop, can you save your progress or do you have to play through it all at once to beat it? It seems like it would be hard to save your progress if you don't play with the same people all the time. I am so glad the beta is still going on, that was a nice surprise. I can't wait to see the other coop levels.
Anyone using the bluetooth headset that came bundled with warhawk? will that be good enough for this game?
Conspiracy* 11-03-08, 01:24 PM the ambush in california looked to be ingame engine from the video I saw...it looked amazing. A huge improvement over R1, are you saying that its CG?

That is definitley a cut scene. I have no doubts though that the graphics will be better than R1. I am impressed by the beta, but honestly I am too busy trying to survive/kill to focus a whole lot on the graphics.
Also just called GS, and they said I could come pick it up first thing tomorrow.:)
thecodeman 11-03-08, 01:43 PM Cant wait to get mine tomorrow :D

I use the Warhawk headset (Jabra 125) for everything online. It is the best BT headset I have used with the PS3. Never needs a re-sync, battery lasts a looonnnngggg time, charges very quickly. I highly recommend it. I actually bought Warhawk, kept the mic, and sold the game:D

Like everyone else has said use the spoiler tags. I read the post and it kinda piss's me off that you didnt. Now I'll be playing the game waiting for that part. What a jerk
Yeah, spoiler tags for stuff like that, please. I hope there are more moments like that, since that one won't surprise me anymore.

blklightning 11-03-08, 09:52 PM viva la killzone. i had the r2 beta and thought the mp was meh. same for co-op. it's not that fun running around with a group of people shooting hundreds of rounds into four enemies all the while having to toss out ammo kits, heal people or provide a shield. biggest disappointment yet, imo.

I said the EXACT same thing..until I played the game...the beta is nowhere near as crisp and polished as the actual game...I bought the game for SP first then MP second...I am very impressed
WilliamR 11-04-08, 08:04 AM Thought we should have a thread to discuss this. A few of the others appear to be pre-release.
Here we go people! Let the resistance begin. I have been sooo looking forwad to this game.
So who picked it up and can give us their first impressions?
jayoldschool 11-04-08, 09:02 AM THIS (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1080345) thread wasn't "official" enough for you?;)

Hey, she called me too! She never said anything about, "...and I've already called Kekborg and 5,203,412 guys". That does it... I want my MSU sweatshirt back...
The beta was awesome...can't wait to pick this up today!
kinggabbo 11-04-08, 10:04 AM Picking it up today during lunch. Then playing it all night after work. It's gonna be awesome!!!
bdshort 11-04-08, 11:10 AM Gave the SP and Co-Op a bit of a play last night after work. I think it was because I was tired and had a headache, and really wanted to get back into the Wasteland, but I wasn't totally impressed with SP like I thought I'd be. But I'll chalk it up to being impatient and grumpy. Co-Op was a quick game on the Chicago map, where as soon as the game started, we were swarmed by chimera. We killed off that wave but didn't make it much further, heh! I joined another game, and for some reason was dumped into the middle of the map, about a mile away from any action at all.

Did that girl not sound like the ditsiest blond ever. I couldn't stop laughing at her voice.
Oh man, I am so glad we have an Official thread for this. Snarky, I know.
I can't wait to stay up and play this all night.
CHAVAN30 11-04-08, 11:25 AM just picked it up. look me up for osme co-op

I'm fearing that I'll have the same problem (about neck deep into F3 at the moment).

now to try and pry fallout away from the ps3... :o
THIS (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1080345) thread wasn't "official" enough for you?;)
It doesn't say "Official" in the title, so no.
Oooh this looks killer. Keep Circuit City alive people. Buy this game from them. I am. I can't stand Best Buy but either way good to keep competition alive.
Conspiracy* 11-04-08, 12:44 PM I'm fearing that I'll have the same problem (about neck deep into F3 at the moment).
So...Im getting a bit of a let down from campaign. Why does the word generic come to mind. R1 had a feeling of uneasiness with it, R2 doesnt give me that same feeling. The basecamp feels just like northern base from R1 but theres no creepiness to it.
I put the difficulty on difficult...and Im having absolutely no problem with these guys. 1 shot kills from the magnum? Why wouldnt all the sentinals just use that instead of the carbine? Hopefully it starts to pick up a bit but so far im kinda unimpressed with campaign.
Mw182006 11-04-08, 12:56 PM Does R2 offer 4 player splitscreen online??
just picked up the collector's edition today at lunch, can't wait to get home and play it! I have been waiting so long and finally I have it in my hands! now....5:00 just needs to hurry up

