View Full Version : *New* Western Digital - WD TV HD Media Player
Hi, what are the differences between these two units?
http://www.wdc.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=734
http://www.wdtvlive.com/products/wdtv_mini#highlights
I have the first one and I really like it but saw the smaller one at a good price and was going to get it for a friend of mine. Is the lack of HDMI in the mini the only difference?
Is it equally easy to use and does it do the same amount of formats? Again, I really like the WD TV. Especially compared to the piece of **** Iomega Screenplayers I had. FOUR of them and none worked right!
Thanks
George
get the WD2 or the Live.
They dont even talk about the Mini themselves!
wokwokabc 12-28-09, 08:51 AM OK...so it was encoded using WMV3 with a WMV9 encoder?
So the problem is that it was encoded with WMV3, even though the encoder was the correct type? :)
No, the fourcc is always WMV3. There is no WMV9 fourcc. It must be something else about the file the WDTV doesn't like. Probably the profile that was used. The encoder has three profiles Simple, Main, and Complex. On my WDTV Live Simple and Main will play. Complex will not.

The Mini doesn't play high definition files.

Which one do you have? the new one or the old one? the newer one will do DTS.
Koenig88 12-29-09, 10:07 AM Which one do you have? the new one or the old one? the newer one will do DTS.
By "newer model" do you mean the WD HD Live model? Because mine is just the standard vanilla non-Live model. Are there two versions of that one as well?

Yep there are two versions of that one as well. There is a newer one that does dts downmix. The "original" WDTVHD does not do downmix, if you look back within the past few pages there is a description of how to tell the difference.
namyelus 12-29-09, 11:20 PM hey gys when i play mkv movie files that are 720p or 1080 they start off really bad like when the characters in the movie move its looks like a robot it doesnt glide good then after a while it becames normal but then te quality is bad like its a cam rip or vcd but when i play it in my macbook its like a blue-ray disc does anyone know why this is happening thanks.
Can anyone help with thumbnail problem?
Unable to get thumbnails for movies on WDTV(first generation model).
I also have a WDTV Live model and am able to get thumbnails to work perfectly everytime.
Followed all of the steps: Name the jpg and the mkv file with the same exact title. Thumbnail are at the recommended size. Place the jpg in the same folder as the mkv file.
The problem is the same external hard drive plugged into WDTV directly(not wireless)will display thumnails on the Live but not the first generation model.
Is there something that needs to be done differently on the first generation model?

I have to ask this. Did you select thumbnails in the box, not folder?
BUKHUMYAI 12-31-09, 12:48 AM You know... I have read alot of problems with the thumbnails issue. I have also have had this issue until one day I powered up my WD external drive and saw that the name of the pics I wanted to use as the thumbnails were named Ex:movie.jpg.jpg but when I resized them as 120x180 I didnt see that and it wasnt displayed as such. I guess the extension was automatically added as jpg when I also renamed it as a jpg so the file names didnt match up exactly as they should. Example..I resized and renamed Finding Nemo.jpg. So it saved it as Finding Nemo.jpg.jpg but only displayed it as Finding Nemo.jpg. Maybe this will help.
I have to ask this. Did you select thumbnails in the box, not folder?
Yes, if what you mean is select thumbnails via the WDTV menu and not "list".
For example all I see is the rectangular picture/icon with the movie sign and not the selected jpg file.
Thanks for the reply! Still trying here...
Gents. I currently have one WDTV (Gen 1) connected to one HDD. Working perfectly. I was wondering if it is possible to configure a 2nd WDTV (Gen 1) and somehow share that same HDD. My gut is telling me it's not going to be possible, but I thought I'd float this scenario out here to see if anyone has either accomplished this or has an idea how it could be done. Thanks in advance to all replies.

I think that would depend on your hard drive and if you could have two sources accessing it. Also I'm not even sure if it will work but if there's only one usb slot on your hard drive you would have to get a usb splitter and use that. That may degrade quality. You would also probably have to get one long usb cable depending on where the 2nd WD would be. This is pretty much the whole point of the live version since you could network all the videos from one source. If I was in your situation, I would sell my original on craigslist for maybe $40 and then buy 2 WD live's. I only have limited knowledge though so hopefully someone can reply back and give you a definitive answer.

hey guys my wd hd tv plays some mkv files really good and some without audio is there any codec i can get for it thanks
There is no codec you can get for it. Most likely the files are encoded with DTS which means you will need a receiver that decodes the DTS signal in order to hear the soundtrack.
You could also go out and buy one of the newer units as they offer DTS downmix which would allow you to hear the sound on a non DTS device.
DigitalfreakNYC 01-02-10, 11:09 AM Can anyone switch theirs to pal? Mine doesn't allow me to.
Lt. Dang 01-02-10, 11:20 AM Can anyone switch theirs to pal? Mine doesn't allow me to.
If you are using an HDMI connection to your TV then PAL and NTSC are not relevant as these are broadcast standards which apply to analog composite video rather than digital HDMI output.
If you switch to composite output you will find that you can select between PAL and NTSC.
Hope this is helpful.

Thank you very much. Hmm...I figured that was the problem with the other files that won't play. I can't get video on them but the audio is fine. They are all PAL :(

This may be redundent, and I may have missed part of the conversation, but have you run MediaInfo on the files to check and make sure what video codec they are ripped in? If the files are something like Divx or 3GPP they may not play, but if the audio is AC3, AAC, MP3, etc, that might account for the audio and no video. I don't know for sure, but it might be worth looking into.

Lt. Dang 01-03-10, 12:28 PM hdmi.
If you ae using HDMI then the question of PAL or NTSC format is not relevant.
It will be down to the format of the files themselves and/or how they were created.

ReedTamaranda 01-03-10, 03:02 PM Ok, this might sound like a shot in the dark, but like most original WDTV owners, I can't playback DTS on .mkv files. I have tried converting to ac3, and occasionally it will work, but most of the time there are errors in the conversion and/or the file just won't play.
So I've been researching ways to encode/decode (sorry, I'm new to audio terminology) the DTS through an external device...basically I want the DTS to play through my stereo system via an external component.
I've found this: http://us.store.creative.com/Home-Theater-Connect-DTS610/M/B002651ZEM.htm#
and from another forum, it seems like this would allow me to hear DTS tracks.
Do I have the right product or should I keep looking?
Derelict_Drvr 01-03-10, 03:03 PM Although I am not well versed in all the codecs, I can see no reason this video will not play. AVC codec and AC3 audio should work fine.
Have you tried muxing the file into an mkv with mkvtoolnix (MKVmerge)? It might be worth a try just to see if that fixes the problem.
ReedTamaranda 01-03-10, 03:06 PM I've tried various audio conversion and muxing programs, but nothing seems to help. Regardless, I would just like to buy a cheap external device that will allow DTS to play...if that's possible.

That isn't going to help you - you'd need a DTS capable receiver to decode the resulting signal. What that device is doing is using DTS Connect to convert any incoming signal into DTS for output to your receiver.
Personally, If I didn't have a DTS receiver, I'd sell your current WDTV and pick up the version 2 model or the Live model, both of which decode DTS internally.

set2374 01-04-10, 01:45 PM I have done a search of the thread and I can't find an answer to a question I have regarding BD rips. I have no problem with playing BD and DVD movie rips. Of course, the WD TV does not support DVD/BD menus. I have no real issue with this in principle. First, the WDTV cannot read .iso files (or so it seems), so dvd rips have to converted to a readable form (for example, .xvid). Second, while the WD TV reads .mts2 files without a problem, when it comes to watching epidsodes of T.V. shows ripped from bluray, I can't watch them in order. It seems to just play the largest file in a loop and there is no way to select a different episode. I have not yet tried to convert the .mts files to h.264 or some other format. If that would work, I would consider doing it--but I am not going to tie up my computer for 12 or 13 hours to convert a 42GB of BD content to H.264 only to find out that it's unreadable or doesn't fix the problem.
If there is a knock against this machine (that I love on the whole), this would be it! I have hundres of tv series on dvd and BD and the thought over converting them all to a different format is really irritating (and would probably melt my CPU!).
Any help from the resident experts will be greatly appreciated!!!!

