View Full Version : The majors should be embarassed, The Big White BD is the funniest BD out for $12.99

The major studios should be embarassed that the funniest film I've seen this year, from Echo Bridge, cost me $12.99 at Busted Buy yesterday. The Big White is the comic story of an insurance scam set in snowy Alaska. If I were to put it in a nutshell, it's along the lines of Fargo meets Northern Exposure..... ;) ....sort'a.

If you're the audio obcessive type ready to boycott somebody, read no farther. For $12.99 you get no Dolby True. You're also entitled to no DTS Mah-ster, just your choice of Dolby 5.1 or DTS that might just be 2-channel....? Also, if you order now, you will not recieve Java Menus, BD-Live, any CGI, but the Resume feature will work on your BD player.

The disc does include sterling performances by Robin Williams, Holly Hunter (she looks like she had a nose job), Giovanni Ribisi (shouldn't he get a stage name with fewer vowells?), Woody Harrelson, Tim Blake Nelson, and Alison Lohman. The film includes nerotic disorders, fraud, fighting, guns, dead bodies, snowshoes, cash money, and blowing snow. All this set against the winter of the big white state on top governed by caribou barbie. You'll even see an actual caribou walk across the set.

This is the kind of BD the world wants now. First, it's a comedy that is actually funny. It's highly affordable in this recessive time. Finally, it's likely to actually play in every BD player on the market without performing a firmware upgrade, say hay!

Echo Bidge just became my hero. Big majors, take notice! This is how to do it.

but that would be a close out sale right ;)

I love Artie on Stern but his stand up and movie appearances do nothing for me.

Agreed.
Tried Beer League and his stand-up and was left mystified how someone so obviously untalented could get his 15 minutes (or even a job for that matter).

However, The Great White is a fun diversion.:)

Amazon has it for $8.95 now.

Don't even blink, buy a copy before they raise the list price to $38.95 like the big boyz..... ;)

I liked it so much that I'm gonna rewatch it this weekend. This morning I invited some friends over for it. This film is so-ooo much better than the "brand name" films I've seen lately.

I'm getting mine from Amazon for around $3.55 since I ordered the Echo Bridge Blu-Cube 20-Pack bundle for $70.95. I see that the bundle is now $78.95 so it is going up.

There was another thread about how low BDs could be sold for and still make a profit and it was felt that it was around $8 or so! Clearly Echo Bridge feels differently.

This movie is a lame Fargo ripoff. Robin Williams stopped being funny 10 years ago.

I am not alone in my feelings on this:

I saw it and thought it was average (still in the likable range). It was amusing, but I wouldn't say it was amazing by any means.

~$10 is about the right price for something like this.

At that price, it's hard to really go wrong -- even if you didn't really like it, you've not waste much... but if you end up loving it then getting something at that price is a real treat.

Robin Williams plays the part of straight man here. The big laughs are provided by other characters. It's not a Fargo rip-off! Fargo isn't a comedy.

I can imagine which 30% of the populace wouldn't like this film..... ;)

Rachael I am getting this just on your recommendation.

I don't think you'll be disappointed. I have not recommended a comedy to the forum since Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. This is the funniest new film I've seen since that one. I hope it cranks your tractor too! :)

Fargo isn't a comedy.

Yes and no. I have yet to find a Cohen Bros. movie that I didn't find comedic on some level. But, yeah, Fargo is certainly not light hearted, and I'd not want to see it marketed as a comedy.

The only thing the least bit comedic about Fargo is Steve Buscemi's quirky character and his conversations with his partner in crime. Even that is very slight. "I like pancakes". Well, Frances McDormand's character also can serve up a snicker like at the cafeteria. Whatever comedy is very between the lines. I think that's the level.

The Big White is a full-blown comedy. The biggest simularity between Fargo and Big White is the amount of snow on the ground. Maybe I should of described Big White as Northern Exposure on steroids? ;) Come to think of, Northern Exposure was on steroids too! ;)

I wasn't sure about this until you said you also recommended Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, which I loved, so now I'm giving this a shot. Also, if I can waste $30 experimenting on Balls of Fury, which was terrible, then I can surely take a chance on this one!

Btw, when I saw Fargo, I was expecting a comedy. I can't remember which magazine I was reading at the time, but the one I'm remembering was talking it up as such in their review. I know it wasn't a home theater mag and it was many years ago when I was a little more naive. Anyway, the point is I thought the movie was terrible. I remember thinking, a wood chipper is funny? I'll have to revisit this one now that I'm a little older and more mature (yeah, more mature).