I thought she sounded cute. But now that I know she was calling all you other guys I guess I can delete her number. Damn there goes my hope for a date. Oh well at least I will have R2 to keep me company.
Campaign is really good. I already like the gameplay and how the weapons work better than R1. I have only played for a few minutes, but the colors and graphics look to be a bit better than R1. The color scheme while still muted is more colorful.
I am really looking forward to getting into this later tonight.
Multiplayer is not up yet.
Anyone who downloaded the beta will not have to do much installing except for a 24MB update. I don't know how long the install would be other wise.
Although I posted here, this and the other Resistance thread Viva need to be combined. No need for two.

Shorty when you spoke to her did she happen to mention my MSU sweatshirt?
That thing is my favorite one... :(
Picked a copy up at lunch today. played for an hour before going back to work. Game was awesome! I was playing online co-op.
Repost from the beta thread:
Can anybody with the full game comment about how a guest player works? In the beta, the guest player could not use my leveled up classes, they always reset to Level 1 for him. I think this really sucks, even if I went and leveled up the class he likes to play as he will always be Level 1 when he comes over to play. If this is how it is in the full game, then forget it.
confidenceman 11-04-08, 03:40 PM SP = meh. Slightly better than R1, but otherwise totally derivative of Halo, Half-Life 2, and Gears.
MP = one word: chaos. It's a controlled chaos, but it's crazy up in here. 60 player maps are nuts since the squad-based stuff always points you (and your enemies) in the direction of the action. Very cool.
Co-op = Amazing. It's just like a raid dungeon in an MMO. Really dig it. I wish there were more of these levels. Hell, I wish the whole game was like this. Insomniac should just ditch the single-player campaign and focus on an entire game built on these "raids."
Overall: don't expect much out of the ordinary from the single-player campaign. Jump right into online competitive and co-op play
How many co-op dungeons are there?
moshock 11-04-08, 03:50 PM Just bought R2 for $47.91 shipped from CC! Thoughts coming in upcoming weeks.
Wanna get the game that cheap too? I followed the instructions here: http://avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1081650
confidenceman 11-04-08, 05:36 PM How many co-op dungeons are there?I think it's a randomly generated portion from a number of possible different maps. So I don't think you get to choose which ones you play, just the map and number of players. I haven't spent enough time with it to know for sure.
Here's an early write up by Stephen Totilo:Insomniac reps told me that each level of the game’s co-op mode is set on three semi-randomly selected portions of the game’s environments, pulled from the competitive multiplayer maps. The game situates the players on one of six maps. Those maps have been divided by the Insomniac team into as many as 11 zones. The game randomly chooses three of the zones for players to fight through, configuring a set of basic combat objectives and ensuring that the third zone will be tuned to be the hardest — and probably contain a big boss.http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/2008/09/23/resistance-2-co-op-and-campaign-impressions-at-long-last/
I haven't read any full reviews yet and I've only put a few hours in so far, so I don't know for sure if this is how the retail version works. Anyone?
confidenceman 11-04-08, 05:39 PM THIS (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1080345) thread wasn't "official" enough for you?;)I think anything with "viva" in the title automatically counts as "official."
And, yes, I think most of the "official" discussion is happening over in that thread, folks.

What we should do is have an AVS competitive room made for 40 or 60 players and get a crap load of us in there. We could pass code it I am assuming and then pass it to each other in Pm's on here. It would be a blast, literally.
Conspiracy* 11-04-08, 06:19 PM Forget about what I said about the campaign being "generic" Only chapter 1 feels like that. Once you leave san fransico and head to Orick, the action gets good, the forest to orick has that creepy resistance feeling to it. Only complaint is that I've only played like 2-3 hours and Im in chapter 2 of 7. I havent been able to put much of a story together either...I think they almost dug too deep into peoples personal profiles and whatnot. I dont know if the events from project abraham were to have taken place before R1 or after. Theres dates on everyting but I havent drawn up a timeline yet.

I'm in for an AVS comp room.
T-minus 1 hour and 13 minutes til I get to go get my copy.