Since it seems size is not a issue with you, do what I just did for the True Blood series. I used AnyDVD and MakeMKV to extract the individual episodes, then renamed from title01.mkv to Episode Name.mkv (True Blood - s1e01 - Episode Name.mkv). Naming them like this keeps them in order and easier to identify.
With my Quad Core Q6600 and XP Pro I can rip out the full DVD in 45 min. - 1 Hr. It is quicker because there is no compression. One drawback is that MakeMKV extracts the DTS Core so there is not full DTS-HD audio in the file.
goodwad 01-05-10, 09:58 AM I posted this in the other WD TV Live thread, but since this one has more posts I thought I would put my experience with bitstreaming audio with the WDTV Live.
My receiver: Denon AVR 2310CI
Bottom Line: I have ONLY had success with Dolby TrueHD streaming when the the audio and video were in an M2TS container (no luck with MKV).
I've discovered this after failing many times with MKV files and I just played the original "M2TS" file and then I saw "Dolby TrueHD" across the TV screen as WDTV live always shows the audio stream, and then my receiver got the pretty blue light and then it said Dolby TrueHD. I'm not saying you can't play Dolby TrueHD from an MKV container, I'm saying that I was unsuccessful in doing so.
Regarding DTS-MA, when you play a file with DTS-MA inside a M2TS container, the audio codec will be correctly identified by the words "DTS-MA" across the TV screen, but your receiver will only recieve the DTS core, so my receivers says "DTS Surround." Now check this out...when I have DTS-MA inside a MKV container, the words "DTS" will appear across the screen, and my reciever still says "DTS Surround."
My Conclusions: For me, Dolby TrueHD streaming only works with M2TS containers. I literally remuxed an MKV into a M2TS and got the pretty blue light on my receiver. Therefore...my new drug of choice will be M2TS.

MANNNNNN.......you are one lucky man!!
I have the EVA9150 and cannot get audio for the life of me for TrueHD or DTSHD streams with .m2ts files via my Denon 3310.
Its killing me and driving me crazy!
As soon as I downconvert either format to its regular state then I'm ok but if I try to stream with the original audio I get nada.
Any thoughts or ideas?

Based on the SPECS of the EVA9150 (http://www.netgear.com/Products/Entertainment/DigitalMediaPlayers/EVA9150.aspx?detail=Specifications) your situation is understandable as they don't list Dobly TrueHD or DTS-MA in the audio list. They do list AC3, DTS passthrough, and LPCM (but is it 5.1 passthrough?).
I have found experienced some weirdness (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=17832763#post17832763) confirmed on the Official AVS 2310CI thread about MY receiver and certain blue ray players. The issue is with DTS-MA and the receiver showing the decoding pretty blue lights...but no sound passing through. I have toggled on and off the HDMI control from the manual on screen menu setup (which is an uber cool feature to have), and sometimes this kinda works and the sound makes it (I'm still trying to regain cool points with the wife when....the first movie I tried to play with that new 2310CI receiver and my JVC Blueray player was Twlilight (her favorite)...and then no sound passed!!!!)
It's funny...as I now have very strong motivation to figure out how to convert all lossless audio (LPCM and DTS-MA) into Dolby TrueHD....Braveheart just sounds fan-figgin-tastic played through the WDTV Live and my Denon....now showing blue lights!!
Also..I just checked out your HT room...just break down and buy the WDTV Live so you can at least get Dolby TrueHD Streaming. Tell you what...if that new Popbox from the guys at popcorn hour bitstreams all the lossless codecs...I'll cut you a deal on my WDTV, but until I find another $120 solution to bitstream at least some or more HD audio...you'll have to pry it from my cold dead hands. :D
One more thing, my new found discovery changed the way I'm doing things. My plans are now to have 2 large External Hard Drives (2 x 2 TB ought to hold my favorite 100 lossless videos) attached to the WDTV Live that Power Up and Down with the WDTV Live. This will free up space on my file server...which I'm thinking of converting into a Windows 7 MCE DVR (QAM Cable + HD Homerun = good times). Even with all the overhead of MCE running and piping HDMI over Cat 6 to my TV's (hello Monoprice)...it should still have enough leg to serve up music and pictures and standard def videos. My original Xbox's running XBMC will serve up DVD's with menus and handle music and photo duty.
I spend hours banging my head on this lossless audio journey with WDTV live...now my experience shows up quick on an AVS Forum search...good luck to you all.

Ok, I'll try it later and I let you know how it goes. I can live without the DTS HD. BTW, I do care about file size, but not enough to spend the hundreds of hours it would take to compress my video files. I have a lot of movies and tv shows ripped from my PVR and I have ripped about half of my DVD and BD movies and tv series (~800-1000 movies and tons of tv series). [I am probably significanly understating the size of the collection--I purchased about 6-10 DVD (now BDs) a month since 1999] I am not a techie, but I built my HTPC and learned some basic ripping skills TV because my wife was overwhelmed by the number of discs in the collection and wants to box them up (or throw them out--although that would end in divorce).
Do you know of any free software that will automatically remove the commercials from recorded tv shows?
Thanks for the help.

I haven't had luck with this either on my Pioneer 819 (not fancy but decodes DD TrueHD and DTS-MA). I heard somewhere (take with a grain of salt) that WD TV (any of them) will not bitstream DTS-MA because of licensing issues with DTS. I am not sure if this is true or not.

WD's website doesn't list the specs of DTS-MA and Dolby TrueHD, but I read through these threads like you and someone mentioned the licensing issue about DTS with DTS-MA. For the price of the WDTV Live, I am not surprised about not being able to stream DTS-MA, I think that it being able to stream DolbyTrueHD is worth $20 to me (said this because their are other network streamers out there that can be had for $100).
The following will display on your TV if you play an M2TS with Dolby TrueHD:
"Audio Channel DDTrueHD (Digital)"
The following will display on your TV if you play an M2TS with DTS-MA:
"Audio Channel DTSMA (Digital)"
BUT, your receiver will only receive the DTS Core even though the TV displayed otherwise, so my receiver displays "DTS Surround"
I can only speak to my experiences as the WDTV website doesn't even mention Dolby TrueHD and DTSMA. It may be worthwhile to mention that I installed the first firmware update to come out for the WDTV Live, but avoided the update that bricked several WDTV devices.

ruarmani 01-06-10, 12:00 AM Can you please help me here? I have WD Media Player v2, I am using Denon 3808 receiver and projector. Everything works and looks great, but sometimes, when I play mkv file bluray rip with DTS sound it loses the sound and start playing, sort of, fast forwarding at x2, if I stop and play it again, it will play for a minute and will go back to that. I turn it off, turn it on and it works fine for the whole movie. Sometime I have to do it twice to get it to work. What the problem could be? I updated to 1.01.75...
bas2001 01-06-10, 12:05 AM Hello,
I have a WD HD Media Player for couple of weeks now. I am very satisfied with the quality of 1080P HD/BD Rips. But regular DVD Rip quality is poorer than I thought. I get much better quality video with my Xbox Media Center for DVDRips. Can anyone suggest any kind of tuning that can make the DVDRips look better like in XBMC?
Sorry, if I posted the question in the wrong place. If this was already discussed here, please point me to the right place.
Thanks in advance.
EDIT: Same law quality issue goes to DVD9 images as well. So, it is not a bad DVDRip issue.
Hello all,
After reading this thread and the thread for the WDTV Live, I purchased the WDTV version2. I didn’t need the networking since I would be using this straight to my lcd tv and receiver. Install was simple, and I like the way it looks(compact). I am having a problem though…
I have a lot of .mp4 videos and each one of them stutters(flickers) during playback. I tested a bunch of them and it is happening to all of them. Is there a fix for this or does WDTV just have problems playing .mp4 files? The firmware on mine is the one that ends in .70. As much as I like it, if it can’t play my .mp4 files, then its going to have to go back. Strangely, when I plug my external hdd to my ps3 it plays the .mp4 files fine with no problems.
I really hope there is a fix to this because I prefer not to stream my media, and love the fact that the WDTV allows the use of thumbnails. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
hey i had the same problem i couldn't play dts files apparently the model i had doesnt play it if you have the model WD00AVN give it back and get the WDBABF000NBK
i have that one now and can play everything even my mac formatted hdd
Whats with the different model numbers being able to do different things?
My model # is even different from those...Hmmmm

I'm not making a leap of anything. I just keep confirming...here's one more...I watched GI Joe recently (WDTV displayed "DTSMA", and my receiver displayed "DTS Surround")...and PLENTY of pop came from my two surrounds. Do I even have to talk about Trasformers 2 (wife talked about that one for days...)
What does your WDTV Live downmix to? Stereo? Do you have your audio output set to digital?
"Knowing is half the battle..."
liquidmetal 01-07-10, 12:35 AM No, I believe it is downmixing to DTS 5.1, but it is not extracting the core.
Try both ways and see for yourself. Extract the core yourself and compare
to dts hd ma track.

