I know I'm not the first person to ask about this, and trust me, I know there is a lot of information out there, but it turns out that no matter how much information I checked into, and how many similar working setups I found, when I tried it myself, I failed. So with my dead setup in hand and frustrated, I'll just ask someone myself.

Basically, I'm trying to hook my PS3 up to a Dell UltraSharp 1707FP (I had a link showing the specs, but apparently I'm a spammer) monitor. It is NON-HDCP compliant, hence the difficulty.

So I found that I would get the PS3 Component Cables > RGB Component Coupler > Component to VGA Adapter. Obviously this doesn't work or I wouldn't be here. I just get "Unsupported Video Output" message on my monitor. Is it the SETTINGS or the SETUP that's wrong here? And if it's the setup, what is a good alternative, given that I'm a college student and these $200 digital converter boxes are a little out of reach.

You would need a Component to VGA transcoder , the PS3 does not do native RGB via the component connection and even if it did you would need a SoG capable monitor (Sync on Green) . There are many component to VGA transcoders out there for less than $200 , some are even under $100 . Something like this example should do the trick : http://www.datapro.net/products/hdtv-component-to-vga-converter.html .

One of these might work as well (not certain however since I have never used one) : http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=101&cp_id=10114&cs_id=1011406&p_id=4631&seq=1&format=2 . You would also require an HDMI to DVI cable/adapter to connect to the older non-HDMI equipped monitor .