Yes believe it or not. I took the risk and left the beta thinking it was the full game minus campaign. I then started the R2 disc and it only promtped me to install 24 MB which must have been mainly the campaign.
Anyone who just installed directly and didn't have the beta how long was the initial install?
We could do some team DM like all AVS or 30 of us on one team against whomever.
OK, so after playing through the first chapter I can say that this game actually bests the first Resistance handily. The graphics, motion, weapons, enemies, blood, everything. Man, I am loving this game so far.
redshift1 11-04-08, 08:22 PM First Impressions:
I chose Hard Option and comments are for chapter one.
Improved graphics subtle but noticeable with wider color palette.
Weapons selection completely revamped including: added aiming function: no more than two weapons can be carried at once: weapons are subtly improved through color and audio.
HUD is revamped as well: Health bar is gone replaced by GOW style damage indicator screen becomes reddish and unfocused as damage increases: Directional pointer added: No more yellow vials of health.
More checkpoints than R1.
There are some dark screens which last a few seconds when re-spawning I've never seen this in a game before.
So far I like this version, in my opinion, it's an improvement over R1 visually and action wise. It will take some gameplay to adjust to the changes because some controller functions have changed. Based on initial game play and visuals IMO any rating below 90 is inaccurate especially considering some recent scores for other games.
bdshort 11-04-08, 08:24 PM Servers were up yesterday (Monday) - I was able to get into a co-op game anyway.
phipp01 11-04-08, 08:33 PM Yes believe it or not.
I just popped R2 in and it is downloading the 24MB update. I think thats the patch they came out with in the beta. So I guess its safe to say you can delete the beta and free up 2 gigs of space. I'll post some impressions tomorrow.
What is everyone playing the SP campaign on? Normal, hard, easy?

I went normal and at times it is easy and also I die easy, so far a fair mix.
confidenceman 11-04-08, 10:11 PM I chose Normal difficulty. Dying quite a bit, but luckily there are frequent checkpoints.
But even though I'm dying a lot, I don't know that I would call the game "difficult." Most of those deaths are from falling into water (where Furies eat you), peaking my head out when I shouldn't, or from Chameleons running me down. It's a bit of trial and error in the single-player. Annoying. So I'm not sure that Easy or Hard would be much different.
Anyone else think the AI is dumber than in R1?
Anyhow, this game's all about co-op and competitive online play. Single-player's just not different enough from HL2, Halo, or Gears.
fragile-reality 11-04-08, 10:15 PM Split screen co-op is now part of a separate story line. The Single Player campaign (as Nathan Hale) is now 1 player.
I think the new co-op story mode is the best part of this game... can't wait for some 8 player action. :D
Damn. That's complete and utter crap. Being able to play the game in co-op mode was one of the features I liked the best about the first resistance. I played it through four times in co-op. My anticipation for the game has dropped down a notch now.
joe_six_pack 11-04-08, 10:40 PM yeah, it's too bad they made the single player have no offline coop (or online coop for that matter).
yeah, it's too bad they made the single player have no offline coop (or online coop for that matter).
That is definitely a little disappointing. I was looking forward to playing the single player campaign with a friend of mine, like we did in the first one.
This other style of co-op will still be fun I guess. :( :p
confidenceman 11-04-08, 10:57 PM This other style of co-op will still be fun I guess. :( :pYou all should love it. If you wanted the old kind of co-op, just play the first game again. This new style will set a new standard in how co-op works. Trust me. It's that awesome. :D

