Is it account specific, or do you think they fixed it for everyone? I'll update my remote later and check. Thanks for the info.

I emailed them (Logitech) about two WDTV issues. The setup script for tuning on the WDTV, my LCD and setting the LCD to HDMI 2 insisted on adding a "Set WDTV to Tuner" command which turned on my AV receiver (which I was not using for sound in this instance). The other was the inability to program the OK button. They removed the bogus command and programed the Harmony OK button to send an OK/Enter to the WDTV. Not sure if it was just fixed for me or if they updated things for everyone.....

For those who cannot get one at BestBuy, Buy.com now has them for $99, free shipping. Even though I'm happy I grabbed one at BestBuy, I could have saved $7 in NJ sales tax if I had waited (plus the gas to drive to the store).

ScottWD,

PLEASE HELP Add WMV (VC1) support! THanks!! Many of us have tons of these files because they are very popular. WD TV is awesome, but would be even better if it can support these files.

Thanks!!!

No remote problems with mine that I've noticed. Used the stock remote for the first few days and just finally got to programming my Harmony for it. The only glitch I've encountered was the fast forwarding jumping back to close to where I started. I'm not big into Subtitles or foriegn movies, but would like to see the subs moved lower on the screen for when I do use them. Any .srt subs I needed I've found at Subscene. Like most I would love to see added features in future firmwares

-Chapter skipping on files like the 360 does, every 5 minutes or whatever
-Shutting off turning off USB drive too
-Movie Cover Thumbnails for avi's/mkv's

Overall though, I'm extremeley impressed with it...

Returned mine today. I'll continue my search for a functional media player.

Shortcomings of this one:

Limited video manipulation: need 32x or greater rev/fwd, need 1/4 & 1/2 slow modes, frame advance, 15sec skip (rev&fwd).

Wonky ISO/VOB support: need DVD menu support, or at least DVD chapter support.

Bad composite video out: I would mostly use HDMI, but would sometimes use composite. Like every 8635-based player I've tried, the WDTV has herringbone patterns on the composite out. (I did check for ground loops - others have also reported this).

There are a few more issues - such as the remote issue, but I had a problem with the remote only once in the week I used the WDTV.

So, I'm back to using the klegg medishare - which doesn't have any of the above problems but doesn't support mkv/h264. I'm hopeful that the upcoming mivx 8635-based player will also not have these problems.

Is this a true statement?

Playing a physical dvd on a dvd player that upconverts results in better picture quality than playing a ripped dvd from a media player such as the WD TV.

Would that statement be true?

aronsonstack,
Assuming that the rip to a media player is a direct 1:1 with no video conversion done while ripping, the answer to that question depends on which upconverting DVD Player/Media Player you would be using.

Assuming that both devices had the same scaling chip, they would look identical.

Both types of devices have scalers ranging from bad to awesome.

Need more information, can you specify which devices you would use?

Yes, dvd files are raw .vob files, so no compression. I guess I'm asking if the WD TV Player upconverts.

I'm not sure why there are so many whiners on this thread. Yes it is not perfect but its $99. Go and spend 2-3x as much on a popcorn hour, or 5-8x as much on a PC and spend all weekend fooling with codecs, or 5-10x as much on a dvix or other device with far more issues. Or just get a BR player and buy $30 BR discs instead of stealing movies over p2p. Or learn how to transcode the audio or video, or pull out the subtitles, on the 5% of your movies the WD HD can't play. Honestly we should take a poll here: what percent of your collection is playable on this.

The WD has only been out for 2 weeks for the love of Mary. Their product manager is here on the thread and there will be a firmware rev at some point. Finally someone has put all the other half-assed media players that cost far more and have far more issues out of business. Can't you ever be happy?

ScottWD, I have some advice for you. Don't waste time on features for the complainers, they will never be happy regardless. Is your market corner-case whiners or is it the bulk of real people. OK, listen to the videophiles here because many of us know what we're talking about, but you obviously have to prioritize. Prioritize the stuff from members here with thoughtful comments who have a high post count, and the stuff that is requested frequently.

Why not just fix the bugs before release? This way you avoid all the returns and calls to tech support. I know computers and computer files are complex things but it seems like so many things that are released these days are buggy. It's frustrating.

Hi all,

Playing with my WD for a week now (the Netherlands). Works great for this price!

Some improvements for the FW update should be (and would almost make it perfect):

- Subtitle support for .mkv files, now it doesn't play the original subs. I do lots of searching for the right .srt files;
- Support for avchd files/iso, including subs. Extracting the .m2ts stream doesn't work;
- Some .mkv 1080p/DTS files play crappy (f.e. I Am Legend 1080p) Lots of artefacts during movement. I think the bitstream 's too high for this combination;
- Support for wmvhd (vc-1) files incl subs;

Overall, superb for its price. Connected mine via HDMI to a Panasonic TX32LX70 and the sound via toslink to my receiver.

I hope WD listens to our feedback;);) Looking forward to the first Firmware opdate.

Grtz, Herb

Yes, the WD TV upconverts to 480i, 720p, or 1080p.

There is a setting in the menu for which you would like.

Yes there are complains but the product seems like it's a step in the right direction from WD.
It costs $99 and that makes it even more appealing.Since it has Sigma SMP8635LF chipset most of us know that there is a lot of potential and improvement here.
For instance i am interested watching Greek subtitles and i know from Greek forums that there are a lot of people that they are interested too.I know that WD can add this feature in a future firmware. So why not "complain" a little bit knowing that ScottWD is reading the posts?

To people who are having problems with remote... this post could maybe help you solve your issues.

I got one unit about a week ago and it worked as advertised on a 47" Philips LCD (47PFL9732).

This weekend I bought another one for my brother who had another 47" Philips but a different model (47PFL5603). When I plugged the device, the remote was acting so weirdly that we almost couldn't control the device.

I was thinking that we definitely got one of the units with a defective remote which some people were talking about.

Then, I came across a message on a French forum by a user who had exactly the same model of Philips. Even though I don't speak French, a google translation made me understood that he also had the same kind of remote problems, apparently due to Infrared signals coming from the LCD interfering with the remote. He solved it by moving the unit further away from the TV and shielding it in some way.

I tried the same by moving the unit close to the ground and even turned it backwards so that it faces the wall. And all of a sudden it started to work flawlessly and we didn't have any problems since.

If this is not specific to just one model of TV then I'm guessing that some of you guys could have a similar interference problem. You may try this solution and see if it makes a difference.

Hope that helps.

Well, I'm tired of the audio dropouts, missing frames, weak firmware support, lack of networking, lack of programs, lack of subtitle support, and features.

Oh and popcorn hour is only $100 more then then this, and fixes all those problems I mentioned.

Hi there.

I have a large collection of DVD's, including ton of cartoons and others for my kids. Since these are SD, and I would make ISO or VOB files out of them, I assume there is no issue with this device playing them. To save space, I would love to be able to have these compressed, to divix or otherwise, but it looks like ff/rev functions are somewhat limited on the device with those formats ? I never use subtitles, that's where a lot of problems people here seem to have with this device. I would also like to play music files, as this would be connected to my receiver thru digital input. Would this device easily handle my needs, this would be the first device of this sort for me. Not asking a lot, just looking for confirmation of these basic features.

Network access would be nice, but I need to be able to walk before I can run, lol !

Thanks.

Would that statement be true?

From reading around I've gathered that the best quality is to get a dvd player that does not upconvert but rather leave the dvd in its original format. Your dvd player probably does not have a better video scaler than your expensive tv. Now the upconversion of the WDTV versus the dvd player, I have no idea.