Interesting...
I'll give it a go...probably with Transformers 2. I'll pick it off the core, and remux with both DTS-MA and the Core as a second audio stream...while I'm at it...might as well throw in an AC3 version just for fun...and switch audio streams from the options menu. Will be a weekend gig though, the big game is about to start.
Do you know how I can convert raw LCPM to Dolby TrueHD?

I leave them as an external subtitle file with avi's, or mux them into an mkv with MKVmerge I haven't tried it, but you might be able to mux them into an m2ts file with TSmuxer, but I don't know. I have a couple of avi files, and m2ts bluray files, I might try tomorrow just to see if it works.
Not sure where the best place is to post this, but with my new love for this device, I went out and picked up a WD external USB drive (My Book Essential) and I'm looking to get a Blu-ray player for my PC so that I can rip and store them locally and the wife can play them as she wants without having to dig up the discs.
That said, can anyone suggest a good software for the PC to rip BDs to use with this device and also, although I'm sure I can find one through Newegg, a good PC BD player for the ripping?
Thanks in advance!

If you are running Windows, the only purchased sofware you will need is AnyDVD HD. There are 3 freeware programs to use, depending on if you want to compress the video or not.
1st is MakeMKV. You can directly rip BD to an MKV file and then compress with:
2nd is Handbrake. With this you can compress and change the audio to a stereo track if you want.
3rd is TSmuxer. Use this one to rip out the movie only (MakeMKV does the same thing, except it is in an mkv container) and keep the original m2ts file format. TSmuxer is best for converting BD's with multiple m2ts files to a single m2ts file.
As far as a Bluray player goes, unless you also want a burner, they are all about the same. Players such as Plextor and Pioneer are better quality, but they have a higher cost also.
Don't know if this is the correct thread for this question.
I want to get a portable Hard drive for my WD TV HD Media Player. Any suggestions? What drives are reliable and which ones shouls I stay away from.
Thanks.
I am having a problem with my WD TV live. I am trying to watch .iso rips of 2 different blu-rays the audio showed up as 1:1 DD TrueHD and i get no sound.
My receiver is a Pioneer SC-25
The Blu-ray plays fine in my Sony s360
By the way other Blu-rays and dvds play fine as .iso but the audio shows up as AC3 or DTS.
Any ideas

This might be a silly question, but does your receiver decode Dolby TrueHD? That is where I would start.
Yes it can decode Dolby TrueHD
here are the specs. http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Products/HomeEntertainment/AV-Receivers/EliteReceivers/ci.SC-25.Kuro?tab=B
Thanks for the help
goodwad 01-09-10, 03:39 PM I could not tell the difference between bitstreaming the DTSMA track from WDTV Live and bitstreaming the DTS Core I extracted as a 2nd stream (ran TSMuxer from command line with -core switch).
In both cases, my receiver read "DTS Surround." In the case of the DTS-MA, the WDTV Live displayed "DTSMA", in the case of the DTS Core Audio Track, WDTV Live displayed "DTS."
My ears are not the best, and my speakers are 4xTSB, 1 TC2, and a T300 from The Speaker Company (May they Rest In Peace).
If WDTV live is "downmixing" the DTS-MA track, it is downmixing to 5.1, and sounds just like the DTS Core to my ears.
Wow, this thread moves so fast, it's insane trying to keep up!
I asked this before but in too general of a question so I thought I'd try again.
One of my goals to ease the issues with the wife and kid is to rip Blu-rays over to a new external WD HD I hooked up to the WD TV HD set.
From reading, it seemed AnyDVD HD was quite popular, so I just bought that as well as an internal BD player for my PC.
In reading that burning to .iso is a nice clean method, the issue with WD TV HD box is that it can't play chapters that way or move around at all other than playing it from start to finish.
If that is the case, can anyone point me to a link (there are so many, each with their own bend) or explain what I should do with AnyDVD HD to rip a Blu-ray we own such that it is easiest for WD TV HD to play and also removes all the stuff but the movie?
THANKS!

AnyDVD simply removes the copy protection in place on Standard DVD and Bluray discs.
For Bluray, after AnyDVD recognizes the disc, right click on the Fox icon in your system tray and choose "Rip Video DVD to Harddisk". Save the files on your largest HDD in your computer (avoid externals). From there install MakeMKV. When you run MakeMKV, after it does its initial scan, click on "File" --> "Open file" and navigate to your folder for the movie. Open the folder and click on "MoveObject" then click "Open". After the open dialog box closes, you can start the rip. MakeMKV will come up with a window of all the titles on the disc. Uncheck all but the title with the most chapters and largest file size. Usually the first title, but not always
I have found that not all BD discs will let you save the chapter information, and I haven't figured out how to get chapters in those discs. However, you can stop the movie in mid-play, and if you do not unplug the unit/HDD, you can restart the movie where you left off. One way to do this is to arrow down to "Recent" under "All Movies" (I have the Live version, so it might be different on the HD) and choose the movie you were watching. When prompted, arrow right to "OK" and press "Enter". That will resume the movie where you left off.

Thanks for the quick response. I'll download MakeMKV in a sec (darn NFL football getting in the way :P)
I guess when they can't have chapters, I'll tell them to just fast forward :) Sometimes they like to just quickly watch a part of a movie the kid likes while eating or whatever so chapters are nice but still better than having discs all over the floor and the rest of the mess so having it all on HD is great.
BTW, I am assuming that the conversion from ISO to MKV doesn't lose any quality?
Also, is it within Any DVD HD or MakeMKV that I could remove the trailers and other stuff that come with some discs? Sounds like the MakeMKV program? I'll google it more.
Derelict_Drvr 01-09-10, 05:43 PM BTW, I am assuming that the conversion from ISO to MKV doesn't lose any quality?
No. MakeMKV does a 1:1 rip. No compression.
BTW, you talk about ISO's. I am not sure MakeMKV will rip the movie out of an ISO. I will have to create one and check it out.
Derelict_Drvr 01-09-10, 05:58 PM I just did a test, and yes MakeMKV will rip the movie out of an .iso image. I learned sumpin' new today.

Well, I should have explained it better. I read in a few posts that that is the easiest way to keep everything together in a 'container'. I'm a noob at this so maybe forget I said .iso.
What is the best method in AnyDVD HD to rip the disc for use with WD HD TV box? I think .iso might be convenient for other purposes but maybe not as much so for WD HD TV box.
Since you seem to have experience, what do you do for ripping BDs that seem to work well with the WD HD TV given that I now own AnyDVD HD?
EDIT: One of my goals is to also exclude anything but the movie so the kid/wife can just highlight it with the GUI, click enter, and it starts to play (as best as possible)

AnyDVD is software used to remove the copy protection on a disc or copying the complete disc to the hard drive. The best (for me) is to use the method I described above. Using MakeMKV you can also rip straight to .mkv from the disc, but I like copying BD discs to the hard drive, then rip with MakeMKV because it seems to be smoother that way. Standard Definition discs, I rip directly from the disc. I can rip out a movie only in about 10-15 minutes(30-45 minutes for a Bluray off the hard drive).
Once you get it all figured out, it is easy as falling of a ladder, but not nearly as painful.
I have tried to answer your very question several times. Guess I am going to have to write a primer in notepad or Word, and put it someplace like mediafire so people can download it.
liquidmetal 01-09-10, 06:49 PM Nice to have a second opinion. On the movie I tried, I did hear a difference. Maybe placebo effect? Anyways, this all may be a moot point since as soon as popbox comes out, it will bitstream dtshdma.

liquidmetal 01-09-10, 06:51 PM For bluray, I:
1. anydvd
2. bdinfo (if movie spread across multiple m2ts) to find the playlist
3. tsmuxergui to extract a clean m2ts
4. web to download external subtitles and .jpg.
works for me.
takes about 10 minutes.

