View Full Version : How to set up a monitor in second room (HDMI + component/DVI issues)

I'd like to set up a second TV in my living room as a 'monitor' to view the same output from my HT room. The rooms share a wall and I have access through the wall since the cable outlets mirror each other on that opposing wall. The problem is my second TV is a pre-HDMI plasma TV that only accepts component audio/video (or DVI + component audio). I also need to know how I can use my remotes in the living room for the components in the HT room. Nothing is set up, so it's possible that I won't need a remote extender, but I'd like to know what my options are if I do. Hopefully the attached picture makes everything clear.

I have a Comcast HD DVR (DCH 3416/6385/000/160 on the sticker) and I've already tried HDMI and component simultaneously. It doesn't work.

Outputs to HDMI switch:
Comcast HD DVR
HD-DVD player
Blu-Ray player

I'm using a Panasonic XR55 receiver for audio switching (no HDMI).

Use component from your DVR along with a 1x2 component amp and take component to both TVs. Because of HDCP issues, it would be extremely problematic to try and split the HDMI and then downconvert to component analog.

Another possible option but potentially fraught with handshaking issues is to use a 1x2 HDMI splitter and then convert the HDMI to DVI. Your DVR box should still output audio even with HDMI selected (most do) and use that audio coupled with the DVI to the second TV. But, there will be alot of buts...Does the DVR still output analog audio with HDMI selected (test it), is your display HDCP compliant DVI, and will the 1x2 split work with the handshaking necessary.

Easy fix, thanks! I want to watch HDTV in the living room without paying Comcast $20/month for another box. That limits the monitor to cable TV since it omits the HDMI signals from the HD/BD players, but that's fine.

A quick call to Monoprice and they directed me to exactly what I need to connect everything using this wall plate (http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=105&cp_id=10517&cs_id=1051703&p_id=1103&seq=1&format=2) and it's corresponding keystone jacks for <$13 shipped.

I was thinking HDMI, I may not need a component amp. I'll have to look at my receiver and crack open the manual because I know there's a monitor option there.

It turns out I do need a component amp. Until this thread I hadn't heard of them, are there any good buys out there? I found a few sites selling the same model for $57 + s/h.
