View Full Version : Linksys powerline adapter for media streaming
keithl1967 11-08-08, 11:40 AM I recently purchased a powerline adpater kit (Linksys PLTK300) to connect my MP101 in my garage (wireless range was a question on the MP101, so I thought I'd connect it via powelrine adapter).
I have no connectivity issues (with little configuration, connected ot my network without issue).
The problem I NEED to solve:
While it connects to my router (and therefore my wired PC), it does not connect to my laptop (which is connected wirelessly to the router). My HR21 and HR20 (DIRECTV) connecte and read the media on the laptop, so I know that the issue is not the network, but rather the powerline devices.
I know this because when the MP101 would connect wirelessly (before dropping out and rebooting), it would also read the Laptop then.
Any suggestions...Linksys support has been less than terrible (hung up on two times after being on hold for 20+ minutes.

Figured it out...the laptop was listed under a different workgroup name--odd that it still was seen and worked on the network with other devices, but it works now!
Stan_Ipkis 11-11-08, 11:52 AM I don't have wireless anymore, but do you have any comparisons between the wireless and power-line, a simple speed test report perhaps? I'm curious.

I do not have areport per se, but they both seem to have there pros and cons:
My powerline connects to the network anywhere between 19-23 mbps, and my wireless, within 30 feet or so of the router (NETGEAR g) connects between 40 and 54 mbps.
I have not had a single "dropout" over th epowerline, though; whereas, I have had dropouts (loss of signal) over the WiFi at random times when streaming music.
I have only used my netwrok for streaming music, and some photos, but never video. the performance that I have received form th eowerline is fine, but I suspect that if I wre trying to stream video, espescially HD, I would run into real problems with only 23 peak mbps...
Stan_Ipkis 11-15-08, 12:52 PM Well, I haven't tested the bandwidth of the powerline, but I'm way happier with powerline over wireless, and yes, I used to stream audio over the wireless and it skipped and dropped and paused and buffered and all that good stuff...but the powerline has been glitch free and great.
I now stream video and audio over it, and it hasn't missed a beat, watched over 20 hours of 1080i along with audio and the only glitches have been in media server software on the HTPC.
I live in CA so I don't have an air conditioner and most appliances aren't used when we're watching TV, so I don't know if line noise impacts performance, but I'm all for powerline as a reliable, fast home networking solution.
