View Full Version : HDMI 1.2 lossless sound?? xtremefit 11-05-08, 10:16 PM Hey guys, I was wondering if you get lossless sound with HDMI 1.2? Or do you need 1.3? Thanks Richard Paul 11-06-08, 04:24 AM Yes, and even HDMI 1.0 supported up to 8 channel PCM audio at 24-bits and 192-kHz. What HDMI 1.3 adds is the ability to bitstream Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA. xtremefit 11-06-08, 06:14 AM Yes, and even HDMI 1.0 supported up to 8 channel PCM audio at 24-bits and 192-kHz. So my question is, when I get a blu-ray, will I be missing out on anything? Sorry, if I didn't exactly understand your reply. crutschow 11-06-08, 12:28 PM Thanks, ok I checked the manual of my receiver and it states that it can only playback DD PCM 32KHZ TO 96 KHZ. Sorry, if I didn't exactly understand your reply. You either have to get a receiver that decodes Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA lossless audio, or let the blu-ray player decode the audio and use it's audio analog outputs to your receiver. Assuming the blu-ray player decodes the lossless audio, the sound should be the same either way. Have the BR player decode the HD audio formats and output them as MPCM over HDMI. crutschow 11-06-08, 02:03 PM There's another way. I have the Pioneer Elite 81TXV, which I'm real happy witch I've had for not even a year and I don't feel like upgrading just for that. crutschow 11-06-08, 02:14 PM Unfortunately, it seems with anything electronic, no matter when you buy, it's obsolete in 6 months. So my question is, when I get a blu-ray, will I be missing out on anything? As long as the Blu-ray player can decode Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA the answer would be no. Here is list of Blu-ray players (http://www.blu-ray.com/players/compare.php) and what they can decode. For example the Panasonic DMP-BD35, PS3, Samsung BD-P2550, and Sony BDP-S350 are capable of decoding both Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA. But you still have to have a receiver that decodes lossless MPCM which, I believe, requires a receiver with HDMI 1.3 capability.PCM audio (also called LPCM and MPCM) is uncompressed and has been supported since HDMI 1.0 and there are several Blu-ray players that can decode Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA and output it over HDMI as PCM audio. I have the Pioneer Elite 81TXV, which I'm real happy witch I've had for not even a year and I don't feel like upgrading just for that. From what I have read (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showpost.php?p=9327125&postcount=50) that AV receiver can accept PCM audio over HDMI. Kal Rubinson 11-06-08, 07:43 PM But you still have to have a receiver that decodes lossless MPCM which, I believe, requires a receiver with HDMI 1.3 capability.Nope. First, MPCM is always lossless in this field. Second, as Richard Paul stated in the second post in this thread said, "Yes, and even HDMI 1.0 supported up to 8 channel PCM audio at 24-bits and 192-kHz." xtremefit 11-07-08, 10:11 AM Thanks for your help guys. So I guess I'm good to go with this receiver then? All I need is to make sure my future Blu-Ray can Decode Dolby HD. |