guitarlp 11-05-08, 01:13 AM I just played a round of competative play... pretty intense.
Question though: I didn't gain any experience and it appears I wasn't in a ranked room. Problem is, I see no way of finding ranked rooms. Are the ranked rooms not online yet?
redshift1 11-05-08, 01:19 AM The visuals are amazing I'm running my ps3 through an Integra preamp to a sony XBR3 46 via HDMI the quality is unbelievable. As good as those screen shots above.
Chief Ediri 11-05-08, 01:21 AM I decided to get this game over Fallout 3. So now I am leaving my impressions after playing the prologue and the 1st chapter of the single-player campaign.
There is one word that can describe this game: EPIC. So far, everything is vastly improved over the 1st one. Graphics, sound, game play, story, music, etc. The list goes on and on. The game is that good. I only played the 1st two levels and I already had some amazing battles against creatures of immense size. Now that Nathan speaks throughout the story/cinematics, you get a added feel to the game that wasn't there in the 1st Resistance.
The graphics are some of the best I seen this gen, and IMO a lot better than what I seen from Gears 1/2. The weapons, new and old, have some great detailing and the sound of the guns are perfectly suited for them as well. I am most impressed by how bad ass the Bullseye looks now. The menus are very slick as well.
My only complaint really is that the controls have been tweaked around, but mainly for the better. It will take some time to get used to, but once you do, they are much better than the 1st one. Plus also the game only has a prologue and 7 chapters, so it might end up being a short game for plenty of people. Good news is that each chapter ranges from a hour to hour and a half to beat.
If you have any ?'s, feel free to ask. But as of right now, this is my favorite PS3 game so far along with MGS 4 and Heavenly Sword. Once again, everything in this game is a vast improvement from the 1st one. I also might end up liking this a lot more than Gears 2, its really that good.
MaliciousBraham 11-05-08, 01:21 AM Does the 2 player local co-op split the screen funny? I am seeing a 4:3 space with split top and bottom, Black bars on the sides... Is that how it's supposed to work?
Also, when I installed, it downloaded the 24mb update, but also did a 90 sec installation/setup. But I already had the beta installed, so I dont know. I had both the beta and the retail in my list afterwards.
There isn't one thing in R2 that is as good as or like R1, because everything is better on the campaign in R2.
The colors, the gameplay, weapons, movement, shooting, AI,....all are so much better IMO than R1. I am simply blown away by this second edition. Parts of the forest in Orick and the movement through that area has an Uncharted look and feel to it. The way the guns fire and detail associated with firing and killing enemies with the more vibrant colors and details make playing it so much fun. I couldn't stop I just wanted to keep on going it is that kind of game. Now to try some MP and see if it differs much from the Beta.
CHAVAN30 11-05-08, 07:12 AM i pretty much agree with everyone. anyone complaining aboot the graphics must not actually have the game. the battles are epic and intense, and insomniac did a good job of letting you know where you are supposed to be at on any map. i am not a big fan of "wander" open world games. i like to have an agenda. it plays ALOT like Halo3, just bigger and badder.
and the shotgun and magnum owns!
ashunte23 11-05-08, 07:30 AM are those screenshots above from ps3??? my game doesnt look that polished....

WilliamR 11-05-08, 08:10 AM I guess we are using this thread for the discussion.
Well, a few hours into the game and I am enjoying it. However, it does have some negatives. I absolutely hate that you can only carry two weapons at once. Just hate it. Resistance 1 had a great weapon management screen. So dissapointed that I have to decide what to take so often.
Graphics outside are stunning, fantastic, incredible. However, once you go into an underground structure the graphics really take a drop. Very bland, few colors, not much detail. Good thing you are outside a lot.
The game runs and feels just like Resistance 1. Very buttery smooth. Really impressed with this engine. It just flows so nicely.
Excellent checkpoints. They are very frequent and right before anything important. Really helps since you can't save it anywhere.
Overall, excellent purchase, and an improvement on the original.
I have noticed that no one has had any lag or dropped connections! I played as a medic online last night for 5 hours. It is a great game!!
is this game on another platform? joking!
Yeah, it must have been the 360 version because games on the 360 always look better.

Ditto. What a GREAT improvement over the original - which was not bad in it's own right IMO. I was blown away with the outdoor graphics and sounds. An absolute purchase for those with any interest in the genre. I haven't played any online, which I had intended, as I was going to play a few minutes of the SP campaign and 3 hours later I realized I needed to go to bed!
And as others have said, the Magnum rules!
LOVE the game but very unfortunate that there is no offline coop story/campaign mode. A friend and I sat down after getting the game to play through it like we did with R1 and we were shocked to have no story for us to play through. Very unfortunate. Plus all we did was get network errors all yesterday when trying to play online.
kinggabbo 11-05-08, 09:54 AM I just played a round of competative play... pretty intense.

