View Full Version : Need to simulate simultaneous HDMI and optical audio out from PS3

I'm currently setting up my home theater system so it will simultaneously output to the projector, an LCD and a Plasma TV. This allows parents to take their misbehaving kids out of the theater room but continue to watch the movie on the LCD or Plasma in different rooms of the house.

I'm using a PS3 as my DVD player and I have HDMI cables to the projector, plasma and LCD. I have an HDMI splitter box (monoprice) and plan on running the PS3 to the splitter box and from the splitter to all the display devices via the HDMI cables.

All of this would work great accept for one small problem. The PS3 will not simultaneously output audio via HDMI and optical. My home theater receiver (Onkyo HT-R530) needs optical (has no HDMI input) and the Plasma and LCD need the audio over HDMI.

I have two possible solutions:

1) Send audio out the PS3 via HDMI and buy an HDFury2 and hang it off the HDMI splitter and use the HDFury2 only for the optical audio (which I would feed back into my home theater receiver).

2) Buy a more updated Onkyo receiver that has HDMI inputs. I think I could get one for close to the same price as the HDFury2 ($249)

Does anybody have any other options? Which of these would be better?

Thanks,

Ryan

Nope. Option 2 sounds best to me.
