Got the TV from as friend who was having trouble with picture being very grainy. Took it to my house, set it down on floor and had perfect picture for over a week! I moved the set and now have a screen with 5 sets of 5 vertical bars. Behind the vertical lines I get a background that goes from black to green (see picture). The audio comes perfect and I can see some of the picture underneath the mess. Plugging in the DVD player gets the same effect. Also, the menu comes up perfect (see picture). Any ideas, I would think that something is loose due to the picture going from bad to perfect back to bad. No noises from fans or color wheel. Thanks

I found the below via google search. Can anyone here confirm this might be the issue?

Sorry to hear about your TV. When a samsung has a freezing picture, strange patterns or blocks on digital (HD) and standard channels, the primary culprit is the DMD board.

Usually replacing the DMD board is not a viable option unless you have an extended warranty and don't have to do it yourself.

The DMD boards run between $400-$1000
and are no picnic to change out.

I am sorry it is not better news, but you can be sure it is accurate.

The service manual states that vertical lines, horizontal lines or a honeycomb pattern are dmd board failure, so the quote you show could certainly be correct.

In the OP's statement he says the menu comes up perfect, which might indicate something different in his case. If nothing comes up correctly, then the dmd board is the fault, but a clear menu might point to something else in his case.

Does your menu come up OK also? Or are the lines always present.

My menu comes up "clean" also. My screens look exactly like his do.

Ok, I unplugged the TV from my APC-350 Ups and connected it to another UPS-550 and all my problems went away. No green banding etc.

Must have been the power supply on the UPS going bad pushing interference into the TV? All that is on the UPS is the tv, nothing else.

I think I may had dodged the DMD issue for now and saved over $1,000 by not purchasing a ViZio 47" LCD unnecessarily. :)

Seems it wasn't UPS. Pulling the power on the Tv fixed the problem for many hours last night. This morning, it is back to its green checkerboard issue.

This morning pulling the power from back of the unit gives me a temp 100% clear screen, then it started back again.

Is this still a DMD board issue? Menus are clear.

You should call Samsung Tech. Support. They may know if you can still see the menu screen if the dmd board is going out. It's possible, as the menu screen is probably on an imbedded chip independent of the digital board. It's an easy question for a tech to know and all things are pointing to the dmd board.

If menus are clear, it's more likely the analog ($170) or digital main board ($470). So exactly which inputs are affected? Just component and composite means analog, but if dvi/hdmi are affected then digital.

sigh... all inputs. I am buying a Vizio 47" LCD from BJ's Wholesale club for about $1,000.00. Just not worth fixing this thing since I can't do the work myself. The "site visit" fee is $250.00 plus parts on whatever might be the issue. If it isn't DMD, just a matter of time before the DMD goes out.

No more Samsung for me. :)

Hey, sorry to bump but I was looking for help on our TV and came across this thread.

Our TV has been doing the exact same thing and even the HDMI port had a little line on the screen. Well in a blind effort, we took an expensive power strip and plugged the TV directly into it, plugged it into a wall and, every signal worked absolutely perfectly. We couldn't believe it.

Well we then moved the TV to where we wanted it and plugged everything back in and the problem is back once again. We are leaving everything unplugged right now and are going to try again tomorrow but if it doesn't fix it, what could be the problem?