To play ranked you have to choose the "PLAY" option. It will then go into matchmaking. Unfortunately, it seems either not many people are choosing that or the matchmaking is not so good. The max number of players I've ever played with on a ranked match was 15 or so. I wish they would fix that. If you can't play with 40-60 players on ranked, what's the incentive to play it?
Anyhow, this game's all about co-op and competitive online play. Single-player's just not different enough from HL2, Halo, or Gears.
Now you are getting dumb.
Billbofet 11-05-08, 10:09 AM I would agree that this game is a huge improvement over the original. The online options and gamemodes are incredible and I'll be getting a ton of play out of this.
My gripe so far is that the single player game is pretty average, maybe slightly above average. It feels too scripted and I don't get the epic feel from it. Maybe I'm not feeling it since the game is in first person. I think epic scale moments work best in third person.
Also, I am not at all finding the graphics to be that great. It's amazing what this game pulls off with 60 players at once and no lag, but the graphics even in the single player campaign are pretty average to me.
That being said, I love the game so far and co-op is A Number One: The Duke.

Totally agree about the weapons. It sucks only carrying 2. I am stuck in chapter 4 right now because I was supposed to take the wraith but I used all of its bullets on the leapers. So now I have the carbine and bullseye and I am up against those guys with the shields, 2 of them, and some chimera and all I do is die. So I decide to take a break and play some online and now I have to update the F/W for the PS3. So I have about 5 hours of SP play time in and I am on chapter 4 on normal. Once I go through on normal I am going to try difficult. The graphics on the outside are definitely better than underground. All in all very happy so far except for the weapons you can carry.
Mr tapout is it playing at 1080p? or do we have to do the PS3 trick of disabling all the other resolutions to make it 1080p

It depends on if you like it. So... rent first, buy if you like the multiplayer.
phipp01 11-05-08, 10:52 AM Is Resistance 2 a buy or rental? I have SOCOM now and getting Gears on Friday. Is it worth the $63 to buy or $8 to rent?
To me it was a buy because I am into online play alot. You could always rent first then buy if you are undecided.

I played some of the online beta but have just been playing the single player since I got the disc. I love the campaign. Hopefully its as long as RFOM but I don't think it is.
bplewis24 11-05-08, 11:37 AM Hi.
I would prefer to use this thread since it has "official" in the title and I only do official talk in the "official" threads. It is very important to me that official threads have the word "official" in it for search purposes (I always search for "official" or "owners" threads on AVS when looking for a product/game, etc).
However the law of forumus momentus takes precedent here. Since that other thread has more posts and the party seems to be gathering momentum over there, I shall hereby deem that thread the official thread for all persons named Brandon and/or trollers.
Carry on,
Brandon

my65ffrcobra 11-05-08, 11:46 AM some more observations
I thought I would hate the two gun system, but I really like it. With R1 I could just pause the action and think about my next move and select the exact weapon, this is actually a pretty big disservice when you play online. So not being able to pause it makes the game more immersive to me.
I have played some Halo 3 and to me the graphics are horrible I just have a hard time seeing stuff. My screen is 137 inches so Its pretty apparent when resolution is not up there even though my projector is only 720p.
I don't know what they did to the farlye (sp) but I loved it before but its even better now. The marksman is fun to. I really like that the scope is now L1 instead of R3, I would always accidentaly go into zoom mode at the worst times before.
I love all the rushes of bad guys at you I die pretty often on normal but it is really rewarding when you pull it off.

joe_six_pack 11-05-08, 01:18 PM personally I find the single player campaign somewhat annoying. I really dislike the 1-hit kill death sequences. I also prefer the old school life bar. Some parts of the campaign are good, some are bad. I estimate that I'm about 1/2 way through it on hard difficulty.
How dare you speak ill of the WW2 thread!
I'm curious to get some times coming in for finishing the game. I can't remember but I thought R1 was actually pretty long game. How many chapters/levels in this game?

because the full RGB setting gives a deeper black/higher contrast look to the game at the expense of crushing black levels in darker games. i think for resistance 2 RGB setting on full is best. games like Bioshock though RGB needs to be set to limited because you wouldnt be able to see anything. these settings are on the PS3 by the way, not the tv.

I understood that you were talking about the PS3 settings. I was just under the impression that it depends on what your display accepts as to what it should be set to.
I think I'm on full but it's been a while since I've messed with any of the settings, now is a good time to go through again. I'm running on my SXRD 60A3000.
My Orrick level beginning and in the forest with the Predatos just seemed a little bright when staring up at some of the trees, might be because I had all the lights off as well.

