Full-power RTV affiliate WHDT West Palm Beach, Fla. (DMA 38), today announced that it will change to Weather Nation this weekend. WHDT will carry Weather Nation as its primary feed in full HD and on its translators and mobile feed.

WHDT owner Günter Marksteiner said: "After three major hurricanes, the value of local broadcast television became obvious as nearly everyone obtained their storm information from this one source. With cable and telephone lines submerged for weeks, broadcast radio and TV were the only news source for most of the area’s residents. As we face new weather scenarios every season, Florida viewers once again turn first to local TV."

IRVINE, Calif. - Freedom Communications Inc., owner of The Orange County Register, has agreed to sell its television division to Maryland-based Sinclair Broadcast Group Inc. in a $385 million deal that will leave the company and its newspapers free of debt, Freedom announced Wednesday.

The sale of Freedom's eight television stations, all of which are outside California, is expected to close in four to six months subject to Freedom shareholder, Federal Communications Commission and antitrust approval.

Isn't Sinclair the company that's been in a lot of controversial retransmission disputes and preempting programming because it doesn't agree with their political views?

Fun times ahead.

I had the SA8300 and traded it in for a Cisco box. I then had to get two more of them before I finally was able to get an SA8300, which I still have. I did like the Cisco box because it seemed to operate faster; but I kept having shows not record; which was unacceptable. I do think that it will be better when the software is updated to get rid of the issues they have. It seemed to me like the issues were worse on the Cisco than the SA box.

Got our letter in the mail a couple days ago from Comcast, looks like they are doing our HD/Digital upgrade on February 28th, 2012. They noted that we will need to get the digital adapters for any TV's that don't have a set-top box, and also the addition of more HD channels (they didn't say which one's but I'm assuming they are the same as everyone else is reporting in the Palm Beach area).

So it looks like the Delray Beach area has to wait a few more months for the upgrade, I'm assuming Boca will be around the same timeframe.

Apparently I had the new channels, at least I do now. This may only apply to TIVO boxes, but I had to re-boot to recieve the new channels.

In the past, I have received an on-screen message from TIVO indicating that new channels were available, no message this time. I did get a "channel not authorized" message for a channel (MLB) that I should get, so I re-booted. The new channels then appeared.

We had 2 Comcast SA8300 DVRs that we had few problems with. When one of them started acting up, I replaced it with the Cisco DVR. I immediately had problems with it, where it would record a show, but could only view the first half of it. This happened with one hour and half hour shows. I exchanged it for another Cisco DVR, since that is all they have available and this one is doing the same thing. Dive SA DVR when recording the same shows has no problems. Has anyone else experienced this? Is it a Cisco thing or possibly something else? Any help would be appreciated.

The DVR truncation problem should be fixed now. (depending on where you are) My box (SA 8300) recently got the software update. The software version is now:

S25p3.1109.r-27

If yours says the same, it has been updated. I haven't tested it yet (just noticed I got it yesterday) but from what I've read, others who have received it say the issue has been resolved.

This was posted on the Comcast blog on Dec. 5:

Customers in additional areas of Florida (with DVRs) are also currently scheduled to start getting the referenced guide software patch this week. The plan is to get the software patch to the majority of our Cisco-SA customers this year. Thanks for your continued patience.
Due to the large number of customers in the Comcast areas listed below, the software patch may be delivered over multiple nights. Schedules are subject to change.

FLORIDA - WEST PALM BEACH AREA:

Boca Raton, Boynton Beach, Bryant, Canal Point, Clewistown, Delray Beach, Ft. Pierce, Greenacres, Highland Beach, Hobe Sound, Indiantown, Jensen Beach, Jupiter, Lake Worth, Lantana, Loxahatchee, Moore Haven, North Palm Beach, Okeechobee, Pahokee, Palm Beach, Palm Beach Gardens, Palm City, Port Salerno, Port St. Lucie, Riviera Beach, Royal Palm Beach, Singer Island, South Bay, St. Lucie West, Stuart, Wellington, West Palm Beach.

Also from the Comcast blog:

If you want to verify that you have the software patch, you can check the version on your cable box. Using the silver Comcast remote control, press the Menu button twice, then select Setup, then Cable Box Set Up. Arrow down to Configuration and choose the Select to Display button. The line at the top should begin with S25p3 and end with r-27.