And Derelict_Drvr, you have answered my question (initial one) but when I'm looking at the output, I don't get how to strip out some of the stuff I don't want.
And of course once you've done it a few times, you always wonder how other noobs can't see it. Hell, I was so confused by the most basic concepts when we redid a 10+ year old entertainment system we had.
Now I look back at my questions and want to smack myself upside the head, but ignorance and lack of knowledge can make the simplest tasks seem daunting when they really are not.
The firs time I start bit torrenting (before uTorrent was mainstream) and tried to figure it all out, the dangers, ipfilter and how to manage it, etc. it was a nightmare. Now it seems like childsplay, so I'm guessing this will be too to me (one day).
Thank you all the same!
Derelict_Drvr 01-09-10, 10:51 PM I don't get how to strip out some of the stuff I don't want.
I guess I don't understand what you want to strip out. MakeMKV will process the main movie. You have to deselect the titles that are NOT the main movie.
goodwad 01-09-10, 11:06 PM ...this all may be a moot point since as soon as popbox comes out, it will bitstream dtshdma.
I hope you're right on that...if so I'm in for one. I can get over a few ads if I can get a wife friendly menu that is not sluggish, is reliable, has metadata with thumbnails, bitstreams the HD audio codecs, and let's me mooch off my parents Netflix account for $130.

Ahhh I might have missed that slightly important point you made :) Yes, it seems like common sense but clearly not common practice for me yet. Sending this in from the phone, will try it again when I get home!
(andyone want to borrow a kid so it gives me time to figure all this out!? Still trying to calibrate the Onkyo and LCD...each time I run a sound calibration, of course he makes noise! :))

Haha I would feel bad calling him an ape! Plus, my luck, that makes CNN somehow as reverse descrimination! You're bad :)
P.S. I have called him a monkey on more than one occassion but always have this weird fear someone will call me out for it. Yeah, I know. We've let the pendulum (sp?) swing too far and sadly, I let it affect me.
Anyway, back on topic!

You might try muxing the avi and srt into a single mkv file using MKVmerge (download MKVtoolnix).

Neoculture 01-11-10, 12:38 AM To all MakeMKV gurus... please help.
I normally use "DVD Decryptor" and "Fair Use 2" to rip my DVDs and compress them with H264. Compression is so-so, I can cut out the black bars on widescreen movies, but I loose chapters. Now that I have more disk-space (5Tb), I thought I'd give MakeMKV a go but I ran into problems:
I ripped a movie from DVD ("Star Trek - The Motion Picture") using MakeMKV (as well as some smaller "specials" from the second disk) and it ripped through like a charm. But trying to view the new MKVs on my Vista laptop simply crashes the viewing programs (MPC, WMP, WinAmp, I tried a few). It also seems to make Windows Explorer unhappy (?). Anime MKVs I downloaded all play without a hitch, so it's not MKVs in general.
Transferring the files to the WDTV (gen 1), the file *plays* OK, but suffers from other strangeness - if I fast-forward (or reverse) the film FFs without a problem but as soon as I hit PLAY again, it starts playing from the point where I'd originally pressed FF. As for chapters, WDTV tells me they're there and lists them, but selecting one seems to do nothing at all.
Confused.

I am not exactally sure, but the problem may lay with the fact that you use DVD Decrypter. Decrypter is is pretty much obsolete. To replace it, download and install DVD43 (http://www.dvd43.com/). With it, you can rip straight from disc to mkv. Removes the DVD Decrypter step.
DVD43 runs in the background, like AnyDVD, to remove copy protection. No need for a time consuming step to decrypt. I don't think it works on Bluray though. For that you will have to get AnyDVD HD.
I haven't tested it yet, but I think with DVD43 you can rip straight from disc with Handbrake also. Handbrake will take a little longer, but it definately preserves chapters and you can rip the subtitle(s) and more than one audio track in too. Just be sure the "Forced" box is not checked on any of the subtitles. That makes them "selectable".
Handbrake takes a little more ripping savvy, like knowing about bitrates and/or files size, than MakeMKV. But it gives you more options to tweak, batch convert for discs with multiple titles (Like TV series), re-frame settings, etc.
I, too, have Fair Use 2. But as my ripping knowledge has matured I have found better ways to get a higher quality rip. I started with Magic DVD Ripper, moved to MakeMKV, stepped up to Fair Use 2 and finally to Handbrake. Each step giving me better video quality and/or compression.

Thanks. I have AnyDVD HD, so I'll just rip straight from the disc (I had the ISO on the HDD already, so I used them for MakeMKV).
A big advantage (for me and my large DVD movie/TV collection) is how fast MakeMKV seems to be, both in setting up the rip and the actual rip itself. Is Handbrake as easy/quick?
Derelict_Drvr 01-11-10, 06:36 PM Is Handbrake as easy/quick?
No & No.
But if storage space is not an issue for you, stick with MakeMKV. If it is, you can compress the video by about half and still have a good PQ with Handbrake. Handbrake is like any compression program. There are settings you need to adjust to get the best possible rip in the least amount of file size. There are also settings for Re-frames and B-frames that you can set. It takes a little know-how to get a good rip thru Handbrake, but it is worth it if you know what you are doing.

Right... ripped the movie straight out from the DVD and tested it on the Vista Laptop as before. Vista still complained of DLLs which crashed, but Media Player Classic *did* play the file and gave me access to the chapters.
On a whim, I turned on the "only show icon, not thumbnails" option for the directory and the DLL problem went away. So it seems the DLLs (which are not named in the error message - damn MS) had to do with creating a thumbnail for the movie... even though it was displaying the directory in "list" mode and no thumbnails were required. The question then becomes, why is it having problems creating thumbnails from *these* MKVs and not from others. <sigh>
Haven't tested the new files on the WDTV - will do so tonight.
Derelict_Drvr 01-13-10, 09:51 PM Thought I do not know for sure, I would hazard a guess as to the problem being with the thumbnail. I.E. A progressive jpg for example. If a jpg thumbnail caused a problem on a certain file, it should cause a problem on all files if it is a bug with WDTV HD.
All my files are mkv, and every one of them has a jpg thumbnail. I have never had a problem other than a couple would not show up at all. I blamed that on the image. Changed images and it worked fine.
Neoculture 01-14-10, 09:54 PM Haven't tested the new files on the WDTV - will do so tonight.
<sigh> no luck. FF and chapters still do not work. But they do work when I use Media Player Classic on the laptop.
Any ideas as to why?
Wow, given how long AVS has been around, I'm sure some long timers have seen some large posts, but this thread will break 10K replies.
How often does that happen? Just curious what else has had a lot of activity... ;)
NOTE: I went and checked many of the other forums and sub-forums. There are a few over 10k now but a couple threads started in 2007 and a couple in early-mid 2008.
I'm sure someone can link a thread that hasn't had a zombie revival in a while but was quite the hot button for a while. Always fun to read the good, bad, and indifferent of something in the past...at least if you can relate to it.
JLBENEDICT 01-25-10, 09:24 AM Hello WD TV (original) users! I've had this device since last year and its pretty much done what I thought it would at the price point I paid for it.
Upscales standard definition DVD's quite well and look great on our 42" plasma. Really don't see the need to go to BR quite yet.
I only possess DVD's and have been ripping them each to one single MKV container using MakeMKV.
Without going through the previous 320+ pages, what causes certain movies/files to have small "hiccups" or stutters during playback.
For example, American Gangster, with Denzel Washington.. had a few stutters throughout the movie.
jiggawhat 01-25-10, 03:39 PM Sometimes it's the hard drive that can cause stutters and it could be in your case.
I hope I'm in the right place to ask this question. Up until now my WDTV 2nd gen has been able to play every 720p/1080p file I throw at it (over 1,000).
I have a 720p x264 file in an .mkv container that I'm getting the error "unsupported file format".
Can someone that knows how to decipher the codec information take a look at this and see if you know why WDTV can't play it?