Could be, as well as other settings.. This set has a crap load of settings which can be good and bad.. Last adjustments were made to make Uncharted look its best so I'm sure those probably aren't the best for Resistance 2.
_Avarice_ 11-05-08, 02:01 PM Dude. S'mores.

My mind is torn. Resistance 2, Fallout 3, or Gears 2. Doesn't help that I still have Folklore, Orange Box, Dead Space, and NHL 09 still waiting to be played. So many good games, so little time.

So, yeah, the online games aren't explained very well in the manual or in the game. I'm still trying to figure out how some of the game types even work. As fun as co-op is, it took a while to figure out how all the different classes, berserks, and abilities work.
Also, I am not at all finding the graphics to be that great. They're hit and miss. Sometimes they're great. Sometimes they're drab. Sometimes they're ugly.

augmental 11-05-08, 02:14 PM I thought that in co-op ALL members of the team have to die for the mission to fail? I just got done playing a match where at least one or two were still alive (myself included) and the Mission was failed.
moshock 11-05-08, 02:16 PM Because it's not an AVS Playstation thread until someone trolls about Socom...

I think it's all members of the party have to die once - not at the same time. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but that was my understanding anyway...

bplewis24 11-05-08, 02:23 PM All members have to be dead at the same time for the mission to fail.
Once last night, 7 of us were playing in our 3rd attempt to complete a mission. I was the medic and all 6 others had died. I ran like a schoolgirl to stay alive to keep the mission from failing.

Mmmmmm....s'mores :)
augmental 11-05-08, 02:27 PM So is it documented anywhere that it is 'die once during the mission' or 'die all at one time during the mission'? If it is die all at one time then we found ourselves a nice nasty bug!!!
I was running away from the firefight with full health and everyone else died and it still said Mission Failed...I actually was still attacking a few Chimera while the Mission Failed window was on screen.
Big_Mog 11-05-08, 02:39 PM I was trying to play Co-op locally with a buddy (same system, offline) and the game went to split screen (cool no problem) but then there were bars on the right and left side (projecting a 4:3 image). Anyone else having this problem? Also is there like a co op story mode? because when i tried playing co op, it just took me straight into fighting guys on a street, and I wanted to play the story mode like the first Resistance. Appreciate the help guys.
Aletuner 11-05-08, 02:51 PM Nope. You cannot play the "story mode" which is the single player only campaign in this one with a buddy. :( It's... single player only.
Which is a shame. :(

Well in the beta it was all dead at one time. Makes no sense "die once during a mission".

Yeah, I have been getting network errors sporadically in addition to the Mission Failed bug.
You don't want the A3000 on RGB full and within reason for those who know their displays virtually no one with an HDTV should have RGB full on. Computer monitors that double as tv's yes, but not HDTV's that double as PC monitors.

Well I know my display reasonably well, lets just say we have gotten "close", are you saying I shouldnt have it on full? I just left it as the PS3 set it and I do know it set it to full. Whats wrong with the full setting? I know I am a moron. but please answer anyway

No seriously, I have a Pioneer plasma and I have to use limited.

There have been threads in this, the BD player forum and RPTV forums and I am sure other AVS forums regarding Full RGB. You can do a search and I am not good at explaining the long version with technical details but suffice it to say only those who use PC monitors should really be using RGB full. Now some will say you need to recalibrate when using RGB full for displays that exhibit black crush etc., but measurements suggests that the results are the same as using limited. Many of us discovered this while playing Uncharted in the dark areas we had trouble discerning some detail on screen due to black crush.
Oh, and I surmise you are less of a moron than me as I learn from the those on here that are less moronic. :D
One thing of importance to note. I use one HDMI from my AVR for all my sources, so I have one setting on my display that I leave the same for BD's, PS3 games, cable HDTV, and my HTPC. If I were to calibrate for RGB Full my display would be off for my other sources.

So I guess I am good to go.
BTW 12 hours game time and I am almost done chapter 6. Not bad for an old man, but alot quicker than the first one. I really liked on the first one the woman telling the story and I know this is from Hale's propestive but I kinda miss the story telling. I will either be done tonight or tomorrow SP and I am probably going to go through again on easy to get the intel. I missed alot of intel on normal. Then I am going to try difficult. and if that pisses me off its on to online :D

Good stuff. I am 47 but I have been gaming since the game rooms of the 70's. And I agree with missing the woman's voice. It was sexy as well.