I have some iso's from dvd's I've made and the subs work nicely since they were ripped right from the disc. They look just like they do one my dvd player. Skip & Prev need to be addressed and I'm confident they will be. Playing mp3's works very nicely. You can play by album, artist, genre, shuffle, etc., and when your playing there's a pretty nice screen with all the info. I don't know if coverart is working with mp3's yet since I only tried a few?

This would be perfect for you. All my divx play find and even nero digital MP4's play fine. Iso and Dvd vobs also play fine. Music can even be playing in the background while you scroll around and choose a movie to watch, then it'll stop. With a little tweak here and there via firmware updates, the WD TV will steal a large portion of the popcorn hour and tvix buyers. Because there are people who fork over lots of money for those devices, but only use them for basic functions. This would be perfect for you!

ScottWD I vote for:

- Network support = gigabit plug + ability to mount SMB. Then Windows, Mac, linux can all serve out SMB to it.
- 24 fps output (I didn't initially notice this in the menus, does it put out 24 fps on 720p or 1080p when needed?)
- handle any subtitles inside the .mkv container

Only real competitor is Plex software on a mac mini. ScottWD check that out for ideas on UI and features. Buy one, and read their forum for inspiration. http://www.plexapp.com/

Yes, that would be the ideal world. but making a product for the video/audio world is a nightmare. there's a zillion different codecs out there. there's a zillion different ways to encode a file. even mkv is not a format. it's just a container that can have so many different things inside it.

i got mad at sony and ms for not putting more codec support out there but i see part of their viewpoint. because if you say you support something, you better be able to handle every possible scenario and that's impossible.

and then to expect these commercial companies to provide support for bootlegged encodings. i would not want to be in their position.

i'm holding off on one of these media players (wd, popcorn, etc) until they're more stable and usable. i read a lot of bad about both the popcorn and wd. people say, oh, just reencode, transcode, etc etc. i hate transcoding. would go thru nightmares transcoding for my zune, my ipod, my smartphone, etc. everything should just be drop and go. you shouldn't have to tweak a file. the only tweaking i would consider is subtitle extraction. that only takes seconds. and if the wd tv only has that major fault, i would buy it in an instant.

even on the pc, codecs can be a nightmare. my friend used to install a multicodec package to play everything. but then his hd stuff would play slow on his computer (stutter, breakups, audio problems). he found out he had to remove all his codecs and just install what he needed. so basically he can only play his hd stuff now but it plays beautifully. he doesn't get old stuff like xvid files anymore so he has less of a need to cover for old video files. more and more of the scene releases have a hi-def version anyway.

Some .mkv 1080p/DTS files play crappy (f.e. I Am Legend 1080p) Lots of artefacts during movement. I think the bitstream 's too high for this combination

Someone else suggested changing the video profile but that won't help. The video profile is just an informational tag that summarizes the encoding options that were used. Problems with 1080p movie rips are generally due to them being encoded with options that the WDTV's chip - Sigma 8635 - can't handle. WDTV can decode 1080p movies made using settings consistent with Main Profile 4.1, however many scene-release 1080p movie rips are made using High Profile 5.1 settings since it is slightly more efficient and the playback target is assumed to be a high end PC.

Use MediaInfo to check the current video profile. Also see what the number of "reframes" is - higher than 4 or 5 on a 1080p rip and it won't play on the WDTV.

So far I find about 1/3 of the 1080p rips I have tested don't work on the HDTV. Only thing to do is re-encode one of those videos if you really want to play it on the WDTV. Or download a different 1080p release and see if that works.

But for recap -

1080p MKV files it stutters a lot

Animation movies pixelate

The audio dropouts frequently during a movie, no sound

No subtitles

Tired of unhooking external drive, and rehooking it.

Needs networking support of some kind.

Can't play .WMV files, or some .ISO files

So it has shipped? So this means that you do not have one currently. You bad mouth the WD TV and say that the PCH fixes all those problems and you don't even have one yet. Haha... that's pretty funny.

The problems you list are kind of suspicious like being tired of unhooking the external hard drive. Did you know it does not house an internal hard drive when you bought it? It's more like you're trying to show people the difference between the WD and the PCH.

I'm using a Western Digital 320GB External HDD being controlled by RF from my Harmony 1000. I'm having two major issues.

I can't turn the unit on sometimes. I had to unplug the unit a few times before it would finally come on (By OEM remote provided and my RF connector). Is anyone having this same issue. (BTW where is a good place to put my rf cable on this unit? I can't find a solid spot on this unit with a consistent result of control)

And two I'm having issues of the WD hard drive connected to be recognized. It seems to have connections issues with my hard drive to be recognized. I turned off the unit and the HDD and after a few times powering on and off and switching the usb cable to slot 1 to 2 and vice versa, it finally picked it up. Very annoying especially when I not only bought the WD media streamer but also their external hard drive.
Had the same problem, but figured it out. Make sure you eject the last usb from the port on the wd tv and same for your hd when you disconnect it from the computer after download. Then make sure the wd tv hd is turned off before you connect your HD to it, then turn on the WD Tv Hd and it will recongnize it. Has worked for me. I am using a 1tb Seagate Freeagent. I have not had alot of the problems with playback and remote issues that others have been having. I have mine hdmi connected to my 65' mitsu 65736 then regular red/white audio cables to my 12yr old Sony Home Theater. The sound comes out perfect and I am watching 720p and 1080p bluray rips on it.

newegg.ca has it listed as a deactivated item? I wonder how long before we see them popping up at best buys or futreshops here in canada, i would buy online but its much easier to return to a store then an online retailer if i don't like it.

What is the point of making a post if you have not got something constructive to say. Why are you wasting your life posting rubbish when you could be doing something useful for the community like licking envelopes or windows. I don't normally care when people do this, but for some reason this seems extra childish. Go back to your kindergarten and play with your PCH.

OK, this thread has turned into a pissing match between some PH users and WD TV HD users.

If you are using a PH (or something else), I hope you enjoy it. If you have anything to bring to the table about the WD TV HD, please share. If it is just to discuss the merits of another device, please take it to a different thread so we can actually stay on topic here.

I'll give this a try. My TV is a HP LC3700N which came with a philips remote control. I do have intermittent remote powering problems. The WD TV is a foot an a half below my TV. I'll play around with the location of the WD TV and pointing the remote directy in its direction instead of the pointing it at the TV (a habit i have with remotes when the TV is on)

On a side note, I returned my Philipps 5992 DVD player a week ago and since I've had a lot less remote issues. I originally had the WD TV on top of the DVD player.

Hello All,
I've been experimenting with Handbrake on the Mac and discovered that ac3 5.1 audio in an mp4 container isn't supported. I've been able to get the ac3 audio to work in the .mkv and .avi containers, though.

Anyone else have the same experience, or discovered a workaround?

Or download a different 1080p release and see if that works.I tried changing the profile on ESIR's 1080p rip of LEgend, and unfortuantely it did'nt improve. I also tried changing the profile and converting to .m2ts quickly with TSmuxer, and it plays exactly the same way, poorly. I should mention that I did have luck changing the profile with 720p movies and them playing back nicely, but like said above, it seems to be more than just that.

The Rep posted in here 2 time so far, but didn't mention that an update was out this week. 'Soon' was mentioned which could be January or never for all we know..

i'm having a blast with this $99 toy, but would be quite surprised if they actually continued to update / support it.

We never discussed here yet another powerful source of perfectly legitimate files: TiVo DVR.
TiVo allows users to transfer recordings to their PC using TiVo Desktop or any freeware product. Recordings come as files with tivo extension and are actually mpg files wrapped in TiVo’s proprietary container. To either view them directly or to extract mpg user must enter MAK or Media Access Key unique for each TiVo.
This should be done only once, at first usage. After this, freeware application like T2Sami easily extracts mpg file and can concurrently extract srt file with subtitles. Mpg file keeps all audio settings and plays perfectly on WD TV (with external srt subtitles if needed).

