View Full Version : Considering the Samsung LN40A650
stockcerts 11-01-08, 06:56 PM I've been researching 40" LCD's for the past week and originally I was going to spend about $1000-. I then read about the Samsung LN40A650 and it sounds like the best thing going in its class. Best Buy is selling it for $1799-, Amazon has it for $1297-. I was thinking that if I do buy it I would have to get it from Amazon as that's too big of a price difference, and I wouldn't spend $1800- on a TV.
Today I stopped at Best Buy and they said they'd price match Amazon and they could have it in the store in about four days.
Just like for everyone, money is a little tight, but I just moved into a new condo and I have a old fashioned TV that takes up lots of space and I'd love to get rid of it. In my living room the wall above the fireplace was wired for power and cable. Now I just need to decide for sure if this is the model I want, and if I'm willing to let go of the cash!
jaykresge 11-01-08, 07:22 PM Keep in mind that Amazon offers it tax free, and with free shipping. If you ordered it now, you'd likely get it within5 days, delivered straight to your door.
Jakeman02 11-01-08, 07:36 PM Yes, consider on a price match from BB you still will get zinged sales tax on a $1297 purchase, plus I'm sure on a price match that BB doesn't include delivery inside your home, setup for you and make sure everything is working properly. Amazons White Glove Delivery is included in their offer which is outlined below. I'm sure BB has an extra charge for this but you could ask to be sure. If BB will include that in the offer with the price match then personally I'd pay the sales tax to go local, it's still a hellova deal but if they won't include the setup delivery which is doubtful on a price match I'd swing Amazon.
Amazons Free White Glove Delivery:
When you purchase this TV from Amazon.com, it receives our special white-glove delivery service. After your purchase, an agent will call you within five days to arrange delivery. At your home, delivery experts will: carry your product to any accessible room in your home -- including upstairs rooms -- provided the package will fit; unpack your product and place it on assembled furniture; provide a setup checklist; and remove all packing materials from your home if you wish.
stockcerts 11-01-08, 07:47 PM The White Glove delivery is appealing as I live on the 3rd floor of my condo complex. A few concerns....if there is a dead pixel or some other issue would I be better off with Best Buy? Also, I'm almost certain last time I made a purchase from Amazon I got charged tax. I believe the reason is because I'm in Calif and that's where the order was taken, although I'm not exactly sure of the reason.
amb7247 11-01-08, 11:53 PM no sales tax to california according to amazon.com:

I just got this TV a few weeks ago from amazon.com and its a great TV. TONs of options when setting up and calibrating the TV. So much so you'll want to pick up a DVE calibration disk to set up the TV properly. As for the whiteglove, makes sure to look over the TV good and having something playing on it while you look at it to verify and making sure its good to go. If you get any dead pixels or anything on the set isnt right or to your satisfaction, tell them to return the tv and having it exchanged. You dnt have to accept it if there is something wrong with it.
Amazon will also take it back no charge if you find any dead pixels.
stockcerts 11-02-08, 12:29 AM I just sent an e-mail to Amazon to confirm that there's no tax if I purchase the TV. If they confirm, I will be placing the order! :)
stockcerts 11-02-08, 01:02 AM I also meant to ask, how many of you buy extended warranties on LCD tv's? I read an article that promoted buying an extended warranty. Just curious as to your thoughts on this.
Jakeman02 11-02-08, 01:51 AM I'll more than likely purchase one after I pull the trigger on the set. It's up to the individual but overall LCDs aren't as problem free as the CRTs. If you do decide to get one I would highly advise checking prices, terms and then purchasing one separate from your tv purchase. You can get a much better deal that way. There is a ex warranty thread floating around here, I'll try to find the link for you to research.

squirt2 11-02-08, 07:49 AM When I bought mine, I registered with Samsung and they gave me 3 more months on top of the 1 year it comes with. Plus my credit card, I put it on gives me a year on top of that. I think some cards will even give you 2 additional years free. I figure the money I saved I'll put towards a newer, better, and cheaper ( the way prices keep going down ) one, if it breaks down after the warranties are gone.
amb7247 11-02-08, 12:13 PM but I typlically hate manufactuers warranties. What your CC only does it extend only what the manufactuer covers nothing more. So if samsungs dead pixel policy is no more than 5 pixels a year later you get 3 pixels sorry no swap. Thats just how they are. So I dont bank on card warranties. They dont mean much to me.
2nd, I do however recommend CPS or mack. I went with CPS as I have a year through samsung but 3 more years in home. If they cant fix then they ship for repair. cant repair then can try to get a replacement. stockcerts I'll send you a PM where you can get a CPS. A friendly forum member here owns his on site where you can buy them from and get the warranty code through email in just hours.

Thanks, I appreciate it!
stockcerts 11-02-08, 09:55 PM I just placed the order with Amazon. Of course it took a couple of beers, but I think it was my best choice...and the best place to order it from. No tax, no shipping, reputable vendor, great product!

Nothing wrong with making a big decision after a few beers. That's about what it took for me to get the courage to propose and to this day it's the best decision I've ever made.
stockcerts 11-03-08, 11:04 PM The new TV should be arriving Wednesday or Thursday. It's in Reno, NV now, and I live in Northern California.
Once it's here I'll look for the calibration threads. Above my fireplace (live in a condo) it's been pre-wired for cable and power. I have a HD DVR from Comcast. How do you connect the DVR if you're cable comes out of the wall? I'm guessing there is a way to wire the DVR back into the wall so it's coming out the existing connection that's already in place. Hope that makes sense...hard to explain. I'll need to buy a bracket soon as well for wall mounting. I'll check at Amazon to see what's available and get it in the near future.
Either way, I'm very excited!