Here it is. Thanks for looking at it for me. Maybe you'll be able to determine why the WDTV won't play this file. By the way, I tried it on both a WDTV Live and WDTV 2nd gen.

Derelict_Drvr 01-25-10, 07:45 PM There is nothing that stands out to me about why this files will not play, other than the fact that it is a high enough bitrate to not stream well (if at all) over a network.
What you might try is putting this file on an external HDD attached to the WDTV. Wait. My bad. This *IS* the WDTV HD thread.
OK, something you might try (just to see if there is a error with the muxing into mkv) is to use tsmuxer and try muxing the file into an m2ts container and try it again.
If you can, grab a small 10-15 second clip from the file and upload it to someplace like Mediafire so we can download it and give it a try.

Thanks. Yes, it's connected via external HDD. I forgot to mention that it plays fine on my pc.
HDgaming42 01-25-10, 11:29 PM moved this question to a more active (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=18010881&posted=1#post18010881) WDTV Live thread...
People telling me the latest firmware will fix the power of HD when the box off. It is not working on me. I tried the WD Element with the Live version is ok, but not this box.
This thread is dead cold.
Not sure if I'm doing something wrong or it's just a quirk of the WDTV, but here's my story. I have one USB HDD attached to my WDTV. It's a 1TB Verbatim. There are approximately 700+ mkv's on it and they all play great. The problem is when I have a new movie I want to add to the HDD, I detach the USB cable from the WDTV, add my new movie folder, delete the .wd file and then plug the USB HDD back into the WDTV. Now, when I turn on the WDTV and go to "All Video", my thumbnails are blank and they all have to be "refreshed" by paging down through all of the movies. Note that if I do not delete the .wd file from the HDD prior to reattaching the HDD to the WDTV, I will get duplicate thumbnails in "All Video". Like I said, maybe I'm doing something wrong here, sequence wise. If I am please let me know the proper way to add additional movies to the HDD without have to scroll through every page in the "All Video" to refresh the thumbnails. One additional note, before I detach the HDD from the WDTV, I make sure that the WDTV is off, however I do not use the "eject drive" feature on the WDTV. Any help would really be appreciated. Thanks in advance and sorry for rambling on.
Derelict_Drvr 02-20-10, 12:06 PM @ajcmak-
I am not sure what generation of the WDTV HD your are using, but ALWAYS use the eject button to remove your HDD. I have had problems, even on the WDTV Live that turns off the USB port, when I unplug a drive without ejecting.
As far as taking some time to view thumbnails after deleting the .wd folder when you add a movie, that is not uncommon. Your unit needs to rescan the HDD to recapture all the jpg's for your videos. It takes a little while to scan a 1TB drive. Plug your drive in, give it a minute or two and then check to see if your thumbnails all show.
Addressing multiple thumbnails, do those videos have an apostrophy in the title? I am not sure about the Gen 2 WDTV HD, but the Gen 1 did not like an apostrophy. It would cause a video thumbnail to show up on the menu multiple times. Rename to remove the ', and all will be fine.
moolala 02-21-10, 03:01 PM Here it is. Thanks for looking at it for me. Maybe you'll be able to determine why the WDTV won't play this file. By the way, I tried it on both a WDTV Live and WDTV 2nd gen.

Once upon a time there would have been about a dozen people pounce on this one within a few minutes.
Not sure why people would say they see no reason why you have prob (they should maybe say they just don't know...)
Anyhow...
#1. widely known fact that reframes must be 5 or less....this file indicates 9 (end result is usually extremely choppy playback)
#2. the player will NOT decode DTS, so if you aren't passing digital signal through to an AV receiver (which I'm gathering you're not) then you will get the "unsupported" message.......run it through popcorn audioconverter and change to AC3 which the player can then decode into 2ch stereo output (however in this instance the reframe count will still cause you viewing problem).
cheers, moo

Wrong. I play video with 8-10 reframes all day long on my WDTV Live. Should work as well with The WDTV HD Gen 2 because it is nothing more than the Live without network capability.
#2. the player will NOT decode DTS
Wrong again. WDTV Live and WDTV GD Gen 2 will both decode DTS
It was the WDTV HD Gen 1 (the original) that had the problems you are stating.

Well, on the box for the Gen 2 there is the red DTS logo which the old Gen 1 does not have.

By the way, I tried it on both a WDTV Live and WDTV 2nd gen.
Does this player or any other media player do the vertical stretch for anamorphic viewing. I try to find this information on this very long thread but could not find it unfortunately. This is the only this that is stopping me from buying this player. Please some one advise.
christer W. 03-02-10, 11:46 PM More of an FYI and perhaps not so hot of news, but I was in Costco today here in Salt Lake City and saw a large stack of the WDTV's. Barely $100.
Sharp contrast to the CimemaTube I bought last fall where I had to wait three weeks to get one. I am sure both units have their respective strenghts and pluses, but for me, watching ripped BR in .mkv format for the most part, I'm sure either would have been just fine.

Actually there reason I'm asking is that I thought since WD itself always advertises the WD TV with one of their Passport drives, there may be some specific power requirements (e.g. necessarily to be through the USB port, etc.)

you are supposed to this with external hdd or usb drives, there is no storage as such in the wd's.

Yes, most (if not all) external USB HDDs that have their own external power supply can be used with the WDTV.
I have used a few different brands of this type, including the My Book Essential, and they have all worked fine.

Neoculture 03-03-10, 10:14 PM My WDTV has been behaving curiously lately.
Setup:
WDTV (gen 1) with WDLXTV 0.5.8.1 loaded on it, USB Ethernet adaptor, 7-port USB hub with 5x1Tb WD MyBooks.
It was behaving itself until recently. Now, whenever I play a movie file (MKV, AVI, doesn't seem to matter) it will play the file but will "hang" at the end of the playback. By "hang", I mean the following symptoms:
1) If I hit "stop" in the middle of the end credits, the WDTV menu is displayed but the sound continues until the end of the movie file.
2) If I wait until the file ends (and I pressed "enter" to play the file), the screen goes dark at the end of the show for about 3 seconds then it drops back to the menu.
3) If I wait until the file ends (and I pressed "play" to play the file), it does *not* go on to the next file, but displays the behaviour in point 2. Pressing "next" does not do anything.
Once I am back to the menu, I can move about the menu but selecting a new file to play simply gives a black screen (no OSD, no anything). The screen stays black until I press stop, at which point I am back to the menu again.
Rebooting the box (via hard-disconnect or "reboot -f") allows me to select another file and play it, at which point I'm back to the "hanging" symptoms.
It's almost as if the "player" process doesn't die but simply hangs around after playing the video - but I can't see anything when doing a "ps" on the WDTV.
Anybody else have the same problem, or have an idea of what is going on?
Just found this thread! The issue that I have with playing movies from my hard drive that I have riopped from a original. When I ask to play a movie, it will play in what ever language that is first on the files. Also it does the same with captions. How do you get around this? I tried to get to the menu in a movie but can't find the proper VTS file. With all the VTS files, what one contains the full movie?