To view later externally stored (original) tivo files user can transfer file back to TiVo. He/she can view file during transfer. This procedure works fairly well for SD recordings and fails for HD. TiVo input throughput is inadequate to allow concurrent viewing so user must wait for several hours until 10-20 GB file gets to TiVo completely.

WD TV alleviates this pain but only if original tivo file has been previously converted to mpg.
I own TiVo HD and use this option a lot with my WD TV.
However, remember that I need to convert each downloaded recording from tivo to mpg.

WD TV is not only for advanced users, who have access to super fast internet connection, are familiar with dark secrets of matroska and can afford powerful home computers. WD TV is also for laymen who only want to store some videos and view them later, their computers are often slow and old, they pay for their cable TV, they pay for their TiVo but that’s it. They cannot go through hassles of conversions and extractions, many of them even don’t suspect this is possible because they never heard about avsforum :)

I suggest to WD TV team to add support for tivo files. With TiVo available now in Canada and Australia this is the opportunity that should not be missed.

Maybe the posts were edited, but I looked at both of posts by ScottWD and neither mention anything of a second generation player. I'm not familiar with the inner workings of tech companies product roadmaps, but one would imagine that with their first venture into the Media Streamer game, they will likely wait a while to see how the product fares in the market prior to committing resources to the development of a second generation player.

One thing that you have to appreciate about this product, despite its few shortcomings is the fact that it's a large reputable company putting out a product that isn't designed to be handcuffed by DRM just to make a dollar in the media department (AppleTV, etc). Sure there are niche players like Popcorn Hour who have larger feature sets (as D-I-G-I-T-A-L has constantly reminded us), but to the best of my knowledge this is the first high profile company to release a product that allows customers to easily watch a variety of HD video on their home displays.

I for one hope that it inspires other companies to get into the game as competition.

Anyone else have this playing issue?

I have a few 720p and 1080p MKV's...I notice at times when I stop playback midway through the movie and then play it back again, the default screen that asks you to choose "Cancel" to start where you left off or "OK" to play from start does not play the file and says it cannot play the file and to convert the file using the packaged software (kinda the message you get when a codec is not supported).

After I get that message, it cannot play any video files...and when I shut down WDTV and restart it, it works just fine as it starts playing the file from the start (obviously it does not ask whether I wish to start from the beginning or where I left off as it seems to lose that information from its memory).

Anyone else having this issue??

Another issue I have seen on a 1080i MPEG transport stream (.ts), when I try to playback fast (2x, 4x etc.) and then press play to pick up playback where the movie is at, it jumps back to the start of the file instead of where I pressed play to resume playback.

I bought one of these yesterday to replace my extremely poor Mediagate 450HD which died on me a few weeks ago.

Overall, i'm impressed with it, especially the interface.

This is some stuff that I would like:
- Full DVD menu support for ISOs and video_ts folders (pretty standard, i'm not sure why this was left out)
- A chapters/skipping feature is really needed for skipping through long movie files. I think a combination of a user-configurable option for that (e.g. 1 min, 3 mins, 5 mins, 10, 15, etc), as well as a 'go to minute' function would be perfect
- Faster loading of slideshow pictures; it's a lot better than other devices but still pretty sluggish. Not sure if this is a limitation of the chipset though
- More slideshow options: other transitions, zooming and panning, as well as when using the list view to be able to do a slideshow spanning folders/subfolders
- The lack of internal DTS decoding on the mkvs is a bummer, but i'll figure out how to use the Popcorn Hour audio converter.

First it plays a lot of files including some undocumented ones. This includes Nero Digital. I have version 9 ultra and dvd rips look great and have the added value of being compressed. But, with storage so cheap, and recompressing so timely, and 5.1 surround not making it through even with the Nero plugin, I found that an ISO works the best for plain old DVD rips, preserves the ac3 5.1 surround audio, although I miss the chapter feature. Plus xvid, nero digital etc take a long time to rip. Iso's take about 20 minutes on my machine.

I Rip to ISO with nothing but the main movie. Copy to the hard drive. Sub-titles are fine and can be turned on or off through the WD TV HD option menu and if they are included in the rip other language sub titles will make it through. Ac3 5.1 audio makes it through to but you have to enable the Toslink by activating digital audio with the remote through "Options". Nothing in the docs mention ac3 5.1 working but it works only through ISO rips so far.

This switch in turn drops out the 2 channel analog from what I found. There is no difference in picture quality between the original and the ISO rip and the motion is smoother than with all of the other more compressed rips I tried. It gets my vote for the best way to archive DVDs on this device.

Vobs are too clunky. I also did rips to plain MPEG2, xvid, avi, etc.and also fiddled around with video bit rates etc on Nero. Too much time to get the final outcome. Iso's seem to be the best choice.

The enclosed Arcsoft Media Converter 2.5 works on one of my PC's and not the other. WD told me the softwre was corrupt. So I exchanged everything. It wasn't, it does not work my AMD machine, works fine on both of my Intels. Its nothing special and MOVAI or Nero are much better.

I can also confirm that it does not like some hard drive enclosures that you add the drive to. It will work with those plugin in IDE cable sets that lack an enclosure but they make a lot of video interference. My Maxtor one touches all work with it.

Next week I will experiment with HD.

Just received this (purchased from Dell) today. Connected to Sony 42" LCD TV using HDMI cable. Had an old 3.5" Seagate IDE HD filled with video in various formats. Plugged it in and tried playing every one of them. Here are my observations after about 4 hours of tinkering.

1. Remote works OK. It is a pretty slow when you are scrolling through files/folders in the list view. Lack of pageup/pagedown buttons are a pain.
2. Played xvid and divx encoded avi files, vob files, x26f mkv files just fine.
3. Played 720p and 1080p h264 MKV files as well regardless of whether the profile was High@L4.1 or High@L5.1. The only ones with blocky video were the ones that had high Ref Frames (10, 12, 16). Others with up to 6 Ref Frames played just fine even with a profile of High@L5.1.
4. I don't have a receiver and so it's up to the TV to handle the audio. My TV only plays PCM streams - anything with AC3 or mp3 audio plays fine. I had a few vob files with MPEG-1 Audio layer 2 audio streams and these don't play - the video plays but, with a "No audio source" message. Am guessing this is my TV's shortcoming.
5. The on-screen user interface is pretty nice - simple, yet functional.

Improvements that I really need via a firmware update (not in a new model!):
1. Subtitle support - This is a must have. The ability to play sub/idx files as well as subs within mkv containers.
2. Every time I turn on the WD TV, it defaults to the PictureViewer mode - I'd like to be able to aways default to Videos and to the last folder played, or, at least, the root folder when there is a single usb drive attached. Too many clicks required now.
3. A way to turn off the hard drive when WD TV is switched off.
4. PageUp, PageDown buttons on the remote (this is obviously not a firmware upgrade and should probably wait until the next model).
5. Retain bookmarks even if the hard drive is unplugged from WDTV. Since it writes to the hard drive now, shouldn't be hard to save the bookmark information to the hard drive and read from it later.
6. The ability to use DVD Menus when ripped DVDs are on the srive with full Video_ts folders.
7. Audio - decode DTS and MPEG-1 Audio layer 2 audio.
8. Use Chapters defined within mkvs for skipping/rewinding.
9. Better fast-forward, rewind control.

So far, it looks like a keeper. I just hope WD doesn't abandon us early adopters and release all the fixes in a new model. Looking forward to a firmware update that fixes these issues and makes this a killer device!

So I got this player recently, here are a few of my observations.

