View Full Version : keyboard question
calvinb 11-03-08, 03:13 PM Please help a (soon to be newcomer) to the PS3. I'll be buying a PS3 soon. Primary uses will be gaming for the kids, Blu-ray for kids and adults, and also internet use. Internet use will be somewhat limited but I am looking to purchase the Logitech keyboard. I'm still undecided on what particular PS3 to get. I believe I could find the MGS 80G version if I looked hard enough (or paid enough). For internet use, does it matter what model console I purchase? Does the "standard" 80G that is widely available support the keyboard, 2 controllers, etc? Does it have enough inputs USB, etc? Should I try hard to find the BC-compatible 80G version? Thanks for any / all replies.
Internet browsing will be the same on all the systems (by same, I mean "not very great"). The only thing to keep in mind is that non-80gb systems only have 2 USB ports, so you might want to buy a hub; otherwise you could be swapping a lot. I have 4 USB ports and I still don't think it's enough; two charger cables I wish Sony had kept the rear USB ports from the original plans.
calvinb 11-03-08, 03:49 PM much thanks. So if I've got both wireless controllers hooked up, I can still use the keyboard, right? Or do I need more than 2 USB ports? I'm still confused...

clarification: the older 80gb PS3 that comes with Metal Gear Solid 4 has 4 USB ports, but the newer 80gb PS3 with no game, that's more widely available only has 2 USB ports.

you'll only hook up the wireless controllers to USB when you need to charge. two usb ports would be just fine in your scenario.
Sunkist 11-03-08, 05:22 PM If you get a bluetooth keyboard then you don't need to worry about the USB ports, and you have a much longer range, I tried a standard wireless keyboard and it wouldn't reach the 9-10 feet to my couch. Luckly I also had a bluetooth keyboard mouse laying around which works fine but since the browser is not that great I just pieced a computer together and hooked it up to my TV instead, way more useful.
TornadoTJ 11-03-08, 05:24 PM I personally don't like surfing on the PS3. The browser stinks. Luckily, I have an HTPC in the same space. I've tried and tried to use the PS3, but it's simply incompatible with too many websites and just doesn't work right on others.
lburgguy 11-06-08, 09:25 AM I bought the Gyration wireless mouse/keyboard for my pc and voila, it works for the PS3 beautifully!

You can get it on Ebay for about half that.
frank_f 11-06-08, 09:31 AM The internet browser sticks. About the only thing any good on it is YouTube. Instead of getting a wireless keyboard, I would wait until later this month when Sony releases the new keypad that clips onto the controller and get that one. A full PC style keyboard is going to be a complete waste (and very big and clumbsy).

The internet browser sticks.
It would stick less if you went to less porn sites! :p
*high fives the internet*

lol.
If you plan on using it for full web browsing, which can be done, but some sites won't work properly, then the thumb style keyboard might be a pain.
I am using the Mad Katz thumb keyboard (detached from the controller) for messaging, but if I need to use the web, I plug in the full size USB keyboard.
I would suggest getting the Logitech Cordless Mediaboard Pro if you're going to do full web browsing. It's Bluetooth so you don't have to worry about using another USB port. And I agree, sometimes even 4 USB ports isn't enough.

Are you going to be playing PS2 games on it? Are you going to be popping in SD Memory cards from your camera?
If so, I suggest trying to find an 80 Gig MGS PS3 so you have the 4 USBs, PS2 compatibility and USB ports.
If not, you can just get a USB hub.
Oh my, that is one sexy keyboard.
TornadoTJ 11-06-08, 03:13 PM I have that same keyboard, and it does not do anything to make up for the PS3's lousy browser.

Yeah, but I can use it on my HTPC without clogging up a USB port.

I didn't say it did. I just said it's more convenient if you're going to use it for full web browsing.
TornadoTJ 11-06-08, 03:51 PM Yeah, but I can use it on my HTPC without clogging up a USB port.
that it is good for. That's how I ended up using it when I realized the PS3 browser was so bad. I love the range and the fact it has the mousepad built in.
Sinistar83 11-06-08, 09:15 PM I have a generic USB keyboard I use with extension cable but for some reason it will stop working after a while (like I use it in LittleBigPlanet) ten after a stage or two it stops responding and I have to unplug and plug it back in in order for it to work again.