The software patch was specifically designed and prioritized to quickly address some of the most significant customer-impacting items, including:

1. Truncated DVR Recordings: Some customers were experiencing DVR recordings that ended early or were being significantly cut off

2. Not Authorized message on a HD Channel: Some customers were seeing a Not Authorized overlay occasionally on authorized HD channels that they were in fact authorized to watch. These Not Authorized incidences have been dramatically reduced.

3. Pass Through available as a HD resolution option via the HD Wizard screen. Pass Through works best using component cables.

I got the update. Now lets hope it works.

I haven't tested the DVR yet but I have some stuff set to record tonight that (since the problems started) would definitely get cut off. I guess I'll find out in a couple of hours. I'll post whether it succeeds or fails.

I did set up the HD pass through. That works the way that say it should.

If you're interested in setting that up and don't know how (and don't feel like poring over the Comcast blog) here's the "how to":

Here are the steps to activate HD Pass Through (once you have the patch):
The HDTV Setup Wizard allows you to select HDTV picture formats using an Easy or Advanced Setup mode.

1. Turn the set-top box power OFF, but make sure it is still plugged into an active power outlet.

2. Turn the TV ON.

3. Press HD ZOOM button on your remote. The HDTV Setup Wizard screen should appear. If this does not occur, press the Menu or Guide + Info buttons on the front of the set-top box at the same time.

4. Press the yellow A key on the silver Comcast remote control to start the setup.

5. You will then be prompted to press for A for Easy Setup Instructions or B for Advanced Setup Instructions. Select B.

The Advanced Setup Instructions allow you to choose from all available picture formats so you can have the set-top box automatically pass-thru the specific HD resolution of the currently tuned channel. After following the steps above for the HDTV Setup Wizard, press B for your widescreen 16:9 TV and then follow the on-screen instructions to select each of the picture formats.

The settings on your set-top box also need to be adjusted to ensure the correct resolution output for the channel you are watching.

1. Turn the set-top box power OFF, but make sure it is still plugged into an active power outlet.

2. Press Guide on your remote, or press the Channel Up and the Channel Down buttons simultaneously on the front panel of the set-top box.

3. Use the arrow buttons on your remote to adjust the video settings and resolution output.
Video Settings Configure the settings to your TV type. 4:3 Letterbox, 4:3 PAN/SCAN or 16:9 Wide-screen.
Resolution Output Configure the HDMI/YPbPr out to Pass Thru.

4. Press POWER to begin watching TV with your new settings.

Yes I am.

According to the Comcast blog there is an issue with the pass through and HDMI. If you check my post (#9047) I pasted a quote from their blog where they say it works best with component.

This is also from their blog on 12/8...

Currently we have seen and experienced inconsistent and mixed results using HDMI cables with different TV sets and different cable boxes.

This is unfortunate as we know a lot of our customers have HDMI connections built in behind walls for larger mounted TV sets or have a preference for using HDMI. The HDMI issue is scheduled to be addressed in a future release.

I was the person who posted this question to the Comcast blog. What I would like to know is if the HD Pass-through problem exists with both the Cisco and Scientific Atlanta boxes after the patch. It seems to me the patch was a failure if it doesn't work with HDMI. Does anyone have it work with the 8300HDC box connected via HDMI?

Seems strange that the passthrough feature worked with the old software via HDMI but they couldn't patch it to work with the new software. I was also wondering if the Cisco boxes worked with the patch as well and was considering switching boxes.

I have WMC (Windows 7) with just a direct coax from Comcast to a TV Tuner card and just recently all of the non-local channels from channel 20something on up are gone. The local digital/HD channels are still there, so for example FoxHD (29.1) is there but channels like Mtv, Food, HGTV are gone.

I think with Comcast moving to SDV, they've been allowed to encrypt just about all of their channels except for the "must carry" locals and such. I'm not sure there IS a fix other than using a CableCard tuner with the PC and even then, I think you'll still need one of Comcast's tuning adapter boxes.

I'm looking for a similar solution. I dropped Directv in May and went OTA only. I want to keep the Media Center interface and function and really haven't missed much of the paid programming I used to have, I've found that not having access to ESPN, Vs, FSN, and the NFL Network isn't something I want to continue with. It looks like CableCard might be my only option, it just sucks that the only way I can watch some NFL games and a good portion of the NHL season is to go right back to spending $60/mo for TV.

you need a digital adapter from Comcast, I am pretty sure you get 2 for free with your account, but with the adapter you don't get any HD(No 29.1, 34.1, etc)

We got all the new channels in Palm Beach Gardens 33410 back in the beginning of October.