It upconverts on all video, even if I change the video output to 720P,
which causes way too much sharpening on my 720p MKV's, in fact HD video played directly from my computer looks much better than when played on WDTV. I'm kinda surprised no one bought this up before.

On the flip side DVD ISO's shows much better when played on WDTV. The upconversion sharpens em up. ISO's played on my computer are very blurry
in comparison.

This upconversion also seems to take place when photos are being displayed.

It would be nice if upcoversion only took place on SD video.

It would not play my .mov files, would not play digital audio from some files, and subtitle support needs to be better.

Yeah I found this curious too, mine wouldn't play either, and they were just simple .mov files from my digital camera.

I've had some interesting Divx's issue with converted Karaoke. When converted to 29 frames, the audio is out of sync with the video, yet these files play fine from a burned DVD through my Phillips DVD player. If I re-convert them to 25 frames, it's in sync.

Don't know what causes this as standard Divx files I have such as movies stay in sync at 29 frames.

I have recorded mostly HD PVR h264 1080i dolby 5.1 files using Beyond TV Beta 4.9 and edit with H264TS_Cutter. I have about 40 6gb to 10gb of these on the WD TV. I used orginal Arcsoft's HD PVR softwate to archive 2 of my HD DVD in 1080i 2 channel stereo. File size again was about 8 or 9gb. I also have used version 4.8.2 of BTV for OTA 1080i and 720p for mpeg2 ts files. I edited this files with VideoRedo and saved them as mpg. I have a couple of these out there for test purposes. Lastly, from my Comcast STB I used firewire to capture 1080i mpeg2 files of 16gb to 20gb. I used VideoRedo to edit these also. I also have one 8gb DVD with 1 VOB files renamed to mpg.

I have had your same issue about 4 times in the last 2 days. It seems like it happens after I play the 20gb firewire and pause it. Have to try to get it to consistently to behave this way as to isolate the problem. I use the menu to reset the system. I then reset library to off and files to list. All resume points are lost plus the box resyncs the usb drive.

Below the quote:

"According to an email exchange from Scott at Western Digital, a new firmware will be coming up soon which will correct the following issues. This isn't a confirmed list but they are testing the functions

*USB power-down when WDTV HD is shut off (High Priority)
*Fixed remote issues, ie. Not being able to turn the unit on or off
*VobSub subtitle support (planned but may not be included with this release)
*Go-To Function

He said these are the major fixes and there will be many many small bug fixes. He also mentioned there are many more planned features and fixes but since the WDTV HD has only been out for 3 weeks, they don't want to release updates without proper testing. He said that power management is at the top of their list, didn't mention what this would include other than USB power down.

Anyways, expect the first firmware update very soon!"

If it's for real you can conclude WD is trying to make this a succes

What you are doing is mentioning a media player that You believe to be a better device. It may be true that the majority of people on this forum have an above average knowledge of tech devices, but it would appear that you're making the assumption that WD is marketing this device at them alone.

There is a whole untapped market of people who don't know what a NAS device is or how it works. There are people who's ethernet cable running from their modem, actually goes into their computer and not a router with 5 other devices connected. There are people who don't leave their computer running 24/7 so that they have access to the 5 TB dubbed Anime stored on their computer in the basement. Maybe WD is putting a fairly simple product on the shelves at BestBuy so that these people have an option.

What about when its OFF?

I was curious about this, too. My Kill-a-Watt indicates 6 - 7 watts are pulled when it's on and decoding, and -- surprisingly -- it's using 5 watts when "off." That seems needlessly wasteful. Perhaps WD did this to reduce power-on time by having the embedded OS already booted up but in standby mode. I'll have to test this theory by plugging the device in and turning it on immediately to see if there's any more delay than normal.

I too have many .mov files, after converting them to .avi with the included
ArcSoft program they played very nicely on the WDTV.
The ArcSoft will allow you to do batch conversions so it was pretty easy.

Yeah, I figured I'd have to convert it, but since it say it supports .mov files I'd just give it a shot. Must be the type of .mov my camera creates as clicke mentioned playing .mov's trailers form the apple site works fine.

Don't all devices with ir need power when idling? 5 watts sounds like one portable hard drive staying on. If you connect 2, will it still stay a 5 watts when off?

In the Audio/Video Options menu, I think you can set it to either "stereo" or "digital". If it's on Stereo, you may have to change it to Digital. I'm not at my WDTV right now, so I'm saying this from memory.

Has anybody tried connecting a USB NAS device to WD TV?
<...>
If anybody has a NAS can you please test it with the WD TV and post here. Thanks.

Does such thing (USB NAS) exist? I don't think so... I would love to have both network- and directly- attached storage combined in a single solution, but as far as I know there is no such thing on the market today.

Except for:
- NDAS solutions (this is a Ximeta TM, you have to install drivers on the host machines and it is visible as a 'local' drive then. Obviously won't work with WD as you can't install drivers there)

- Buffalo DriveStation FlexNet (again, only Windows support, have to be 'switched' to work either with USB or Ethernet)

So nothing applicable to WD TV

What about the first few in this list (http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=usb+nas&x=0&y=0)?

In reality though, I want an enclosure that has both USB and a wireless network connectivity. Can't find anything like that for less than $100 - which happens to be my budget for now.

Edited to add... this is a better list of USB NAS products (http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010090092+1054213783&Configurator=&Subcategory=92&description=&Ntk=&SpeTabStoreType=&srchInDesc=).

MediocreFred, these are all USB-hosts, not USB-targets, i.e. you can expand their storage by attaching an external USB drive, not access their storage via USB

OK, I've been working on this solution on and off for the last few days looking for ways to connect the WD TV to NAS device that provides a USB port that is not just a drive expansion function of the NAS, but also has a USB port that you connect to a PC and access media files just like any other USB drive.

According to the specs of the LaCie Ethernet Disk Mini Network Storage Server - 301369U this unit has two USB ports. One for expansion and one for PC connection which would be considered a target device.

I plan to call LaCie tomorrow and confirm this. However the Docs mention the install of a driver on the PC but that doesn't necessarily mean that the WD TV won't recognize it as a target device.

This all getting very interesting and we will need to be creative if we want this cool little unit attached to our networks.

Both play smoothly. I get a msg on screen saying "no audio track" on both files. Each file is only about 4 seconds long and they both seem to display in full HD.

Anyone ever seen some kind of USB device with wireless or wired LAN that can detect network hard drives and present them to the WD HD in the form of a "virtual" USB hard drive.

If a little box like this existed, kind of a SMB to USB bridge, it would graft network onto the WD HD. I guess WD wants to sell external USB drives, but hey, this would let them sell internal drives at least.

I'm not trashing the WD so don't get all upset, but if you're going to spend $200 to network it, why not spend another $100 on the Popcorn Hour instead, then take that second $100 and buy a 1 TB hd? Then you wouldn't have to jump thru these hoops to network your media box. Just a suggestion.

Nothing to get upset here at all. The WD device has been kind for all the functionality that I require it to have. Spent $75 on it through Amazon (had remaining credit on account) and was done. Don't laugh but I don't have a home theater receiver so when I tried playing a blu-ray rip with DTS, I got no audio from those files. This was with the WD HD Media plugged into my HDMI port on my new Samsung 52" LCD (630 series). Is this simply because the tv cannot handle DTS and there was no other audio track on the file? I do know that I had the WD's audio settings set to "stereo" and not "digital" yet no sound came. I am curious to know what would happen if I kept the HDMI for video to my tv and simply used regular audio (composite? the red/white ones) from the WD to my TV. I seriously need a receiver!