If it's a gen 1 than 9 reframes would be too high IF the video were 1080p, but it's 720, and 9 reframes is fine for 720p :) Other than the excessive bitrate, and file size for a 720, I'm not seeing a problem with the video, but that's not a surprise, back when I used the WDTV there were a bunch of files that the specs looked right but people would report not playing, I never ran into them, but some apparently had problems.
Wrong again. WDTV Live and WDTV GD Gen 2 will both decode DTS
It was the WDTV HD Gen 1 (the original) that had the problems you are stating. They released a WDTV that decodes DTS? Or does it just do pass-through? Interesting.

I am new and tried really hard to browse through the topic to find what i need but no luck-it is huge. :) So sorry if this was alredy asked but i havent found the answer anywhere although there where numerous places where people said they have the same problem. I have WDTV GEN 2 i am having serious problems with audio out of sync in .mkv files. My firmware is 1.01.77. Is there any way to solve this-downgrade to another firmware or do anything else? Any help is greatly appreciated!

I placed the exports file on the usb drive along with other system files like root.bin, wdtv.bin, etc. But seems the ext3-boot does not take the file. If created its own exports instead. What should I do to have the ext3-boot to take my exports file?
Yukon Trooper 03-23-10, 08:16 PM Hey, guys. So I sent a support message to WD asking if the Gen.1 player will get the same color space fix as the Live. It sounds like, at least from the reply of the WD agent, that the Gen.1 will get another firmware update, but that the color space fix probably won't happen. Here is the transcript:
Customer (Me) 03/20/2010 05:06 PM
Hi there. I am inquiring about future firmware updates for the original WD TV HD Media Player. Will there be any, or has support been dropped for this product? Specifically, I am curious if the player will receive the same color space conversion fix that will be available in the next WD TV Live firmware update. Cheers.
Response (Pablo R.) 03/22/2010 12:08 PM
Dear DAVE,
Thank you for contacting Western Digital Customer Service and Support. My name is Pablo R.
The support for the WD TV Gen 1 has not been discontinued, we will keep updating this device. Regarding your question of the color space, this might not be possible in the WD TV Gen 1, as both devices have different interface.
I hope that we have met your expectations today and that you are satisfied with our service. If you have any further questions, please reply to this email and we will be happy to assist you further.
Customer (Me) 03/22/2010 07:13 PM
According to Western Digital engineers, the color space fix for the Live was rather easy to implement. Considering the Gen.1 WD TV HD runs on the same processing chip (I realized this was false afterward), it should be relatively easy to fix for that player as well. Perhaps you could forward this message to one of the engineers? Also, when is the next update for the Gen.1 WD expected? Even a rough estimate would be great. I'd like to know if the color space issue will be fixed so that I can decide whether or not to sell my Gen.1 WD and
pick up an ASUS O!Play instead, which handles non-flagged HD material correctly for color space. Cheers.
Response (Pablo R.) 03/23/2010 05:20 AM
Dear DAVE,
Thank you for your reply.
I did escalated this to our engineers, and they response was that this might not be integrated in the Gen 1, as for the next firmware update, even thou we do not give estimate in firmware release, I press a bit the topic and we are expecting to have a new release by the end of April or mid May.
I hope that we have met your expectations today and that you are satisfied with our service. If you have any further questions, please reply to this email and we will be happy to assist you further.
I've replied by asking him if the Gen.2 will receive a fix and will update when I hear back. Cheers.
I had issues with playing music and movies thru my WD Media player. I was using NTSF on my USB drive so I refomated to the fat32 and it works perfect. I store music and movies on a 2TB Seagate USB drive and it is fast and easy to play.

If you ever unplug your USB drive without first ejecting it, it will cause problems on your drive whether it is NTFS or FAT32. I have several NTFS drives that all work flawlessly.
Only problem with FAT32 formatted drives is that you are limited to 4GB for a file size. You try to load anything larger than that on a FAT32 drive, it will give you an error message telling you the drive is full.

That's odd as I have movies on that drive that are bigger than 4 gb and never have had that message. The usb drive is an external one and I just unplug it after use and then plug into the WD Media player. No issues with it.

They play SD-DVD iso's just fine (movie only, no menus or extra features)
My questions is about HD-DVD iso's which i've seen others claim play.
Anyone out there know the correct way to rip HD-DVD to iso that will play on the WDTV?Does it have to be iso? How about mkv? A quick search turned up the topic Blu-ray/DVD/HD-DVD to MKV (http://a8t8.spaces.live.com/blog/cns%212518DD508BB713E8%21601.entry). I haven't tried anything on that page but it sounds like something there might work. BTW, although the page says that MakeMKV doesn't support HD-DVD, MakeMKV's site says the beta provides limited support (i.e. it might or might not work).
In any case for a v.1 WDTV you'll want to be able to convert DTS audio to AC3 unless your sound system can decode DTS, because the original WDTV can't.

Yea, really like keep the whole HD-DVD intact. Maybe WD at some point will release one that handles iso's correctly, or may have to move to the popcorn-hour player.
So anyways anybody have any luck getting HD-DVD's iso to play on the WDTV?
Thanks

Well, sell it, throw it away or give it away and buy the popcorn hour. I'm sure Western Digital won't mind

Thanks. Looks like I will have to do it. Had good amount of space free in my 1TB My Passport. I may think of buying a 500GB or 750GB one which seems to be cheaper these days as there is more demand for 1TB and above.

St4rsh1p 04-23-10, 04:04 AM Hello everyone !
I'm here because i've got a little question about NFS sharing.
I'm using b-rad firmware with NFS and i've a NAS on my network.
When I copy something from the NAS to my PC, i've got like 10Mo/s speed. But when I test from the WDHDTV, I only get 3.5Mo/s. So when I tried to read 1080p on the network, there are some freezes etc ...
I'm using the Trendnet TU2-ET100 on the WDTVHD and all the device are on the same switch (100Mbps).
Do you know if there is something that could boost the speed ? Or something I should check to be sure there is no problem with the sharing configuration ?
Picked up a hd-dvd cd\dvd drive for my computer on the cheap and trying to rip my HD-DVD collection to iso to play on the WDTV. Ripped "The Mummy" with both isobuster and DVD95copy and get an "Unsupported Format" when i try to play either one of the rips i made for the WDTV.
Anyone out there know the correct way to rip HD-DVD to iso that will play on the WDTV?
Thanks for any help

there's nrg (not ISO) files. Try to drag nrg files to VLC then see what happen...maybe the same thing will also happen in WDTV
_Duncan_ 06-05-10, 10:53 AM Anyone know any easy way to hide a particular folder from scanning on the external harddrive other than renaming the individual files to non-audio or non-video extensions? I am trying to hide particular video folder from kids and other family members (non-techies). :-)
Put a dot at the beginning of the folder name.

gastonv 06-20-10, 03:56 PM Hi; I asked WD support for DVD menu support, here is their response
I apologize for the inconvenience. We are currently working on it, however we don't have an ATA when it would be released.
At least the have not discontinued support for Gen 1 :)
BowerR64 06-21-10, 03:00 PM Now that i have my WD live running good i want to try some of the B-rad firmwares on my Gen 1 unit.
What is the best B-rad firmware if i dont want the USB network part?
Im not interested in networking my units but i want some other features to play around with.
A link to the firmware would be helpful too if you could.
vanylapep 06-21-10, 03:09 PM how well does the Dlink DNS-321 works with this? i plan to hook two 2TB Hd to make 4GB of movies..

WD sells them in their store.