Just as an fyi, if you are using a TIVO you need to manually add them to the Channel List.

from there, i had to go to advanced lineup selection... then i chose west palm beach digital rebuild extended.

It isn't, the guide so much as the operation of DVR software itself. I should have said i don't like the new software; which i thought was supposed to be upgraded I hate the way it changes channels to a new show being recorded and the difficulty changing settings with numerous drill downs.

Hey guys, remember how with the old guide we could record a show at a PARTICULAR TIME ONLY? So, if a show aired every day at 8 PM and then re-aired at 11 PM (or whatever) we could set the DVR to ONLY record the 11 PM show every night, but NOT the 8 PM show. Is there any way to do this now?

Thanks...

Did anyone else's cable stop working a little while ago? I lost both tv and Internet in Boca. Came back on after 11pm. These modern mega headend / hub systems work great until a major piece of equipement fails. Now they take out counties of viewers intead of one city/town.

Only way I have found is setting a manual recording. DVR menu -> Set a Recording -> Set a Manual Recording. Then you can specify a time frame.

My faviorite annoying feature is when pausing or rewinding a currently recorded show, causing you to watch it in a delay, kicks you out when the recording ends. A window breifly pops up saying it's unable to process the request. What, request? I didn't make one. Then you have to go back and restart the program and find where you left off.

With the TV on and STB off: Press GUIDE on remote. Scroll down to CC and change to ENABLED; Scroll to FOREGROUND COLOR under OPTIONS; Change AUTO to desired color with right arrow button; Scroll to SETTINGS and change from AUTO to USER. Push EXIT button.

Hello,
I have Comcast HD-cisco RNG150 RN box. What I want is to have the broadcast channels output from the box to the tv their correct resolution. For instance I want NBC in 1080i and Fox in 720p, etc. So here is the problem-
When I set the output res from the box to display both 1080i & 720p, the display (when I hit the HD zoom button on the comcast remote) says 720p, regardless of what station is tuned in , that is NBC shows up as 720p rather than 1080i.
If I use the 1080i setting only, everything shows as 1080i, which is what you expect it to do.
If I add 480p, then all stations show as 480p.
I know I have the box set for 1080i and 720p, but only get 720p.
Is there any way to set this so I can get both resolutions, depending on what the station is broadcasting?
Thanks much.

In order to use signal pass through (what you are asking to do) your box has to have the latest software patch. Without it, pass through will not work. So first, find find out if you have it.

Using the silver Comcast remote control, press the Menu button twice, then select Setup, then Cable Box Set Up. Arrow down to Configuration and choose the Select to Display button. The line at the top should begin with S25p3 and end with r-27.

If that is the case, you have the latest software.

To activate HD Pass Through:

NOTE:
Concerning using pass through, Comcast has reported they have seen and experienced inconsistent and mixed results using HDMI cables with different TV sets and different cable boxes. So, if you are using HDMI this still may not work correctly. If you are connecting with component you'll be fine. They said the HDMI issue is scheduled to be addressed in a future release.

I still have one SD set that's direct connect, so I ordered the DTAs and when they showed up I connected one to that set in the back bedroom... and I got a bunch more channels. I connected the second one to an HD set that's getting QAM and the rest of the channels with a direct connect and none of the HD local QAM's came through any more. So, that one stays off until I see what happens with the QAMs and locals if and when they switch.

Thanks for the directions, I checked and my software numbers don,t match yours. When I choose hdmi ypbpr, there is no option for pass through, only a choice of 720 or 1080. I called Comcast and they said that the box I have is the newest and does not allow for pass through. Who knows! Anyway I am going to leave it in the 720 setting, because I definitely can see a difference. It doesn't have anything to do with the box. It's the software on the box that makes the difference. Every box is going to get the software update but boxes with DVRs are getting the update first. So, if your box doesn't have a DVR (I'm unfamiliar with that model so I don't know if it does or not) that may explain why you didn't get the update yet. If it does have a DVR they just may not have gotten to your area yet.