Review from amazon.com (model LS-L500GL):

----------------------
Easy to set up but sloooooooow!, September 16, 2008

It was easy to set up NAS hard drive to keep my itunes. However from practical standpoint this harddrive is too slow for wireless as well as ethernet connected computers to access my music. For example to add new cd to my itunes it would take a good 50% longer than it used to take to update my files when it used to be on 250G Buffalo USB 2.0 external hard drive. When editing metadata on my itunes, it takes a good 5 seconds to update each entry after the next button is pressed (this is something that used to take less than 1 second).

Also playing video files on my itunes is a hassle since the video stutters due to slow speed of the drive. It seems like read speed is actually slower than its write speed. I am moving my files back to my external hard drive, and maybe i'll just setup my old dell notebook as a defacto server instead of having to deal with the slow speed of the Buffalo Linkstation EZ. It maybe a good document server, but as a media server this drive fails miserably."
-----------------------------

Review from newegg (model HS-DH500GL)

------------------------------

Cons: Exceptionally slow (i mean really slow) - has to run overnight to back up MBP with Leopard/Time Machine. If I were you use a hub/router that has a USB 2 port and buy a faster USB drive if you need the speed.

-----------------------------

Looks as all these NAS+USB hybrid enclosures are very slow when accessed over network. Too bad for moving around HD data.

A good question. I own both WD TV and iStar (which is like Popcorn only that the drive is external, like with WD TV). iStar doesn't play some of what WD plays (though there are the other way around examples as well), it might also be design/interface/support concerns. Also, do you really want to have your data go thru the slow Popcorn to reach the drive? Think about it... I'd prefer an external solution

OK I'm not going to feed the trolls on the Popcorn Hour payroll. That guy is a living example of why we need an I-G-N-O-R-E button on this forum.

Was thinking that WD is in a good position to see what media people really want to play. If they just sample the drives people return to them under warranty I bet they are loaded with movies.

AFAIK the only alternatives are to spend 2-3x as much for PH (but it has many issues which they've been trying to fix for 2-3 years) or 5x as much for a mac mini running Plex. Or run your own HTPC but then its up to you to solve any and all playback and codec problems.

That said its almost impossible to play everything everywhere automatically. If you really need that then just buy or rent real DVDs or BRs.

Yea that sucks haha. However, I am awaiting final confirmation from Buffalo Tech's direct support. I found 2 knowledge base articles about the DriveStation devices that indicate it can be setup for NTFS with having both NETWORK and USB work. However, the latest article indicates that the FlexNet can be formatted, but does not specify to NTFS.

Hi all,

I'm wondering if people are having issues with the ff/rewind when playing VOB/iso files. Everytime i try to use those functions and press play I end up in some random spot in the movie. I'm using mactheripper; could its output files be the problem or is wdtv the problem? All the rips work fine on computer and burned dvds. so i'm hoping the firmware update will fix this issue but is anyone else having the same problem?

Additionally on several rips frames are being dropped every couple minutes. Someone else mentioned this for an iso file and said in VOB it worked fine but I have the same problem regardless. Any help appreciated.

Just got our unit for evaluation. We have a strange video artifact, horizontal pin width lines bleeding from light areas to dark. We're running HDMI to a DVDO VP-50pro to an INFocus IN-82 projector. This is even occurring on the WD Menu. Also running VOB file with either HDMI or Toslink we seem to get stereo only coded up to DPL II by the processor instead of DD. We have the audio setting on digital. Any answers. Thanks, Norm

i've been waiting for something like this, didn't know it existed!

I like that it has a simple remote - and seems simple to use. Only thing holding me back from buying one is that it does not seem to support thumbnails for video files. I don't even have itunes or a lot of mp4 files and even if i did have both of those i'm still not sure the thumbnails would work...

With working thumbnails it would be more family friendly. If the only thing the interface can display is the filename "h.264 720p movie.title [release group] 24fps . mkv" its not slick looking and the name may even be cut off because it is too long.

thing looks cool though, very tempting, but i think i'll be able to hold off - for now

Sorry to ruin the fun :-( but this has been posted on forums.buffalotech.com by forum moderator (I just corrected typo):

"the unit has to be in FAT to keep dual functions"

That means 4 GB cap on file size... not much of revolution in this marriage...

That most cost 2x more then popcorn hour. :D

hi all, does anybody know who can I personally ask for support for polish language ?Just convert you subtitles to UTF-8.

Unfortunatelly simple converting to .srt with Unicode encoding (UTF-8) won't work because WD TV's system and subtitle font doesn't include polish diacritical marks (ą, ć, ę, ł, ń, ó, ś, ź, ż). Here's proof - jablecznik.com/Przez_szklo_widziane/Galerie/Pages/WD_TV_Media_Player.html#20 (I'm sorry but I don't have 3 post and I can't post clickable links). Subtitles in this picture should look like this:

/Zaczynam się martwić,
/że nie dostałeś naszych wiadomości.

I don't think that is a big problem for WD developers (ScottWD, I'm talking to you :-)) - all they need to do is to swap current font with one that supports central european languages.

Please WD, do this and make me and many others your new happy customers :-)

Here is the Popcorn Hour thread http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1060708 It seems a lot less popular. It also has some issues. I think this WD TV could put Popcorn Hour out of business, at which point there would be no more firmware updates...

Is there a thread for Plex here? http://www.plexapp.com/ A mac mini costs $500 refurbished, but it is a very powerful solution and of course does a lot more than show media.

Ok, so I'm not a total Noob I know a little about this... so i got this thing 2day from BB, here's what i've found so far:

Plays Most HD 720p MKV files back flawlessly @ 60fps
Does a good job of upconverting SD to HD.

Issues:

any mkv file I play that has AAC HE audio codec does not play audio
any mkv that has a resolution such as:
960x544
852x720

Forces a 4:3 aspect ratio, or distorts letterbox to fit 16:9.

Also some of my 1080p files are really choppy, others not so much.

anyone else having these issues, is this something that can be addressed within the relm of firmware updates? If these isues can't be fixed with firmware updates i'm gonna have to take the unit back to BB.

I got this as a stand in until i can get my Popcorn Hour a-110, and as my HD on the road companion. so if it can't fix these issues idk about keeping it, i mean i know what it handles well now and can get that from now on, but that doesn't help me with all the content I have already that is not playing correctly.

About price: At buy.com and amazon.com price is $300+.
At $167 this item could be refurbished.
Check here (http://www.resellerratings.com/store/eCost)

About usb: Looks as usb ports are for usb printers or expansion drives only.

Review posted on amazon.com clarifies a lot:

"While it usually works OK for small and moderate sized files (<30 mb) it is much slower than I had thought it would be. It never works for the big files I have to push around (~500 mb), it just can't seem to get to the end of the file before crashing. Supposedly it can run over a USB cable as well as over the network, but I have not been able to get this to work (after going to 3 stores to find a simple USBA-USBA cable). The additional USB drive that you can attach to it must be FAT 32 formatted and completely empty, so no reusing my other Mac formatted and partially full hard drives, another big disappointment"

WD would be wise, given the apparent popularity of the WD TV, to offer a NAS/USB or Firewire or SATA combo drive that would work. It sure would make life easier to be able to not only update files on the connected drive, but have them available to share with the rest of the home network!

IMHO yes, it is urgent! And no jokes here. WD TV supports Unicode so all that WD developers have to do is to include proper fonts and it's neither complicated nor expensive (correct me if I'm wrong).

Audio......... MP3 48000Hz 112 kb/s CBR (2 chnls)
Language...... English
Video......... 629 kbps XviD 23.976 FPS
Q. Frame...... 0.157 bits*pixel
Resolution.... 644 x 260
DAR........... 2.477 (52:21)
Subs.......... None
Size.......... 801 MB
Source........ DVD

I tried using the Arcsoft converter but it screwed up all the audio sync :( I was wondering if anyone had suggestions as to how I can get this to play in the WDTV (I uninstalled the Arcsoft stuff cuz it seemed kinda intrusive and annoying... oh and it didn't work for anything I tried so I figured it sucked).