Or for a better option and a chance to get rid of your remote clutter get a Logitech Harmony remote. I bought the model 650 for $80 and it's great, works better than the original WD and also controls all my other stuff. With the activity buttons set up I push one button and my tv comes on in the right input, the av receiver, the WDTV comes up on the main menu. Very cool and very customizable.

hate to tell you but don't expect any further support for the Gen1.
WD has confirmed (kinda) that Gen1 has reached end of life . . .
See this thread that i started (and eventually ended) in WD's forums:
http://community.wdc.com/t5/WD-TV-HD/True-that-support-firmware-for-Gen-1-is-discontinued/td-p/24504
joshjoshlol 06-23-10, 10:22 PM Okay, I searched the archives for this but couldn't find anything in this thread to answer:
Usually I re-encode my videos, but yesterday I tried archiving a tv series DVD with 3 episodes into a single .iso file, for the sake of speed. On my Gen 1 WDTV, when I play back the file (pressing either play or select on the remote) only the first episode is played, and none of the other ones within the .iso file.
Does the Gen 1 WDTV support multiple episodes in an .iso or not? Does lack of menu support prohibit this? WDTV customer email support did nothing to help answer this.
testudo 08-09-10, 01:24 PM Instead of creating an ISO, just rip as ONE large VOB file. You can also rename the VOB file with a .mpg extension if you have any playback issues FF/RW'ing in the VOB.
No menus of course, but I have had success playing ripped DVD files in this manner.
hilander 08-17-10, 05:42 AM Once you add the search criterion (eg musical, etc ...) in the section of WD TV Live YouTube dedicated to the research I noticed that this criterion is stored or at least I was not able to delete it ...
How is it possible to delete different search criteria from time to time in the "find" YouTube WD Live TV?
Thank you very much

Yes, this is what I have done from day one and it works fine for me. Also works very well fir me with episodic DVDs where I rip each individual episode to it's own VOB. That way I can view all the episodes and in their original correct order.

FCBarca 08-26-10, 08:42 PM Came back from vacation and noticed a strange issue with my WD TV (Gen1)...When it fires up, the picture on my HDTV doesn't look as sharp as it normally does...Essentially doesn't look HD but SD.
I use HDMI cables, optical audio cable, I have a 1080p TV, a Denon Receiver and no amount of replugging/unplugging seems to rectify the issue...Playback occurs but again it does not look HD, looks a little darker too
Could it be the WDTV player itself?...My HDMI cable?...Thoughts?

Yeah, I tried that...It's set for Auto as I've always had it there...Strange
burntresistor 09-05-10, 12:42 AM I recently brought the media player. The problem I'm having is the audio and video go out of sync. If I stop it, then resume it will go back to working fine again. It's really annoying is there anything I can do to fix this permanitly? I have it directly hook up with a external WD drive I have.
originalsnuffy 09-05-10, 03:08 PM Hi all,
I have been looking for a device that still has old fashioned component video outputs and optical digital (SPDIF), but also is HDMI capable. This unit looks like a good choice on that front. I also wanted Netflix capabilities, check.
I get the impression that bitstreaming audio is somewhat hit or miss on the device, along with mp4 playback. Is that correct or a mis-understanding?
Currently I have a Popcorn A110 in the primary system. This unit would go into the upstairs system, which is a hybrid of older and newer equipment. Of course eventually the old equipment will be upgraded to the modern age; hence the desire to have a mix of component and HDMI.
Any thoughts on the suitability of this unit for my needs, or other thoughts? I thought the popbox might do nicely, but right now I am guessing that Netflix will not happen there. I am also getting the sense that Roku is only for streaming; not file playback (please set me straight if I am wrong there).
Thanks.

Trying to play 2 different 1080p DTS movies (mkv) that are not playing properly...One of them, simply won't play the audio...The other, simply freezes up the WD and I have to eject, unplug and restart to unfreeze - but ultimately will not play at all
I do have an AV receiver hooked up that always allows me to play DTS mkv files so it's not a pass through issue
Anyone understand what the problem might be?

it may be the way the mkv was made - use mkvmerge, found in in mkvtoolnix

Did one one play karate kid and toy story 3 bluray disc backup(iso file) fine on the live plus or the live one??we tried at our friends place and it does fast forward it self and tries to change audio track from the 7.1 dts to the 5.1 track.

http://tehparadox.com/forum/f63/no-video-audio-both-when-playing-mkv-wdtv-1219646/The link provides a good description of the problem and a walkthrough of the (intentionally) laborious steps required to fix it using mkvmerge. An easier way is to download mkclean (http://www.matroska.org/downloads/mkclean.html) from Matroska and use the included file mkWDclean.exe to reconstitute the headers. It's a command line tool, or you can make a shortcut and drag-and-drop files onto it.
orion6192 11-15-10, 03:05 PM I have a question and hopefully someone out there has a solution. This is really bugging me.
I have TX-SR705 and hooked up to it is a WDTV Live (not the plus). Whenever I play a .mkv file with DTS I have no sound at all. AC-3 is fine with .mkv. I know there are issues with the WDTV Live and DTS - it cannot decode it; but shouldn't my TX-SR705 be able to decode the signal? Am I missing something obvious here?
Everything is hooked up HDMI. In this case it's WDTV ---> Onkyo TX-SR705 ---> TV.
Suggestions please?
Thanks....
eatmorepossum 11-15-10, 05:14 PM I'd like to use this to replace my kitchen computer... does it have a standard webbrowser?

Everything is hooked up HDMI. In this case it's WDTV ---> Onkyo TX-SR705 ---> TV.What I've read about the WDTV Live is that it will downmix DTS to either DD 5.1 or stereo but some users are having trouble with it. Have you tried both Digital and Stereo audio output settings? Also, if the Onkyo lets you associate an optical audio input with HDMI from the WDTV you might try the two cable approach.
Another possibility is that your DTS files may have audio header compression. I think the WDTV Live still doesn't support that although they may be working on a fix. The original WDTV, which I have, doesn't support it and never will. Run one of the problem files through mkWDclean (http://www.matroska.org/downloads/mkclean.html) to see if that helps.
cutthatcity 11-17-10, 02:53 PM this topic is for the original wdtv right? i already made a topic for this but i didnt see this.. ill just copy and paste my issue and hopefully you guys can help:
I'm having an issue with certain videos where the screen will just go black when you play it, and then when you go back any videos you click from then on will be a black screen with no audio or video. the only way to fix it i can figure out is to unplug and replug the wdtv and then everything works as long as i dont click that particular video. this has happened with a few video files and i cant figure out why. one thing ive noticed is it shows a mic and the file name at the top sometimes like its trying to play an audio file, so i tried to see if thats how its reading it but nothing shows up under music. this particular file is a 24 bit DTS audio 720p mkv. since im pretty sure its the audio thats the problem.
i am starting to wonder if my player is just going defective though. i have trouble with the remote where sometimes it will just not work unless i place it inches away from the player. then 5 minutes later it works fine. i would guess thats just a simple battery problem but its been doing that for like 8 months. its not a big deal since it rarely happens and like i said it stops happening too. very weird.. well anyways about the video problem just curious if anyone knows. the player does support 24 bit dts audio doesnt it? for me its more curious not just that the file wont play but that once it doesnt play the wdtv wont let me play anything else.
also i have what i believe is the most current firmware. im considering trying a third party firmware like b-rad's and seeing if this fixes it somehow but i dont see why it would... this is the normal wdtv hd player NOT the live (just to clarify). anyways, any help would be greatly appreciated.

it may be the header compression in MKVmerge from when the MKV is made - google mkclean and wdtv mkvmerge for tips
BoogieNY 11-19-10, 07:23 PM Just updated the firmware on the Live + and, for some reason, can't access my network shares, whereas they were easy-as-pie before.
Never did any registry tweaks or anything...I shared a folder on my PC, and the WDTV Live + saw it without issue or fuss. Now it keeps asking me for a username and password or says it can't access the network share.
I'm running a Win7-64bit box and have several shared drives. Not sure what happened or why, but this is sort of frustrating. Anyone have any solutions?
Thanks in advance.

PacMan2006 11-22-10, 06:10 PM I have a few quick questions about this player, because I feel like I'm reading conflicting information from other sites:
1) I want this media player so that I can play MTS files. But some people are saying that the player will only play one file at a time. Is this true? And is there any way to get the player to play all of your MTS files in one straight shot?
2) Follow-up...does the WD media player play MP2's, MP4's, and other video formats in succession, or does it just play one file and stop, too?
3) Lastly, I'm in the process of archiving all my old mini DV tapes to my computer, creating a digital library of home movies. I'm importing the footage into iMove (which transcodes to AIC and creates a MOV file).
Can I then transfer these MOV files to my hard drive, and play them on the WD media player? Or will the MOV files only play with the codec of MP4 or H.264? If it's the latter, that would mean I would have to export this footage out to another readable format, which would then lower my picture quality all the more.
Any way around this?
Thanks.