R1 was dark too. I had to turn my brightness from 55 to 70 and turn on dynamic contrast on in order to play the game. RGB is limited.
OK just got home to play this game.
For reference I am on a 60 inch Sony KDS-60A2000 1080p.
I am currently playing through the first level, and OMFG those earlier pics do not lie. This is how the game looks, It may be the most gorgeous game I have ever seen in my life.
I'm currently updating my system to play online, hence me typing this. As soon as thats done going to try to force it into 1080p via the 1080p trick and see what that looks like.

That might be taking it a bit too far. COD4 did a better job on the first level giving me that sinking ship feeling

briankmonkey 11-05-08, 08:34 PM LOL, I read your original post and had to wonder if you were serious. Might as well have said Virtua Fighter 1 has better character models than Resistance 2. It wasn't mean, just completely idiotic ;)

I'll have to try the 1080p to see if I notice a difference. Personally I'm fine with the graphics, some things look great, others below average and everything in between. I love that it all runs buttery smooth even with dozens of characters on screen at once and bullets flying over the place.
Textures are inconsistant, that seems to be the biggest thing I'm noticing.
I do miss having visual trails on the main gun a little.
I bet all the Beta pips already know this,BuT for the people that don't you can force the game into 1080p. It doesn't lag at all, some games do when forced to that resolution.
And i just played my first Online co-op match. Sooo fun, I'm sure the people that have been playing it for awhile might be sick of it,but man I loved it.
sayanythingrock 11-05-08, 09:19 PM just picked it up, my first ps3 purchase. played a couple multiplayer games fun stuff. now im off to story mode
I thought tht I was going to be disappointed with R2 compared to R1 but..... MAN... Campaign mode keeps scaring the crap out of me... especially with the sound cranked. This game is awesome but I do miss the woman telling the story, the bullet trails and the offline coop mode like others have mentioned.
Just bought it tonight. Played an hour of campaign and half hour of multiplayer. Impressions:
I definitely am getting a different feel from this one, in a good way. I feel like the controls, aiming, movements, are smoother (and even a little slower, for the better). Only thing Im not so sure about yet is the sprinting. It still feels awkward to me unlike COD4 sprint. Does anyone have a recommendation for best custom controller setting for sprinting? I tried the left stick like COD4 but it felt awkward.
Graphics, like others have mentioned, really are gorgeous in spots and bland in others. (Corridors, blah). When I walked out to the Golden Gate bridge though, I was amazed. I loved the style of R1 a lot though so no surprises I love 2.
Multiplayer was a riot...I was in a room of about 45. It can be chaotic but my style of play (guns blazing) seemed to really rack up the assists. I caught about 5 people off guard once and unloaded every grenade thingy I had and got a nice 5 kill streak. Im afraid when Gears 2 comes out I wont give this enough time to get good, but its still a riot. I will have to balance playing Gears 2 and this, hopefully being good at both, haha. I dont really prefer the custom game searching though, but again I didnt spend much time with it. Im hoping there is a way to just do a quick play team deathmatch sort of like entering a playlist in Halo 3, but I honestly just dont know if thats there or not. Still a blast though.

ok let me explain, if your tv has a rgb full setting then setting the ps3 to full and your tv to full will produce the best picture. if your tv does not, make sure the tv and ps3 are both set to limited.
btw if you are running hdmi thru a av receiver make sure your receiver can pass rgb full before setting. most receivers can't and end up clipping blacks.

Yeah, I take back what I say about this being the best looking game of all time LOL. that first section where they drop you in was awesome, but then you go inside the sub,and its not so good looking anymore. I think they could have done a better job with the water for instance.
Either way the game so far rocks, multiplayer = fun,co-op =fun, and the SP isn't to shabby

No this is wrong. DO not set your PS3 and tv to full RGB. Mine display does do RGB full.
Search the threads about RGB full and limited and you will see technical explanations discussing why not to set your tv and PS3 to full RGB. My receiver also does pass full RGB.
I think the threads discussing it conclude that the end result of setting your display to Full RGB is that even after calibrating the display one ends up with the same results as leaving it on limited for the color range related to limited.