Thanks

So far so good with my unit. I've thrown over 20 mkv HD movies at it and they all played just fine. Some have DD and some have DTS audio. Most are 720p but some are 1080p. I've connected the unit to my Onkyo 805 receiver via HDMI and then it sends the video to the TV. I'm very happy with it so far, great product!

i've been waiting for something like this, didn't know it existed!

You can use folders, or change the names of the files to be more friendly, like "Batman HD" or something instead of Batman.720p.x264.mkv. I keep the names simple, and have an SD, HD, & TV Show folder. For me thumbnails would just be to make it look nicer

The native resolution of my set is 1366x768, so I assumed I should set the WD TV to 720p. Viewing photos (2592x1456) in this mode results in distorted images, with jaggies on diagonal lines. The jaggies mostly go away when I change the WD TV mode to 1080i or 1080p. When viewing videos, I haven't noticed much difference between the two modes (720p and 1080i) so far.

Also, when I plug a flash card reader to the WD TV, I get an "Unrecognized USB device message", but I guess this shouldn't be unexpected since I've seen other notes on this thread that hubs aren't allowed.

It looks like Auto mode reads the resolution of the display and changes the WD TV's setting to match. If I change the resolution to 1080i, Auto mode sets it back to 720p.

- Plays DVD ISO files the same way. No menus.
- Does NOT play extracted VIDEO_TS folder either. Only displays VOB files for playing.
- Does display DVD subtitles. Select text icon at top after hitting Options button. (Small consolation)
- Only plays DVD subs and external SRT subs for other supported video types.
- Does NOT play DTS audio. My test MKV w/DTS track played the AVC video without audio.
- No VC-1 hi-def codec support
- 16x forwarding sucks as well, very slow

I tried changing the profile on ESIR's 1080p rip of LEgend, and unfortuantely it did'nt improve. I also tried changing the profile and converting to .m2ts quickly with TSmuxer, and it plays exactly the same way, poorly. I should mention that I did have luck changing the profile with 720p movies and them playing back nicely, but like said above, it seems to be more than just that.

I think it is a really good unit for firmware V1.0

Mine is connected to a Sony 46V TV via hdmi
from there it goes to our older JVC receiver via optical. No hdmi on the receiver. A my book 500 for storage.

I have thrown dozens of 720p vidoes at the WD with no issues. But all of my 1080p would garbage up.
Did a defrag on the drive and it helped.

Now the only two issues I am seeing on some 1080P videos with DTS the audio drops out randomly not seen that on any other DTS sources with the receiver. The other issue is fansub anime being very choppy.
Still playing with MKVmerge to see if it is a sub problem.

I dont know if this is a HDMI issue or the issue of my WDTV but i have a 20ft hdmi cable and run it to my projector at 1920x1080 at 60hz and it works just fine, when i add an additional 6 feet with an extraction to reach my tv stand it. It works for a little while then the video shuts down the audio is still going but the video cuts out, does this mean the hdmi single is weak and is not making it to my projector? or is the wd tv not sending out a strong signal.

After a week of testing various files, the WD device has an obvious problem playing back 1080P MKV files. Stuttering and blocking with 4 different 1080P MKV's. All The 720P MKV's are fine.

has anyone successfully played backed 1080P MKV's with no issues?

I have a PCH A-110 arriving this week to compare. I was hoping the WD would be a great portable device for bringing over friends houses, etc. but they definately have to get this device patched up to properly play 1080P content.

With only 2 posts from the WD rep, I have a feeling this will be an abandoned ship as is so common with one off CE devices.

If it really is a matter of picture height times width times reframes...

For the 2.35:1 mkv movies that are unfortunately encoded at 1920x1080 with unnecessary black bars at 5 or more reframes (L5.1), is there a simple software that can just chop off the black bars and do a "quick" reencode?

I got noticeable blocking with 1080p files on my TV in the front room (JVC 56" HD-ILA 1080p), then moved it to my game room TV which is a Sony 50" SXRD 1080p. The settings on the unit on both TV's were set to 1080p 60hz. I have no idea why it blocks on my JVC, but I did have problems with it when I was running my computer on the JVC with a DVI > HDMI adapter, and running 18xx X 9xx resolution @ 60hz. The problems were less intermittent, but still noticeable even as low as 30hz with my computer when hooked up to the JVC. Point being, it could be your TV.

Are you saying that your blocky 1080p file playback disappeared when plugging via HDMI directly into a newer TV?

Maybe if your tv is 1080p@24hz compatible it fixes the problem? I've only tested the WD player on 1680x1050 computer monitors which only support 60Hz refresh, and i get all kinds of blocking on 1920x1040/1080 1080p files with 5 or 6 reframes. maybe forcing the WD to output 24Hz instead of 60Hz will be easier on the processor and eliminate the blocking? most people nowadays use 24Hz capable displays anyway..well at least serious home theater enthousiasts do.

Oh and one more note to ScottWD: You should add a 16:10 aspect ratio selection for the multitudes of people using this with computer monitors. Otherwise we have to live with either ovalheads ("Widescreen" setting) or fatheads ("Normal" setting)

Very cool unit but it wont be a substitute for a HTPC. It will never have the flexability to deal with all the subtle encoding methods but for people on a budget this gives them a great deal of power for a small bit of cash. Thanks for the all the good info, it was good reading, maybe when this drops down to below $90 or so I might buy one for my bedroom TV.

BTW ignore the troll, some peope expect way too much. This unit costs less than my video card and yet it does so much. If I did not already have an HTPC I would be really tempted by this.

Dysan911

Very cool unit but it wont be a substitute for a HTPC. It will never have the flexability to deal with all the subtle encoding methods but for people on a budget this gives them a great deal of power for a small bit of cash. Thanks for the all the good info, it was good reading, maybe when this drops down to below $90 or so I might buy one for my bedroom TV.

BTW ignore the troll, some peope expect way too much. This unit costs less than my video card and yet it does so much. If I did not already have an HTPC I would be really tempted by this.

Try "super" converter. It will take in a wmv and convert it to mkv/H264 or avi/divx and it's free:

Maybe if your tv is 1080p@24hz compatible it fixes the problem? I've only tested the WD player on 1680x1050 computer monitors which only support 60Hz refresh, and i get all kinds of blocking on 1920x1040/1080 1080p files with 5 or 6 reframes. maybe forcing the WD to output 24Hz instead of 60Hz will be easier on the processor and eliminate the blocking? most people nowadays use 24Hz capable displays anyway..well at least serious home theater enthousiasts do.

This 24 fps angle is worth investigating. As we know, film, BR, and BR rips are generally 24 fps. Perhaps not forcing the chip to create extra frames and fields (or does it telecine...) to get up to 60 full or interlaced fps will keep the WD TV happy.

That said the current firmware doesn't have a setting for 24 fps. It just has AUTO. I'll move it into the projector room, jack it in, and report what happens.

I purchased this player today at BB,all my xvid .avi files play perfectly.
But when i go to play some 720p .mkv files the video is perfect but I am not getting any sound.
I have the player hooked up to a sony bravia via hdmi,i also tried adding the white/red plugs for audio but thats not giving me any sound either.
I changed the audio settings on the WD Player between digital and stereo to no avail.
In looking at the 720p movies the audio is DTS.
Do I need to get 720p/1080p movies that do not have DTS audio or is there something I can do to fix the problem.
Thanks

Took mine back 5 days after buying it. I didn't like the quality of the HDMI to my lcd or my lcd projector, to dark.
Also I didn't like unhooking to copy things to the usb drive.
The FF and RW was another reason for the return.
I ordered a popcorn which is what I really wanted but just wanted to give the WD HD TV a chance.

