I am replacing a Directv HD receiver with a HD-DVR. There is only one cable coming out of the wall. In order to be able to use both tuners can I just put a splitter in the cable? Or is the solution more complicated (dropping a second cable)?
You'll need a separate cable from the sat dish distribution system.
If you can't pull in a second cable, a SWM8 would allow you to use only one cable. The second cable is definitely much less expensive, though.

Excuse my ignorance, but what the heck is SWM8?
I'll probably have to pay a service charge to pull a second cable. Oh, well.
Thanks guys

A SWM8 is a piece of equipment that makes it so that only 1 cable is required at the outlet, including for DVRs. Check it out (http://www.swm8.com/).

If you are having Directv install the replacement receiver, they should take care of the second pull unless it's a complicated location to get to.
