Should be interesting to see what changes NFL Network has in store for us this year. The use of still photography into the broadcast was very interesting last year.

Will this game be available in HD locally? Any ideas if NFL Network is required to share this feed with the local network?

Yes, the HD feed is available to the locals.

(whether or not they are capable of actually broadcasting it is another story.... one would hope so at this point - just about all have done so in the last year or so)

Last year the NFL Network PQ was outstanding. I plan on invading a friend's house who actually pays for the channel. :)

edit: DD5.1 eh? Last year was 2.0 right?

I'm pumped for this year's games on NFLN now that Kermit The Gumble is gone!!

PQ was excellent last year and graphics were kept to a minimum.

i'm ready... papa is a HUGE upgrade over gumbel, and i fully expect the good pq and minimal graphics to continue... and the 5.1 can't help but be an improvement over last year's aq...

might even be a good game... quinn can't get an easier defense to start against... my grandmother could move the ball against the broncos...

I live in columbus ohio, and we are not part of the primary or secondary market of the cleveland browns, but we do receive a cleveland news station(no clue why) on time warner (WUAB), and in the guide says its going to be showing the game. Will this be blacked out in my area?

If you can get the station, you should be able to get the game (unless your cable system has some sort of deal set up to stop that from happening....)

Amen to that brother - talk about wrong guy for the job.
Gumby - go back to fake BS shows. That's what you do best.

Looking forward to the first Tnight on NFL

Should it switch by gametime?

Anyone watching NFL Network HD on Fios? I'm in Burlington, MA and the audio has been cutting in/out stuttering like crazy. Its practically unwatchable.

I don't notice this problem on the SD channel.

PQ is good though, but so what with this sound.

Well, there going to nothing but get bigger, and I imagine they have noone telling them they need to make it better.
I too am starting to very much dislike NFLN.
If they think they can charge us to watch games in a few years, while providing this type of poor audio they are crazy!

A little bit of pixelation on backgrounds during fast motion but the lack of obnoxious graphics (are you listening ESPN?) is great.

Gotta be a FIOS thing. I'm here in Germantown, MD and it's pretty bad. Like others have said, good PQ (almost up there w/ CBS) but weak audio and worse pixelation and sound cutout.

I think FIOS has had issues rolling out to their full 100+ channel lineup. Intially FXHD was doing this, now it's NFLN.

Man, the close-ups on D* are almost stunning!
If they would give us DD5.1 with no dropouts they'd win the Fans Choice award in a landslide.(though I haven't had any audio drops...just stereo sound :( )

Well after 30 mins on the phone with Tech Support at Verizon I explained to the guy the issues I was having along with those in Tampa, FL; Germantown, MD; and ;Irving, TX.

He seemed genuinely looking to help, but there seems to be too many factors involved to pinpoint the issue. Said that FIOS could be receiving NFL network on a different feed than other content providers, hence the issue on FIOS and not on other providers like D*.

He also, mentioned a guy would get back to me tomorrow because he was sending the information along to some other Engineers. Well see how it works out next week I guess.

there also seems to be the issue that their TX distribution node (Crawford in Atlanta) can't handle 5.1 at the present time

Getting pixellation a lot on FiOS here in Oregon. When it's not pixellating, the picture is great! I think it's the frequency that the NFL Network is on for FiOS that is having these issues.

Same thing on Comcast of Union NJ.

BTW, as a G-men fan, I am sad. Last night Romeo Crennel signed his resignation letter by being stupid and throwing the ball THREE! times, starting on 2nd and 1 with no one in the backfield to not EVEN do a play-action or something!!! And he still had TWO time-outs. But why I am sad as a G-men fan? Because Steve Spags, our Defensive Coordinator, will for sure be a coach in 2009...

Hello Mr. Fabiano,

I was very disappointed that the NFLN-HD coverage of the Denver vs.
Cleveland game last night did not have 5.1 channel Dolby Digital (DD) sound. This is an embarrassment to the network. Every other TV network that covers the NFL has DD sound. The suround-sound experience provided by DD is what gives the broadcast that "feel like you are in the stadium" touch. Is there any hope for DD sound on the NFLN-HD broadcast games this season? Thanks in advance for any insights.

Chris

ps. I know this is not an issue that you have direct control over, feel free to pass on my thoughts/inquiry to the powers that be.

Anyone who had FIOS issues with NFL-HD last night, I suggest you at least contact them so they understand the magnitude of the problem.

i'll call... that was horrid last night... it was driving me crazy, i even swapped out the hdmi cable on the (rare) chance the cable had gone bad...

it was on other channels last night as well (the basketball on tnt was a mess too), so i'm wondering if there might have been a bigger issue at work somewhere along the line...

i'm in south jersey, fwiw...

and yes, there's no excuse for no 5.1...

Since when was 2 channel stereo the same as 2.0 DD?

coyoteaz
11-07-08, 10:24 PM
All HD in the US uses DD audio. DD2.0 audio has a flag that determines whether it is stereo or surround. If the surround flag is enabled, the receiver knows to apply the correct processing to take the matrixed center/surround audio and route to the appropriate speakers. 2.0/DS audio is uncommon to find on a broadcast. It's most often present on DVDs, but it will occasionally pop up when a local station is running from the local side. IIRC, it was also used on some NBC content back when their metadata was set correctly.

Chris,

This isn't quite true. ESPN uses its bizzare Circle Surround instead of true discrete Dolby Digital 5.1 for NFL games on ESPN as well as sporting events on ABC and the other ESPN channels. Circle Surround is lame, but some may prefer it to two channel stereo.