Everything did play but if you stop and start movies alot as I was trying to see how they play seemed to confuse it and had to unplug it.

It's already an abandoned ship, and 1080p playback sucks on this thing your right. It's only good on 720p mkvs.

The WD TV only has internal decoders for mono, stereo, or AC3/Dolby Digital.
Anything higher than that requires you to run an optical cable to a reciever with the required decoders built in.
Alternatively, you can run the hdmi directly to said reciever, as long as it has an hdmi out to run to your TV.

OK, I hooked up the WD TV to the PJ. It generally plays 1080p, but I definitely get blocking, like small or large squares of confetti, on most of the 1080p material I fed it (.mkv rips from private trackers). For my purpose however, cartoons in 720p or avi on the LCD in the kids TV room, I've had no issues to speak of.

While setting the WD TV to Auto shows a lot more options on my PJ than on my LCD, none of them are 24 fps. I am using this 1TB drive http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822101121
Inside this high quality external USB case is a Western Digital WD10EACS. I am not sure if or how to have the WD TV put out 24p.

The only issue I have is a few movies I have are HD-DVD rips in a WMV format and they will not play. I CANNOT get any suggestions from anyone in this thread as to if it's possible to convert it to a WD compatible format.

This does not help with your WMV format but is an additional method for getting HD-DVDs on the WD TV usb drives. It should also work to get your Blu-Ray disks into a format that the WD TV can use. I know straight rips would be better but the playback requirements and file size for the WD TV would be less with this technique.

The Hauppauge HD PVR is a great device for working with WD TV. Link here:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1015617

It converts component analog HD and fibre Dolby Digital or RCA Stereo to h264 ts files. When you rename them to m2ts they play back perfectly on the WD TV's hmdi to your HDTV. You can also use the WD TV composite rca/fibre to play them back in letterbox on an 4:3 SD TV at dvd or better quality. I usually use the HD PVR with my cable Motorola STB to record all my HD shows to my HTPC. I have also hooked up my Toshiba A2 HD DVD player as input to backup my HD DVDs. The default setting for the HD PVR allows me to fit a 2hr HD movie on a DL DVD in AVCHD (a Blu-ray compatible format). I record this as 1080i Dolby Digital as that is the highest format allowed by the HD PVR. Now with the WD TV I have increased the MPEG4 to the HD PVR max rate of 13.5 and skip the making of a Blu-Ray DL DVD. The 2hr movie files are now 12GB but better quality. The original WD TV playback of the default HD PVR 8GB m2ts files looked very good on SD and my 1366 by 768 HDTVs. People's faces in the default 8GB files looked a little soft on my friends Sony XBR 4 1920 by 1080p 120 mhz 24 fps set. Can not wait to see how they higher rate recordings will look on his set. Trying to future proof my WD TV recordings for a 1080p set down the road.

That's a good description of what i'm seeing. it does play the 1080P MKV's, but there is noticable blocking throughout the image.

The sigma chip is the same as the other NMT's, they should be able to fix that in a software update. I'll hold onto it for a little while to see if WD fixes it soon.

I searched this thread but couldn't find anything.

Is there any way to hook up an external dvd or blu ray drive via usb to the WD TV HD and have it read the discs? If not, I wonder if that's a feature that could be easily implemented into the software...

I personally have most my movies on disc and have been slowly putting them on my external hdd specifically to use with the WD TV HD but it'd be really really nice to just play the discs directly...

Ahsan, I have got a Samsung le32r88 that has got something called SRSTrusurround, and it says on the srs website website "Trusurround HD accepts any input source up to a seven channel (6.1) and renders sounds from 2.0 - 3.1 speaker configurations" I assume this means it will accept dts or surround sound and them use the 3 inbuilt speakers to mimic surround sound. Has your Samsung got this feature built in? although saying that, I don't know for certain whether it will work with I am just hoping it will.
I haven't even got my WD TV yet, I ordered it a couple of weeks ago but there seems to be some delay in sending them to the UK, have had the delivery date changed a couple of times now, the latest is that it will be in stock on the 27th November.

I had a few WMV-HD's that were "WMV 9 Advanced Profile" too. I did'nt realize that was different than "WMV 9." I converted a few samples from those to WMV9 (which the box states are compliant) and there now working fine. Looking at your info on your .WMV on the last page thats why its not playing...

How do you get the movie to continue to play the next VOB file? I use DVD shrink and usually have 3 - 5 files in the Video_TS folder. Was just watching a movie and it wouldn't go to the next file nor would it play it after I selected it.

Any help advice would be appreciated.

DVDshrink can make an .iso right. That might make it easier to view on the WDTV, so you don't have to worry switching folder to folder.

Thats a cool setup aronsonstack!. I know a lot of people are turned off by the fact that this WD Media Player does not have network capabilities but I'm not quite sure I understand what the big deal is..

Granted I know I'm speaking on my own behalf but personally my complete movie library is spread over several external HD's. There is no way I can avoid the unplug/plug swap game. Even if the WD had a network jack and it could browse my File Shares.. I do not keep all of my external drives on and running.. Maybe just 2 at the most..

My setup at home is like this:

I download or rip my flicks to a folder on my local HD. Once it's ready to view I copy it over to a local external USB HD (much faster than copying across the lan to a SAN I might add). I bought a few of the same type of Ext Drive cases so I have the exact same power plug setup sitting next to the WD Media Player, & the other setup at my PC. This way I don't have to drag the AC plugs back and forth..

Streaming would be a slight convenience but again I would have to swap a drive depending on what you wanted to watch and what drive it was on, granted it would be at the PC side but none of that makes it easy for my family to figure out compared to just plugging in an Ext Drive and using the basic WD Menus.

Thats just me though..

Hi!

I've been reading this thread since it started and it's been so interesting, fun and educational that i decided to become a member.

I have to say i have great hopes on this little piece of hardware, since i'm an iStar owner who sadly got the version 1.1 just before it became disscontinued, and learnt it didn't decode DTS either, just as many report on the WD TV HD, and just like the PCH was just before the a-110 version got it's last firmware. It was very dissapointing, mostly because i came to another forum asking for information about it and received a harsh treatment.

My iStar does a great job most of the time, but it's not perfect, just the same as the PCH and many other players including the WD TV HD; what's the difference then? My iStar cost me 200 bucks and i'm not using any network functions, so i paid for something i don't use and will never use, i will rather prefer to have all my HD collection on DVDR-DL media(the ones that fit, of course) than having a NAS server with untrustable HDD's wich by it's nature can and will fail some day, contrary to the DVD's which may last a lifetime if cared properly.

So, a 100 bucks less for something almost the same i have now it's a great deal, cause just a month ago the iStar and all other PCH based players had the same issues addressed here for the WD TV HD: Bad aspect ratios on most movies when zooming, missing character fonts, lack of DTS decoding (yes, not even the A-110 had it a month ago), many MKV, AVI and many others didn't play at all, and they still have issues on some audio codecs, bad subtitle rendering, unsupported subtitles in sub/idx form, hangs in many different ways so bad that it needs to be power cycled. The PCH family doesn't play everythig you throw at it like some try to make the people think, i have a collection of more than 200 HD movies and i can assure you, it doesn't play everything. I don't think i have to mention a month ago it played a lot less media than now.