This was on the Comcast blog on Dec. 5, 2011

Calling phone support at Comcast is pretty much pointless. They never have any idea what is going on. Go to the Comast blog (link below) and post your question (problem) there. Ted is pretty good at getting back to people quickly and will actually be able to let you know what's going on.

The switchover happened Feb 1st in my development(Hypoluxo & Turnpike) and DTA's are now required. Here's the rub, our HOA negotiated contract with Comcast includes HBO but we can't receive it on any tv's using the DTA's. Remove the DTA and we get HBO but not much else. Use the DTA's, get some extra channels but not the HBO we're paying for. Called up Comcast to bitch about it but the phone drones were too ignorant and couldn't comprehend my complaint.

You really have to give it up to Comcast for finding ways to increase their profit margin. Their new call centers are staffed with even lower life forms than previously thought possible. Anyone with an IQ above 50 quickly realizes they are wasting their time, hangs up and never calls again. That's definitely one way to reduce call volume.

So we've had the big switch to digital but we still don't have the new HD channels. Hoping it won't be too long now but the way Comcast operates, there's no telling. They've probably outsourced that aspect of their business as well and it could be awhile before we see anything new.

How do you get HBO without a cable box? Is it an analog channel? Comcast must be doing something special on the node serving your community because our analog premium channels have been gone for years.

As for why the DTA's can't receive premium channels. The DTA's only tune digital channels and use an encryption scheme different from all the other digital channels the digital cable boxes receive. Comcast probably doesn't want to setup the channel just for a few areas and their contact with HBO may prohibit it. Your community is probably going to have to get in touch with your contract rep to put some pressure on Comcast.

LRZNole, I received a letter giving a date of 2/28/12. I'm further east so it may not pertain to you. We'll see. Comcast is usually late so it may still be months away.

Is it an analog channel?

Before Adelphia went tits up and we were sold off to Comcast we had 3 unscrambled channels of HBO. Shortly after the takeover, Comcast removed about 20% of the premium channels we used to get and one of the unscrambled HBO channels.

I posted this question twice on the Fort Lauderdale/Miami forum but did not get a reply, so I am posting it here because this seems a more used forum based on the number of postings. I'm sure that someone on this forum will give me an answer!

I recently bought my sister who lives in Coral Springs FL a TV for her 50th birthday and I'd like to get her an indoor HDTV antenna. I've heard that TERK antennas are good, but there are so many different types of TERK antennas that I don't know which one to get. If there are any other brands that I should look at, I can do that too. I just need a little advice from people who have experience using indoor HDTV antennas.

Thanks for your help.

I have the Terk HDTVi Antenna Pro (non-amplified) which I use only for backup if the cable goes out. I live about 40 miles from the W. Palm Beach area and the last time I used it, I was able to receive about twenty OTA channels. I had it standing on a cabinet about 4' high in the middle of the house (concrete construction). It also worked just as well when my windows were covered with hurricane panels. I was amazed on its ability to pull in these channels. There is also an amplified version of this antenna.

I have read that there no great difference between the amplified and non-amplified but I have no experience with the amplified. There is also the inconvenience of having to plug it in to the AC.

Thanks for the advice. You all have been great.

Coming soon to my east-central Palm Beach County condo:

Comcast cable is changing its analog broadcasting to digital on March 6th. Any TV that is not connected to a converter box will need a digital-to-analog adapter after March 6th. Our contract allows for each unit to receive 2 digital-to-analog adapters and 1 cable converter box. The digital-to-analog adapters do not allow for viewing of video on demand, HBO, etc.

I did not receive any direct communication from Comcast, i.e., e-mail, insert with my bill, etc., so take it for what it's worth.

The switchover happened Feb 1st in my development (Hypoluxo & Turnpike) and DTA's are now required. Here's the rub, our HOA negotiated contract with Comcast that includes HBO but we can't receive it on any TV's using the DTA's. Remove the DTA and we get HBO but not much else. Use the DTA's, get some extra channels but not the HBO we're paying for.

You can use an old analog cable box or a VCR as a dedicated tuner to convert the DTA's RF output to AV. This will free up the TV's RF input for the analog HBO and a few unencrypted HD channels. You can also get a dedicated one channel tuner like this one:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&_trksid=p4340.l2557&item=370335969797&nma=true&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&rt=nc&si=avS1hMyVtUpTXtE938O01uHm4mo%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc

However, $75 is way too much for what it does.