Not sure this will help, but try this;
User name = the name of your share (folder name)
password = leave this blank
I had a similar issue connecting to my ReadyNAS NV+ (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=19521051#post19521051), and that is what I did to get my WDTV+ 49_B fw to connect to the network share.

Good news, I just checked and my WDTV+ (49_B fw) plays my old MOV files and it also plays my MOD files (from a JVC Camcorder). That is so cool because my TVIX 6500 was never able to play the MOV files.
winston_wulf 11-28-10, 11:58 AM i have use my wdtv to watch youtube videos, and they worked fine. after the recent update, the audio from youtube is overdriven and distorted. just to make sure, i watched some of the same clips again. they were clear before the update, and are now unclear. i hesitated to accept the updates for fear of things like that. i wonder if that is a sign of an up coming pay to view service. if it is an honest mistake and not a precursor to rolling out a subscription service, im sure they will fix it in the next update.
Bengali 12-06-10, 03:16 PM Hi,
I have the HD media player. My main use is 2 ch. stereo.
I use the Toslink output to a DAC. Files are currently FLAC which
I'm going to go back and make them wave files from original cd's.
My question is how is the toslink output quality vs. a squeezebox.
Should I be looking for a different DAC then trying to find another USB
media player? I don't see many out there for usb hard drive playback.
I'm using a diy crystal dac with output line transformer, not low end.
I've tried several pre's and find the differences are subtle so I suspect
the media player. could be the DAC but unlikely.
Thanks.
The problem for stereo is, the player amplifies the audio signal +1dB (or +2dB, I'm not sure, it is some I've tested it) which introduces distortion.
I don't know if they fixed this in the last firmware but I doubt it ...
I also got audio distortion after upgrading a Live Plus from its original 1.03.29_B firmware to 1.04.10_B. Not just on YouTube; it affected .mkv files and probably everything with sound. Following advice on another site, I shut it off and unplugged it for :30. That fixed it for me.

Rip as an ISO (not vob flies) and all it will work.
One of the best purchases i've ever made.
I used to convert MKV's (and fail 30% of the time) to get them to PS3.
Now it plays natively and the sound is astonishing compared to Tversity stream. I'm in heaven.
If only there was a better way to get covers for AVI's than to click on "options" on every movie.
Find with the occasional download the audio is out of synch with the video.
No problem if watching on computer with the VLC player, can just use "Track Synchronization". Anyway to adjust the synch with the WDTV?

This what i would like to know also.
I was about to go grab myself a WD TV live, but i was wondering does the live-version has any improvement over picture quality or 1080p24 playpack smoothness etc.
I only would be needing it to play MKV and i dont really need those network capabilies, so the gen1 version would serve my purposes just aswell as long as picture/playback quality is as good as the WD TV live...
On the first gen you have to switch to 30/25/24 fps manually - frankly no automatic framerate sync.
Also the MKV playback capabilities are bad - max 4 reference frames in 1080.
My first gen WDTV sits in a closet and I have bought a slightly more expensive but far more better player (eGreat M-34A) and now I'm satisfied.
Maybe they improved it in the next generations?
But for me WDTV is a no go.
1Wiracocha1 11-04-11, 05:34 AM Wow! I purchased WDTV Live recently and it turned out that its usual interface could be modified to whatever you like using folder.jpg, _sheet.jpg, etc. files placed in folders with movie files. Really exiting news for me. I searched through the web and found some programs like 'Thumbgen' that could generate covers and place them into movie folders. Used it for a while but recently I found out that 'Movienizer' (movie cataloger that I use) is able to create such kind of catalogs for WDTV too with covers and backgrounds with movie info on them. Looks pretty fine, doesn't it?

Guys, I've had a little bit of problems with my unRaid server and now my WD TV won't see it.
Can someone tell me what the NETWORK settings should be and how do I find the right ip addresses n' stuff for it to work.
I thought I entered the right info but it says DNS info is not correct.
Any help and please, I'm a total network newbie so make it simple.
I do know how to do an ipconfig in the command prompt and I do know my servers ip address. All the stuff is connected to a D link DIR-655 but for some reason, I can't log onto the router from my browser at the ip it should have which is 192.168.0.1
Also, the server is on 192.168.254.3 for some reason, (didn't used to be, used to be 192.168.0.186 but we had problems getting my computer to see it so we let the router assign a new ip instead of a static one and this is what we get).
Thanks
George
brianley 11-06-11, 08:26 PM Sounds like your Dlink router has been reset. If you do a ipconfig, the address that is returned for the default gateway is the IP address of the Dlink (I'm guessing 192.168.254.1). Once you have the default gateway address, open a browser and enter that IP address - you should then get the login page of the dir-655.
As far as what the network settings should be, there is no 1 right answer. But all machines on your network should have the same subnet mask, the same default gateway (the ip address of your router) and the same DNS server (could also be the IP address of your router). If you're using DHCP then this should all be handled for you automatically.

Well, when I do an ipconfig, the default gateway is listed as 192.168.254.254 and when I try to look it up in the browser, I get the MODEM page for the Speedstream modem which is what Windstream here uses.
Thanks

Can you flash back?
bob
Hi, spongebob
Yes, you can flash back to a standard firmware whenever you like.
The alternative firmware needed for such customization is here:
http://b-rad.geg0r.de/index.php?dir=wdlxtv-live%2F
Download this one: 1.02.21_WDLXTV.COM_WDLXTV_LIVE-0.4.3.1.zip
Before the setup simply open and edit in Notepad the "wdtvlive.ver" file and change the version number there to any value higher than your current firmware version number. This is needed for your WDTV to start updating.
Save changes and proceed to the "S00custom-options" file. Open it as well and add these strings in the end:
config_tool -c SHOW_FILESIZE_SETTING=0
config_tool -c MSHEETMODE=sheet
config_tool -c VIDMSHEET=ON
config_tool -c GENMSHEET=ON
config_tool -c LISTMSHEET=ON
Now simply copy all modified and unmodified files of the firmware to the root of your flash stick\hard drive and plug it in WD TV.
After the firmware installation you can try creating a catalog with Movienizer (http://www.movienizer.com/). Add some movie, download info and covers for it in the program and click "Tools" - "Create covers for WDTV".
Now if you browse to the folder with video file in it you'll see the similar view like on my screenshot.
Google "b-rad firmware wd live plus" and enjoy the ride.

Does the b-rad firmware work on the old WD TV Live?
Does the b-rad firmware work on the old WD TV Live?
Well, I'll answer my own question...it does.
Now I'm looking for the best moviesheet generating program available.
Not too impressed with Thumbgen so far.
I will give Movienizer a try.
Question:
I was scanning my WDHD menus and it was able to pick up my Directv and all the programs I have on the DVR. Any chance that someday, I will be able to play that stuff with my WDHD?
My WDLIVE is going strong - haven't had one issue since I purchased it. Plays everything, and continuously updated. Great job WD.

My only concern is that it doesn't support RMVB format.
My only concern is that it doesn't support RMVB format.
I don't think I've seen that format for years now.
Most videos seem to be avi, mkv or mp4
Comp1demon 01-04-12, 05:35 PM I have the new WD LIVE player - not the old WD live plus - The most recent model with lip sync support and I love it.
My only question is this. I have the unit HDMI to my receiver and then from receiver to my TV and it plays just fine, but I notice that none of my rips including rips with Master HD audio will display properly on the receiver. I have a Yamaha v867 and when I put on a MKV or other file it just says PCM, and then I can only select Neo 6 channel or Dolby presets. I notice that even my Xbox on the menu screen shows DolbyD on the receiver when I turn it on and switches to other codecs when they are there automatically.
So how do I get the WD live or the receiver to auto recognize the audio from the file I am using? all my MKV's either have Master HD audio or DTS or Dolby Digital and I never get those on my receiver.
Thanks in advance guys.
Figured it out.... nevermind