I was a dumbass for a day and bought a copy of Balls Of Fury too. It sucked. I doubt even 12 year olds dug it...? Balls Of Fury wouldn't be a good buy for $12.99, $9, or even $1.99. They should use it in film school to demonstrate how not to make a comedy! ;)

The Big White would be a good value at a higher price that is stamped on it. Go for it! :)

I thought there were quite a few laughs in Fargo. Maybe I just have a warped sense of humor? I wouldn't call it a comedy, but I definitely laughed throughout.

P.S.-Balls of Fury.....well,it sucked balls :) Maggie Q is HOT though :)

All true, it's probably partly me. I even found many elements in No Country for Old Men funny (not the violence though). Just little things here and there. Barton Fink as well. We'll see about Burn After Reading. That is completely presented as a comedy in the trailers, but a friend who saw it said it was pretty brutal and didn't come off that way at all to him.

Anyway, ordered this on your recommendation as well. Robin WIlliams can overdo things for me as well, but I like him quite a bit when he's playing it straight as you say he does here.

Sadly, no. Only two occasions has my hair changed color, once when an ambitious girlfriend tried to make me blonder, and once a quick dye job for Halloween.

And I'm pretty averse to having anything stabbed through my body for non-medical reasons.

More just one of those bland people you pass by, who, if you saw into their minds, you might pass by from a substantially greater distance.

I loaned Big White to my mom over the weekend. She and her 2 buds loved it.

I got the impression reading Rachel's OP that this title has no lossless. To my surprise it says it has 5.1 PCM.

Rachael Bellomy
11-10-08, 09:40 PM
I'm not exactly sure what to make of the audio options. I don't think there is 5.1 PCM. The box lists 5 tracks. The menu lists 4:

5.1 Dolby
5.1 DTS
2.0 Dolby
2.0 PCM

I tried all. I believe they are all what they say they are....what's listed on the menu.

Rachael Bellomy
11-10-08, 10:48 PM
I put Big White on using my little system, which is the leftovers from my last upgrade. I used the 5.1 input on what used to be the heart of my system, a Marantz AV9000. I fed it with used to be the spleen of my theatre, a Panny BD10. I thought that the 2.0 PCM track sounded better than the 5.1 mixes. Little things like the cold, cold wind stood out to me as warm....;) ....and more detailed.

Finally got to watch this. It was an enjoyable flick, but definitely not a funnny movie IMO. There were a few parts that made me smile, but nothing remotely funny enough to make me snort coke. I doubt I will ever watch it again.

I replied to you in a hurry earlier because I had to take my elderly mom out to a hair appointment. I proably like Kiss Kiss Bang Bang a bit more too. Now, I wanna give you a hug to keep you off drugs.... ;)

Watch the film again in 2 weeks or a month and see if you think it's funnier. I've found that I should never rely upon one view or listen, if it's a music album, to form my opinion. There are days where our moods are not up to snuff and we can't appreciate things.

I hated the Constantine HD-DVD after one viewing. I hated it even more after the second look. I traded it for 8 DVD screeners with a reviewer who comes to this forum.

I'm stille suprised you didn't see as much noir in The Big White as in Kiss Kiss..... . I did.

I watched The Big White again with some company over the weekend. They liked it alot. The only big studio comedy I've seen this year that I thought was as funny as Blanca Grande was Tropic Thunder which I viewed last night.

I stille think the majors should be ashamed that they are hard-pressed to make great comedies these days. Then, there's the price of Big White! It's what a good 25 gig BD ought'a cost, or could. Well, for now, it might be the best Echo Bridge has to offer?

Thanks for recommending this movie. I got it at the $8.95 price. At first it was very quirky, maybe too quirky for my taste and then I found myself getting more immersed in the story. With very few lines Holly Hunter makes this movie and I enjoyed G. Ribisi's acting as well. I'll probably get flamed for this but I can't stand Robin Williams anymore yet I ended up enjoying this movie despite him being in it.

Hey, alot of us are a bit burned out on Robin Williams in zaney comic mode. IMO, he's a very good actor in other types of roles. I like his understated self here. In The Big While he does a few mildly funny things but he's, for all practical purposes, the straight man.

Ribisi is funny as hell in this, IMO. He is so much fun to dislike. How did did Echo Bridge manage to get hold of a film with Woody Harrelson, Holly Hunter, and a cute Elk in it? I don't know. The movie sure didn't taste like, "...rectal polyps"..... ;)

Did you see the film? It is a cut or many cuts above most Echo Bridge stuff. I saw Category 7, yuck. I've seen on TV a few of the things they're releasing, mostly sludge. However, this is a real movie with real tallent. The price is right, yeah! It demonstrates how over-priced all the major's 25 gig releases really are, IMO.