But now they are ahead of the WD TV HD, many things have been fixed, or been tried to be fixed, some succesfully(true zoom instead of stretching, many audio codecs, many video codecs), some unsuccesfully(subtitles, DTS decoding, some audio codecs, some video codecs, full DVD backups support, etc), so the thing here really is: if any, how often the WD TV HD firmware updates will be? Will they be adding some new functions like external DVD and Blu-Ray units support? Will they extend the list of supported external enclousures? Or will they limit to bug correction?

By the way i had to buy a home theatre to enjoy my movies with DTS audio cause i don't want to transcode anything, many of you will have to do so if WD doesn't pay for a DTS license and don't want to loss quality or struggle with conversions.

I like my iStar a lot just like many people sure likes their PCH or HDX, or Kaiboer or TiVix, or whatever, but if there's something that does the same job without the networking functions, the same including the bugs and everything, and costs 100 less with the same or better (haha) firmware updating, i will definately buy it and recommend it. I hope the WD TV HD is the one. Yes i'm a cinephile :D

Thanks!

I'm looking forward to see how quickly they release a firmware update and read the comments about it's functionality, i will not make the same mistake as with the iStar, stupidly hoping an update will bring DTS decoding and then being mistrated by some PCH paid reviewers about it.

What I'm learning as I get deeper into home theater is what a waste it is to watch a good movie on a TV set. There's a reason half the data on a BR is audio. There's a reason people spend more on the audio system than on the projector. And rips will never be small if they include the full TrueHD or DTS-ma soundtrack. There's a reason for your projector room to just use full BluRay discs. And its easier to rent them than download them. And IMHO not all that many movies are worth owning or seeing twice, and for those I can buy the BR.

But there is still room for a second TV room for the kids showing downloaded 720p mkv rips on an LCD display. And powered by the WD TV. Or, an option not enough people are talking about, plex on a mac mini, free software, $500 (refurbished) hardware. www.plexapp.com I bet that does your DTS.

your not alone - many of us registered because of this lower priced hd player

to be sure - if i have 720p mkvs with dts (dts seems to be common in mkv files) and i hook up the wd tv to my 720p samsung lcd tv with hdmi, i will get no sound? I am just using the tv speakers because i cannot put a loud system in the room

if this is true my options are:
buy a receiver - i guess around ~$500?
buy a box with dts support (ph) ~$215
remake the mkv with re-encoded audio using this tool - ~free

w w w.networkedmediatank.com/wiki/index.php/Convert_DTS_to_AC3

i guess i will try the free way if this is all correct. Anyone tried converting the audio? How long does it take? How painful is it? Does WD TV box succesfully play the audio afterwards? Hopefully the audio is still in sync after its all done?

and 1.080 mkv scene movies, any problem playing this files?

with the current firmware, it has issues playing back several 1080P mkv's. They do play, but get small blocking throughout the image and occassional stuttering.

They have to fix this in a firmware update, otherwise it's a bit of a dealbreaker even for the low cost of the device. I don't want to restrict playback to 720P mkv's when the other NMT's play 1080P files without these issues.

Same issue on my player. Blocking and stuttering (also folder graphic, eastern europe subtitles support urgently needed).
Realy looking forward for firmware update.
ScottWD can you give as estimated date when update will be relased?

Thank You for Great Product!!!

Why is everyone convinced that ScottWD actually has anything to do with Western Digital? He came on made 2 posts and vanished...starting to question it myself....

I thought this myself, even at the time he made the post. But I didn't want to be the first one to question whether he was who he claimed to be.

Actually Scott made a total of about (9) post and they were removed ... who knows why? ... probably because his superiors wanted a leash on things. But there was conversations about a 2nd general WD player.

I'm waiting for a firmware update or the tentative 2nd generation player to come out before I get off the fence. If neither of these comes out I'll be joining the PCH club.

Just the fact that the unit is small it can envision this device being implemented directly into future TVs and Monitor panel so one can plug their externals directly into their TV. If Western Digital doesn't pursuit this some one will and make a deal will the TV manufacturers.

he said he was from western digital over at the apple forums and thanked them for their feedback. He also stated that they were very excited about how popular their little box has become in such a short time

Hi ! Greetings from Argentina !

I´m using this tiny device hooked to a My book essential 500GB drive.
I noticed it takes 2-3 minutes to start scanning the usb drive contents.
I wan´t to know if this behavior is normal.

Thank you

And to keep it popular they should soon come out with a firmware.
But hey, it is only out here for a month. Better a full upgrade than small ones. Only we dont know if they are working on it.
Don't think a second generation soon will come.

I will admit this thing did convince me on how much I would use something like this. So in that case I actually ordered a PCH A110. Having an Onkyo 606 I would like something that does do TrueHD and DTS-MA. No fears this is going to my father who loves to watch divx files so this will be perfect for him.

I'm going to try this movie on mine, I wonder if it's because it's the "2 in 1" version? (it has both endings encoded....)

I'll let you know how it goes on my unit.

I had the same trouble with my unit. I might try to re-encode it at some point...

I posted this earlier, but if you dont have a receiver and your files are dts encoded. Download popcorn mkv audio converter. It will reencode the DTS to ac3 without touching the video. Takes about 5 minutes for me with a core 2 duo.

how much do you have to pay for newsgroups and what service do you use? torrents are free but you have to maintain a ratio so yeah, that can be painful especially since the upload and download speeds are not equivalent.

Also everything is usually uploaded to Rapidshare and similiar type sites. I use Megashares since there no daily limits, files rarely get deleted, and its cheap.

i guess i will try the free way if this is all correct. Anyone tried converting the audio? How long does it take? How painful is it? Does WD TV box succesfully play the audio afterwards? Hopefully the audio is still in sync after its all done?

Super quick, easy, and like said above it takes only a few minutes with the popcorn audio converter. I've run into no sync issues with the handful I've tried.

The new firmware is under development and scheduled for Jan 2009. Quote from WD below:

"Our developers are already working on a firmware update but we don't have any information yet as to which issues this firmware update will address. However when the firmware is available for download on our web site, the issues will be listed. We're not sure if it will include power management yet. The proposed date for this update is January 2009."

your not alone - many of us registered because of this lower priced hd player

to be sure - if i have 720p mkvs with dts (dts seems to be common in mkv files) and i hook up the wd tv to my 720p samsung lcd tv with hdmi, i will get no sound? I am just using the tv speakers because i cannot put a loud system in the room

if this is true my options are:
buy a receiver - i guess around ~$500?
buy a box with dts support (ph) ~$215
remake the mkv with re-encoded audio using this tool - ~free

I converted a number of my MKV movies with DTS track to AC3 and usually it takes about 1 hour per movie. I have AMD Athlon64 3200+ so its a very old PC. If you have a more powerful CPU (like Intel or AMD dual- or quad-core CPU at high clock speed) it'll be much faster.

My only issues with this free tool is when I try to convert MKV file with Vorbis audio track it craps out every time. But for DTS audio to AC3 works fine.

And the playback on WD TV is fine afterwards.

are you talking about paid rapidshare or megashare? because the free option is terrible. all that waiting... and file deletes...

Hi,

Great forum!
Bought the WD HD TV today and tested , like it a lot.

BUT ---- Got lot of ripped DVD's and noticed in a VIDEO_TS folder it makes a big difference using the PLAY button instead of the ENTER button.

Hope they fix this in next firmware, also starting top level instead of drilling down to the actuall .vob files would help

:)

I got the WD TV HD mainly for the purpose of playing the 1920x1080 M2TS files from my Sony TG3 camcorder. It seems to serve that purpose fine without showing any blocking or artefacts.

I also had the non-responding remote problem reported by others. However, I managed to narrow it down to IR interference from my Samsung 37M86 LCD TV. It seems to be a known issue with most Samsung LCD TVs. I could sort it out by disabling the "Energy Saving" and Anynet+ features and increasing the backlight to 2. The remote is working fine now.
