I was just reading the Zulu thread and someone mentioned that The Ipcress File (one of my favorites) is due shortly on Bluray in the UK. Looks like Zulu is region free, but does anyone know about Ipcress?

It's keeping Zulu company in my Amazon cart until I can confirm...

I contacted Amazon UK about this title and all they could tell me was that it was PAL , and Region 2. Obviously they had no idea about the Blu-ray coding.
The releasing company is ITV, which released may Region Free Blu-rays like
Capricorn One, Escape to Athena, The eagle has Landed, etc.
Are you sure ZULU is Region Free?. It is a Paramount release!
Let me know please!

My copy showed up yesterday, plays fine on a US PS3. I'll watch it over the Thanksgiving holiday and post my impressions. Ah, nice to have some great older movies to watch in HD.

ITV usually does a REALLY good job with their Blu-Rays. I definitely want the Ipcress file.... Though I'm SO BROKE right now. Too many movies, too much Christmas to worry about, haha.

It does play back in US made PS3s? Isn't it PAL? I have had trouble playing back PAL video before on my PS3 (very frustrating) and am nervous about importing this and having it not work. I really want it though, a long favorite of mine.

Is there some sort of mod to make PS3 play back PAL video?

I started watching it a week or two ago, but wasn't quite in the mood to watch the whole thing. Played fine. Probably get back to it in the next few days...

HD material on Blu-ray is not in the PAL format, so no worries there for most film content. And no, there is no hack for a Region A PS3 to play PAL material.

any blu-ray PAL problem is related to sd PAL encoded trailers and special feature content that will refuse to play on region a players that cannot play PAL.
also, some menus are in PAL, and also can create havoc being able to access the main feature.
the main movie is never the issue.
all ITV bds have been region free so far.

OK people who have 'The Ipcress File' BD -- how does it look and sound? Is it a worthy upgrade from the DVD?

I went ahead and watched it tonight. It looks (saw no film wear/tear at all, just good old fashioned film grain, colors seemed right, nothing significant wrt digitization artifacts) and sounds fine (although I found the theme music to be a bit annoying[ly repetitive]).

Don't have a DVD (the U.S. one is long out of print, and I procrastinated on the imports long enough that this blu-ray came along just about the same time I was yet again contemplating getting it on one of the DVDs, so decided to wait for the blu-ray), so can't say. Given the film is over 40 years old, looks about like I would have expected a high definition transfer would look of a film from that timeframe. [Not having watched the Godfather set yet, I would guess perhaps it looks similar.]

Plus no PAL speedup, given the imports were likely problematic that way. And it's widescreen, which is part of the reason I never jumped on the imports, as it seemed unclear regarding whether they were full screen, widescreen, anamorphic, not done very well, etc. Not much in the way of supplements (a photo gallery and the original trailer is all).

Thanks, doesn't sound at all bad to me :)! The film was always a great story and solid characters (IMO). It sounds like they just delivered it as it is -- I'm not sure I'd want anything different from that! I'd like better color presentation and overall picture quality improvement relative to SD DVD, but nothing earthshaking!

I watched it yesterday night and was really disappointed by the PQ (and, in a much lesser measure, the AQ). On the positive side, there does not seem to be any intrusive DNR or EE. But the PQ looked very poor to me, with extremely poor shadow detail, very washed out colors (it that intentional?) and pervasive softness. It is definitely better than a DVD picture, but I would not recommend buying the BD. The movie itself, on the other hand, feels as new or, should I say, much better than most new movies!

The BD is easily the best I've ever seen this film look and sound, so if you're a genuine fan of the film, then I recommend it. However, if you're not already a fan, then you might judge it relative to the popular expectations associated with BD, rather than relative to the actual film itself. For you, I recommend renting it first -- if you're satisfied, then buy it :)!

I've watched the BD several times now -- excellent :)!

I agree that this is probably the best home video presentation the movie ever had. I was just expecting more. Put differently: I am convinced that the PQ (and AQ) would have been better, had this been a Criterion release.

Since I'm not in a position to compare against a quality master, I'm in no position to comment on how near or far it is from the original celluloid. However, I'm sure that if Criterion did release it, it would have cost me much more :)! Still, I love the BD :)!

FWIW -- I find the overall image to be artistically consistent with previous video releases, however, it's clearly delivering far more than any previous version I've ever seen in both sound and image. It may not be "up to par" as some say as they compare with other films on BD, but then again, those are different films -- doesn't really make much sense to compare.
