We added an extra exhaust as well as are re-doing the entire outer shell.
I can already tell that I am going to have to insulate in between the particle board and the 2X4's that make up the hush box after just taking my fist and hitting the structure. My subs are going to tear that thing apart.
Hence my dilema. I need to make sure that the box remains to a point of being able to take it apart from time to time for maintenance so I'm pondering a few ideas in order to maintain the ability over time to take it apart and still retain the structure in regards to vibration from the subs.
The one thing that makes me EXTREMELY happy is the projectors are now over TWICE AS QUIET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SWEET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

Say Cliff,
At Arli's meet Ken was talking about a positive pressure duct (from the ceiling) into the hush box along with the exhaust duct(s).
I know this would be a pain but you might be able to seal the lenses around the front of the hush. It almost seems that with that you might be able to get an even lower sound floor in your HT???
Not that I've built one of these but I thought I'd mention it.

How did you cut the holes for the lenses?
Painting it black?

That is the first choice, but I'm not completely sure yet.
Suggestions? :)

I believe we used Melamine board. Still much to do but I love how the face looks. :)

Yeah, I thought about that, but if I were to seal it, I'm not sure any type of glass or plastic covering would be 100 percent effective to the actual projected image. I was checking last night and it's pulling air very nicely through the front now after adding the second exhaust. I'm pulling probably another 700 CFM on top of what I had before now.
The temperature dropped about 14 degrees from before. :)

yborstrip 11-02-08, 03:05 PM I'd hit it.
Don_Kellogg 11-02-08, 05:48 PM Cliff you can go with Edmunds glass no worries I used this on my RS1. Many people use it it has a special coating. Some people have even used two panes to help block noise.
I like the look of the hush box, it really finishes the room off nicely. Did you address the temperature stability in there? Did you do a measurement on the sound how many DB did it drop?

Cliff,
I notice the holes are about the same size as the lenes.
How far in front of the lens is the cut out.
I'm assuming you are having no issues with the holes being that tight?
Anthony
Gino AUS 11-02-08, 09:59 PM Looks great Cliff and Arli! Nice job. How far is the cutout to the lenses? I hope you don't get any light reflecting from the inside of the cutout back into the lens.

Yes, it does look much better doesn't it? Arli's pretty damn good. :D;)
Props to him for sure.
We do have a few more issues to work on, but I think in the end, I will be happy. :)

Dude, you crack me up. When's Ken visiting you?
I'm looking foward to you ANNOUNCING a MEET SOON!

Thanks big dog!
The temp is down pretty good, but the temp of the room is also a factor. If it's hot in the room, it's going to be hotter in the hush box so that will be an issue I'll have to face in the future.
As far as the sound, easily over half cut down. I didn't actually measure it yet, but it's way down. You can still hear my babies humming, but I'm VERY happy with the result. ;)
How's the road treating you bro?

Anthony,
The holes are 6 inches and the lenses are 5 1/2 inches and the cutout is just in front of the lenses.
No issues to speak of and the smaller foot print is also pulling air much harder now vs. before. The inlet pressure is much better.

Yeah, Arli did a great job huh?;)
So far so good on everything I've watched. I'm keeping a good eye on that one, but I also plan on doing the center area in black velveteen including the area around the lense.
The cool part is this is kind of a "rough" draft. We can modify it a bit if needed. I was checking the lense and we can move that board back to the lense if needed.
Hopefully we'll be chatting on the phone soon. :)
Cliff
Cliff,
Thanks for posting the pics. I've been looking at what I'm going to do with the subject of the hush box and now I think I've seen the front opening that I can live with.
Based on the design as it is right now, do you think that the front could be removed if designed with industrial velcro strips? The only reason I would want this is for is to gain access to the front of the pj (G70).
BTW...that thing is looking great!!!
Tom

Things are going well I actually got to come home this weekend. But I'm back across the pond this week. My son had a fever, we found out he's sensitive to a antibotic. Nothing worse than a sick child, he's fine but sure makes you feel helpless.
Did you put a thermal switch in there to speed up the fans when the temp rises? I had one of those in my hush box. As for the front of the hush box are you going to treat the face with Lin RC and cover with fabric? I know we didn't do any measurements but that's most likely a second reflection point. Next time time Ken makes it to the house I'd have him do some measurements. As you know simple treatments to a room can make massive improvements. I don't remember doing a sweep at that location, it might excite a room mode.
Yeah, I thought about that, but if I were to seal it, I'm not sure any type of glass or plastic covering would be 100 percent effective to the actual projected image.I use rubber sealed lens openings, works great.

My fault big dog! I thought you were talking about glass in front of the lenses. Duh!!!!!!! :)
I'm starting to like that lense throught the front more and more.
Might have to ask Arli to come help me "mod" her up. :D

skylooker1 11-03-08, 10:37 PM Cliff,
What did you guys use for an exhaust fan? How many cfm? Did you duct out of the house or just to the outside of the theater room?

We used two 8" 500cfm duct fans on 6" pipe (flex). Right now, it's heating the rest of the basement very well. :D
I've got the material to run outside of the house but Arli and I will be changing that design.
Can you believe that thing is heating my entire basement (1200 square feet)?
I think I just found and alternative heating option for my house!!!!!!!!!:D:eek::D

Yeah, but the cost (6 LUGS) LUG/BTU cost is kinda high.
I'm still tossing some ideas around for my setup.

Oh hell yeah. No doubt about it. I won't get into details, but anyone with a theater knows that it costs to use. :)
Do I smell another Runco in your future?
;)
Don_Kellogg 11-04-08, 02:30 AM I need to off grid my theater ;) hmm... Michigan offers tax ... nah I can't handle another project right now.
skylooker1 11-04-08, 06:26 AM Don,
Have you cut anything with that cnc yet?
I'm almost ready to resume mine. Have the building up and dried in, electric 90%, sheeted all the inside walls with osb. Just waiting for some more time to get things done.
Don_Kellogg 11-04-08, 08:19 AM I've been on the road since I posted those photos... Several places around the US but mostly across the pond. I've got the mechanical part done just need to build and hook up the controller. Hoping to do it soon if the travel slows. Maybe some subs..
ooo ooo i want to play with your cnc router... muhhhhh more subs
Don_Kellogg 11-04-08, 08:50 AM Ahh yeah wonder twin powers activate...

bbfarmht 11-04-08, 07:34 PM Nice, I like the new grill.:D
You could always use a dense foam like the marquees use to seal the front of the opening.
wallace1234 11-04-08, 08:32 PM Cliff,
I'm still wondering about the amount of light being reflected or deflected if the holes in the front cover are too far way from the actual lens.
Time for a ht meet!
wallace
skylooker1 11-04-08, 08:44 PM Arli could always use a large roundover bit on the openings like he uses on the flared ports of his subs.
bbfarmht 11-04-08, 09:19 PM Or you could use midget strippers in black velvet!!
