Well, anyone that plays a lot of shooters must be happy at this time of the year. In the last few weeks and even this week, the list of shooters released are:

Far Cry 2
SOCOM
Gears of War 2
Resistance 2
James Bond

and this doesn't include games that you might be currently playing like Warhawk.

My question is, who is planning on purchasing a few of these newly released shooters? GOW2 and Resistance 2 are released this week alone. I wouldn't mind picking up both, but don't know if I have the time.

Curious to see who is picking up which shooters.

FYI: And for the record, this isn't a trap to start a flame war on consoles. Most of us it seems own both consoles and I find that posting in the PS3 forum gets better results than the other forum which is why I posted here.
I wasn't planning on GOW2 but after reading the review at IGN, I got a little interested as I played GOW1 but didn't finish it which is why I am not sure which to get this week.

Resistance 2 is the answer. Epic campaign and kickass co-op and vs MP. The rest can wait.

I am getting GOW2 and Resistance2. Let the slaughter begin. Bought the 360 two years ago and the ps3 this June. By the way Gears2 is getting higher review numbers but Resistance2 will be just as good. There is a definite bias aganist the ps3 in the gaming media. Since I own both, my opinion is, they are about the same except for the relialibilty issues with the 360.

GoW1 was the sole reason why I bought a 360 on the first day the game came out. GoW2 will be the reason why I turn on my 360 for the first time in months to play a game LOL ... can't wait. I never got into R1. However, I am interested in the coop with my friends, but as of right now, it is not a day 1 purchase unlike GoW2.
And I already own Far Cry 2 not including the other games I'm currently into (Dead Space, CoD4, etc.)

IMO the Resistance story is more mature like it's written by adults and for adults. Gears has always been an over the top cliche story and chars, like they are appealing to the 360 base of 14-18 year olds. R2's MP will have much longer legs too with the xp based system with co-op.

I loved the single player campaign in Gears 2. Really fun stuff.

I'm looking forward to playing Resistance tomorrow.

Bond was fun but very short (took me about 6 or 7 hours). Good rental in a month or two when you want a diversion.

I'm loving SOCOM, and I'm getting Resistance 2 since my buddies really enjoy the split-screen online co-op.

Now i think you are insulting a lot of 'mature (as in older)' gamers who truely enjoy Gears:o. Gears is written by adults as well, and with an 'M' rating is directed to adults as well. I would almost venture to say that there are/have been more adults that play GoW than Resistance. There is one thing that you have to remember, and that is R2 has to compete with every current and future FPS (from CoD4, to Halo 3, to R6V, GRAW, Team Fortess2, Bioshock (it is a FPS), etc along with the long list of others upcoming (CoD:WaW, and KZ2). It has to present something fundamentally different to keep players captivated. It has an OK story, but didn't we already have a discussion about video game books a while ago? I think R2 is going to be a good game, better than the predecessor, but within 6 months (as KZ2 comes out in 4 months) and definately in 12 months (when CoD6 comes out) it will be a distant memory.

GoW is still one of the top 3-4 games played still after 2 years. It really is a different game (3rd person vs 1st, with cover mechanics) with almost nothing to compete against it. The game had a no better (or worse) story than Resistance (at least the cutscenes were more than a simple narration) and almost seemless during loading points. Not everyone is going to like Gears, as it does take things to the extreme, with the ridiculous amount of violence, gore, body parts flying, swearing, the weapons (chainsaws in a sci fi game, lol) laughable cliches ('come ride the cole train') and all of this is of course 'so bad' but it is also one of those things that you can just sit back and laugh about (isn't that what video games are about, laughable mindless entertainment?). Nothing so far beats the comradery when playing with freinds, and against friends as the close quarter combat in Gears really creates its own ambiance. The taunting amonst the 'dead people' the camera view of your teammates when you are dead to see what they are doing and how they are doing it etc. I don't play Gears every day but almost seems that way at times, and I (along with millions of people) keep comming back for more punishment no matter how bad we 'suck'.

To the OP, to be perfectly honest, unless you play with a bunch of friends, most shooters can become frustrating. If you played the 1st Gears, but did not play co-op campaign, then you really are missing a good time. Similarly if you played multiplayer by yourself, it is really easy to get lost. Playing with friends really makes the experience much better. If you really did not like the 1st Gears, then I really think you will not like the 2nd either. Try playing the 1st one again, and determine why you never finished the game.

For the record, I am (will) pick up the following shooters:

GoW2
CoD:WaW
Left 4 Dead

Resistance 2 (but likely when I finish the above games)
Quantum Of Solace (after the reviews come out and available for less than $30)
Far Cry 2 (I am still on the fence, I do not have time to play every shooter)

And this is on top of all the other outstanding games that just came out (fable 2, Fallout 3, and I am still on the fence about LBP).

I'm sorry, but the story and character in Gears 1 were laughable at best. From what I read the story gets even worse and the violence gets even more over the top. They are saying it's the bloodiest game made and the pre-release hype has been about different way of chainsaw killing opponents. If that isn't appealing to a young crowd then what is? Resistance is more like Half-life, a more cerebral shooter.

Thanks for the feedback so far. The only reason that it didn't get finished is that there were a lot of other games that came out and I just never got around to it. Unfortunately, there are just too many good games that come out during this time frame and I just seem not to have enough time to play. Right now I am playing about 4 different games and can't get any finished due to time. I did promise myself I would finish Dead Space by the end of this weekend.

I am definitely getting R2 as I love the multi-player, and for the most part most of my friends don't play video games, so when I play multi-player it is usually a random game or with one of the kids.

Gears seems that it has a really cool multi-player called Hoard (I think), which is why I wouldn't mind picking it up.

Unfortunately, on order is:

Rock Band 2
Guitar Hero World Tour
Mortal Kombat vs DC
Call of Duty
Valkyrie Chronicles (probably a rent)

and my gaming time is limited to about 2 - 3 hours a night most nights, when I am not watching movies.

Here's hoping to finding more time to play. I guess the good thing is that having a good game library means that I always have something to play.

Farcry 2 will be a rental for me.

Resistance 2 will be a buy, Call of Duty 5 will be a buy also. socom will be a buy in a few weeks after a few updates and patches make the game polished.

+1 totally agree.

It's like comparing the movies, Never back down and Redbelt. Of course there will be certain people that cannot distinguish the difference between the two.

Oh and another vote for Resistance 2. I will be renting Gears2, oh try not don't use the acronym GOW on a playstation forum, that is reserved for a more lorded game.
