In process of designing theater (and addition) I have come to the point of thinking about sound isolation. While I have received many ideas from the forum, I think I need some clarification.
I am looking at a 2 story addition to my house, cinder block on the bottom, 2x6 framing on top exterior. This is a new structure, where the only entrance to the main house will be through a doorway on the 1st floor. Bottom floor will contain an exercise room, office, and full bathroom. These may at a later date be bedrooms (depending on family expansion!). The upstairs will have theater, gameroom, and half bath.
So I am trying to determine what needs to be incorporated into the construction phase - the two contractors I have met with didnt' really know anything about isolation:
1) For the 3 2x6-framed exterior walls, I was thinking 1/2 drywall, green glue, then 1/2 drywall. For the wall separating the theater and game room (staggered 2x4), .5 drywall/Green Glue/.5 drywall on theater side, .5 drywall on gameroom side.
2) Theater floor isolation: subfloor, glued Acoustic Mat, subfloor (OSB/Plywood? thicknesses?).
3) Not sure about RSIC clips, as I am not sure if they would be necessary? (3 walls are exterior 2x6 framing, over cinderblock), other wall is staggered 2x4
4) Must the room framing be isolated from trusses (there will only be insulation and roof above)
5) Should ceiling be Green Glued, or would standard 1/2, or 5/8 drywall be OK?
6) Is there anything I should worry about on the first floor during construction? I was just thinking about filling the joist spacing under the theater with fiberglass insulation.
7) I will also have a fake front wall for screen, and about a 3-4 ft wide room behind back wall for equipment. - don't really care if sound gets in there.
Thanks!
