View Full Version : Will netflix ever come to PS3?
Degenerazn 11-02-08, 12:05 PM As the title says, are there any plans to bring netflix to PS3? I'm in the market for a second Blu Ray player for our theater room and of course, a PS3 is the best value. (And I need an excuse to buy that gun metal grey PS3). Now netflix is being integrated into Xbox360 next month, will PS3 do the same? And I want to be able to stream without the use of any software like PlayOn.
mproper 11-02-08, 12:15 PM a) If there was plans, you'd have heard about it. That's not to say it might not come eventually, but if there has been no official news.
b) PlayOn works great. No HD though.
So I guess you can wait for it to possibly come "natively" in some far off future date, or just use PlayOn for a measely $30 (which not only includes Netflix, but Hulu as well...and CBS and Youtube and ESPN if you care about those). Or buy a 360 or Roku Box or one of the other players it's been announced for.
Honestly, if you don't have a 360 and want NF streaming, PlayOn is a deal and half. Possibly a deal and three-quarters. I have a 360, but am still buying PlayOn for Hulu and the other streaming options. Plus PlayOn works on the PS3, 360, and my DirecTV boxes pick it up as well (I have a DTV box on every TV, but a PS3 and 360 on only 1)
confidenceman 11-02-08, 12:21 PM I'm sure it's something that both Netflix and Sony would want, but these things take time (especially for Sony). There are currently no active announcements or rumors.
But... since Netflix currently has the most organized and robust combination of online service, subscription infrastructure, and available titles, if Sony's ever going to do any sort of subscription-based streaming, it'd probably happen through Netflix.
Maybe we'll see something when Home finally launches (in 2015)?
Degenerazn 11-02-08, 12:23 PM PlayOn is a great software, when it works. I had so much trouble with it last night and quality isn't all that great IMO. I have a 360, I actually have two. But if I wanted to have netflix on both, I'd have to pay for another Gold Account. I'm tempted to buy one of the LG or Samsung netflix ready players because atleast they can play TruHD.
Just so you know, the Netflix streaming is not going to be available next month when the new Dashboard launches on the 360. It was a planned feature that has been pushed back; since after the delay they confirmed HD streaming, I'm guessing that has a lot to do with it.

The shared Netflix viewing with other members has been pushed back, but regular Netlflix viewing is a go at launch.
MechaPoitier 11-03-08, 08:29 AM If Blockbuster was smart, they would offer a similar service for the PS3 that Netflix is offering for the 360. Since Netlfix made its debut, Blockbuster has been struggling to compete because they are always a step behind. By the time they got their own mail based movie rental service going Netflix was already dominating the market (and still is). The way things are going, by the time they even begin to offer streaming movies to your PC it'll be way too late. If they could get moving and strike a deal with Sony and get an online streaming service set up for the PS3 it would go a long way to making them competitive again. I feel like most PS3 owners who currently have Netflix subscriptions would switch over to Blockbuster so that they could utilize the functionality and owners who were on the fence between Netflix and Blockbuster would finally have a definitive reason to choose Blockbuster over Netflix.

Agreed... I have nothing but trouble with playon with both the 360 and ps3. and that doesnt even factor in its horrible ui (but its limited to the 360/ps3) and the lack of the native ff/rw as well as no HD and maybe never getting the HD version going as well as the silverlight questions.

Agreed 100%. I use Blockbuster Online for their in-store exchange program. I think it would be very wise of them to do this for PS3. My brother works for Blockbuster and I keep telling him to make it happen. (although not really his decision. lol) Guess we'll wait and see.
obsid1an 11-03-08, 10:58 AM It's unlikely to happen for a simple reason, PSN is free. Notice how this only works for gold account holders. This likely means netflix is charging a royalty fee for this service (which in turn is the media holders charging a royalty fee). Sony isn't just going to eat this expense.

Any media holder fees would be covered via the user's Netflix account. Outside of the initial development for expanding the service to a new platform, which the platform holder would likely eat, there shouldn't be any additional fees.
That initial development cost may be why MS is only allowing Gold Account holders to use the service. It could just as easily be a way for them to bolster the value of the Gold Account as well.

Yeah I sent an email into blockbuster about it. Then I see they just opened stores in TX where you can play all the consoles on 52 inch TVs. Huge waste of money I think. Then need to get movies streaming on the PS3 and game rentals for online. If they don't they will go down just like Circuit City is.

Ooof; thanks for the clarification. :)

You and 7 other friends can watch Netflix movies online together as long as you all have a gold account and subscribe to the Netflix service.
frank_f 11-03-08, 04:29 PM Unless HD content is offered from netflix to PS3, I will never subscribe. I would sooner watch Black and White TV on a 13" tube TV over a rabit ear antennia before I would stream SD content to my flat panel LCD.
Just one man's opinion.

Yeah, this is what I said when they first announced the 360 streaming. Luckily, they've since announced HD streaming, which is pretty cool.