Oh ok so for some reason the game is telling my reciever it has DTS support when it truly doesn't? Damn that sucks. Gotta keep checking and unchecking whenever i want to watch a movie or play another game that does support it.

You whoose. SP?:D Sure come over from the 360 forum and whine about how hard a PS3 title is. :D I kid, I kid. I have played Gears and a few other 360 titles when I borrowed my friends and they are no walk in the park either. Difficult is difficult.
Normal seemed easy enough for me, but then there were times it seemed very difficult and I would die easy until I got the hang of how to get around a big boss or enemy and how to best utilize weapons. I was thinking of just playing on difficult but by low self esteem keeps telling me I suck and play it on normal. :o Hey some people really just are leaps and bounds better than others at FPSs.
Enjoying it otherwise?
confidenceman 11-06-08, 02:18 AM Anyone else getting their butt kicked by the 'normal' difficulty setting? I bumped it down to casual after the first several chapters because I was simply dying too much...but casual seems WAY too casual... Seems like to big of a gap to me. -2 centsThe problem is that there are too many trial-and-error moments (platforming, one-hit kill enemies, etc.). It's not that the game's difficult so much as it is "cheap." Having a chameleon rush at you with no warning sucks. Having a second pop up is worse. And a third is, well, just stupid.
So, yeah, I've been dying a lot, more than in most other FPS games that are supposedly difficult. Single-player has pissed me off in too many ways to list. Now I'm just finishing it to finish it (on chapter 6). But I'd much rather be playing co-op and competitive.
I finished the game on Normal 2 days ago. the game is just awesome I'm planing to play again on difficult and see how this goes, But the Co-op is keeping me busy. :)
LarryMoeCurly 11-06-08, 02:49 AM brebaz,

Thanks,
redshift1 11-06-08, 03:51 AM Playing on difficult... not bad with the frequent automatic saves but it's nothing to die 20-30 times on some acts especially when you are under intense fire right away and there's nowhere to hide. I should be done early in Obamas second term.

There are warnings. For the one you mentioned, he rumbles up from a distance first so you can hear where he's coming from and can even sprint dodge to avoid the initial hit if not at a good firing angle. One shotgun blast and he dies. So far (on normal) I'd say the difficulty has been at most 7/10. The game itself is stellar though... an easy 9.25/10.0 for the solo game alone.

There are spots where I was getting PO'ed and I would just play online for a while or just take a break altogether and watch some TV. Once I beat it today on normal I am going thru again on easy just so I can get my master spy trophy :D. I have 11 of the 39 already. I am going to try to get all 39. I know, I know, I am a trophy whore
ugabuga 11-06-08, 08:27 AM Picked up the game last night and played online coop for an hour, definitely fun though it took me a little while to know what I was doing. I connected my Plantronics BT headset to give it a try and seemed to work ok.

I am doing the last chapter right now and to the end of chapter 6 was 12 hours. So at most on normal for me (41 year old, losing eye hand coordination plus eyesight going to hell) maybe 14 to 15 hours. I'll post the total when I am done some time today. Plus it helps being laid off and unemployed, not that I am advocating doing something to piss your boss off so he fires you but the game will take up your daytime hours :D.

That sound about good length. I don't have as much time as I used to to play games. I can't go through 100+ hours of FF games anymore. Oh, and the CEO is in the office today. I'm gonna go work on getting some extra gaming time made available. :D

Oh and I should add (which I am assuming the game counts as game time) That probably includes about 2 hours of pause time to have a smoke, grab a beer, get something to eat breaks.

number1laing 11-06-08, 10:17 AM How is the singleplayer in Resistance 2 compared to the first one? I found the first one to be a solid but unspectacular Halo clone from beginning to end. I wasn't too crazy about Ratchet & Clank.

Click on the "PLAY" option to find ranked. Unfortunately, the rooms never fill up, I think due to the way Insomniac has matchmaking set up. I'm sure there are plenty of people trying to get into ranked though. This was the same with Resistance 1. Most people played unranked. If the ranked games would have more than 10-15 people in them, I would play them.
jayoldschool 11-06-08, 10:23 AM You need to party with more people. My clan had 20 every night (with others waiting) playing ranked on RFoM. We'll have 30 for R2:D