I've just spent the last 2 weeks going around and around with Commiecast, trying to figure out why the new HD channels were not available on my new cablecard (switched from UVerse). The website and printed channel guide say the channels were available by 11/15/2011. Every rep I spoke with confirmed those channels were available.

After many, many, calls and emails, I finally got a call from someone named Dominic from the local office that the new HD (384, 387-399, 430, 441-443, 452-500) channels will finally be added on or about March 9th.

I am in the Hypoluxo/Turnpike area.

Our latest network enhancement is complete. A Comcast digital device is now required on this TV set to continue receiving this channel. Please call 1-877-xxx-yyyy to order your digital equipment. Thank you.

Thanks...

Hmmm...So you want the later showtime??? Is the earlier one conflicting with some other recording or do you only want one recording of an episode not two... If so, just set the recording option to "New episodes Only" and you will get only the showtime when the new episode is aired FIRST, ie the later 11pm show will not get recorded as well...

Tivo has lowered their monthly cost, so I am considering getting rid of my SA DVR. I seem to recall that it requires a card from Comcast and that there is no charge from Comcast for that. Is that correct? Does Tivo work nicely on Comcast? I used to have an SD Tivo and loved it.

Guys...I'm new to the local HD thing.

I need the channel above. I currently have to pay about $80 a month just to get the right tier (and that is after getting a deal after pretending to cancel), HD, gear rental etc via directv.

So what do I need to get this channel? And pref Fox Soccer + too.

I have a PS3, Roku and Google TV. I have 2 HDTV's and one HD 90 inch projector.

Any advice would be appreciated! I don't have an anenae etc, and I live in Port St Lucie Florida 34953. I am eyeing up the online version fox soccer to go but I could not get the video to run on Google TV.

MrBoss:

I actually had someone from the corporate office in WPB call me back regarding this. I am in West Boca and like you have been patiently waiting. What he told me is they are a few weeks away (spoke with him last week) and that it should be no longer than 6 weeks before it is finished. He said I would be "very happy" with the new amount of HD channels that will be added.

I am not holding my breath but it was what he told me and it wasn't a random CSR in another state he is local and seemed to know what was going on in Palm Beach County.

I use to live downtown FTL and it was upgraded a while back due to being on the different system.

Anyways now I live in east Boca and just yesterday they stuck fliers in our doors stating that due to our HOA agreement with Comcast blah blah blah they will be onsite nextweek at the clubhouse to give out the new digital boxes as the standard channels will be going digital.

THis is great news as I was missing stuff from living in FTL. My comcast leased modem actually just crapped the bed last night so I ordered a nice new Motorola sb6121 with DOCSIS 3.0. Hopefully my speeds improve as the old modem was so old and might not even have been docsis 2.0 compatible.

Understand that the digital boxes that they're going to give out are likely going to be the ones that simply replace the "direct to TV" analog connection. I got those boxes, and while I did get extra channels, all the QAM HD locals that I was getting over the base cable are no longer there, so I don't think you'll have any HD at all with those digital boxes.

Just a suspicion, but let us know what you do get.

I think they may have completed the upgrade for the Boca area. Our office has cable and it now says on certain channels that the upgrade is completed and you need the adapter.

MartyS
05-02-12, 06:15 PM
Yeah, I'm at Powerline and Glades and I still have all the stations up to 67. But then again, I don't want them to go away, since I only have basic cable as a backup, and the digital boxes they give you won't pass thru HD locals.

I was having the same DVR problem as everyone else here. It was still out at of 1:00 am. I checked it at 9:00 am before I left the house and it was back to working normally. Didn't do anything but wait. I would imagine it's working for everyone now.

Side note: I did notice that when I click the "menu" button, the bar that pops up is now populated with new icons. (A house, a film projector) The "ON" ondemand icon is missing. Not sure when this changed but it had to be pretty recently.

Ok kind of a head scratcher...

On my second tv in the bedroom, I have been using the Qam tuner to get whatever is coming straight thru the coax pipe.... interestingly there are some channels that I dont readily see on the Sa8300 box on my main tv..

Comcast is offering both an HD Settop box and a Digital Adapter as part of their upgrade package to our association... What would be my best option or should I just split the coax and use the Hdbox for most channels and the Qam for those offbeat channels my wife likes>> Will all this change once they do the Boca upgrade??
