View Full Version : Berkline 78 Power Recline Problems
VA HDman 11-08-08, 06:01 PM One of my Berkline chairs is not functioning. It will extend, but it won't retract back into the upright position. I first thought it was the switch. I flipped the chair over and removed the switch from the arm. In doing so I noticed that the Power Control Box would "click" whenever the switch was depressed - in either direction. So I'm not sure it is the switch. I removed the power control box, open it and examined the connections. One of the connectors on the control board appears to be loose (broken). It looks like this my be the problem. Does anyone have any experience with this to confirm my assumptions. Again, the chair extends but will not retract back to the upright position. There are no grinding sounds or any other sounds out of the ordinary. Thanks
Where did you purchase them? They may be able to help. If not, I found Roman (rsh) to be invaluable when we were having power problems. He fixed us right up. Or you can call Berkline directly.
Good luck!
VA HDman,
You should diagnose the problem first.
There are 3 components that participate in power recline:
1. Switch with the wires
2. Power transformer
3. Actuator.
First, check whether one of the wires got caught in the reclining mechanism and got cut. Second, unplug the wires from the transformer and plug them back in. If this does not help get the transformer from a working chair and test it on the malfunctioning one. If this fixes the problem you would need a replacement transformer. If not, the chances are this is an actuator.
The power recline has one year warranty. If you are under warranty the dealer you have purchased it from should get you a repaplacement part. If the warranty has expired you can purchase the part from any Berkline dealer.
Hope it helps.
lalithaparam 11-23-08, 11:23 AM I just got my Berkline 45004 and have put all 3 I ordered together. They have power recline. They are brand new. I cannot get the power recline to work. I went to the berkline website and it talks about 2 plastic pieces that supposedly prevent the recliner from moving during transportation, but inspite of looking carefully I cannot find them. These need to be removed apparently for the recliner to work. Please help.
Param.
There is no plastic pieces that "supposedly prevent the recliner from moving during transportation" as far as I know, unless the berkline have changed something recently.
Have you spoke to a dealer who sold you the chairs?
lalithaparam 11-23-08, 01:00 PM I guess the FAQs speak about a swivel recliner at the berkline website. Any ideas why none of the 3 chairs are reclining. I have plugged the chair to the power outlet via the transformer but get no movement or noise when I press the forward or recline buttons on any of the chairs?
Param.
lalithaparam 11-23-08, 01:02 PM I purchased it from Stargate online and put it together today, and as they are closed I haven't talked to them yet. Do you think they are defective? All three?
Param.
I do not think so. Have you connected the wires coming from the switch and the actuator to power transformer correctly? Did you check whether you have power in your outlets?
KenLerch 11-23-08, 03:55 PM Feel free to PM me here or use our contact page on our site and I'll try to help you troubleshoot.
lalithaparam 11-23-08, 10:31 PM I feel like a fool. I only connected one of the wires to the transformer, thinking the other wire was a telephone cord. It is working. Sorry if I wasted your time.
Param
It happens with all of us... :)
KenLerch 11-24-08, 04:24 PM at least that was a very easy solution! Glad it's working and hope you're enjoying your new seats!

My Berkline chair has just done the same thing as yours. It will extended out but will not retract back. Any luck on fixing it? What was the solution?
oman321 11-25-08, 02:59 PM One of my chairs did the same thing one time. At first I flipped it and the chair next to it over and connected the motor from that one to the other, hoping that it would close and it did with the other one's switch. Then of course I had to try it again and see if it was a fluke so I extended it again and it didn't close once again, so I repeated and closed the chair. Then I was trying to trouble shoot it and I disconnected the switch which connects with a phone jack, when I reconnected it everything was back to normal and I havent had any problems since.
VA HDman 01-08-09, 01:30 AM Sorry to be so delinquent in replying to my own post--I've been traveling during the holidays.:o After a close inspection it appeared that there was a short in the power transformer. Roman was very kind to provide a replacement unit. Thanks again Roman. :) Terrific customer service!!
Once the jet lag and airline induced flu wore off, I replaced the transformer. The chair will extend but will not retract. I may need to do what Oman321 suggests and cross connect the switch form another chair. Unfortuately, this chair is the right hand unit in a love seat. The switch cable from the adjoining chair is not long enough and the switch will need to be removed in order to run the test. It may be easier just to buy an extra switch, unless someone has a wiring diagram for the switch (in which case I can just make a jumper cable). Has anyone seen a wire diagram for these switches?
Thanks
VA HDman,
Have you tried to switch the actuator to see if you have a faulty one on the chair that is malfunctioning?
VA HDman 01-09-09, 04:19 PM I haven't tried to switch the actuator. Is it typical for an actuator to fail only in one direction? I had hoped to determine the switch wiring diagram so I could create a simple jumper to test the switch. Barring that, its about the same amount of work to pull a switch from another chair as it is the actuator. Anyone have a recommendation for which one I pull first? Odds? Bets?
My money is on which ever one I don't do first.
Try the actuator. It should be fairly easy to replace, and it is more likely to cause the problem than the switch.
VA HDman 01-09-09, 06:17 PM Thanks Roman. It's also more expensive, so given my luck with Murphy's Law trying it first should increase the odds that I'll need to replace the cheaper switch.
I'll check it out this weekend.
Aren't your chairs under warranty?
VA HDman 01-21-09, 10:44 AM What do you think, bought them from you in the fall of 2007? What is the coverage on the actuateor?
I ended up swapping actuators with another chair. Oddly, both chairs work now.
This is troubling becasue I'm fairly confident that it wasn't a loose connection before I swapped the actuators - this is because I disconnected and reconnected all of the connectors at least three times when I was trouble shooting the problem. I even pulled the actuator out of the frame and looked it over to see if I could determine if something was causing it to bind. After all of that it still didn't work. Now it does.
I now have the "questionable actuator" in a different chairs, the second row corner position (i.e., this chair is typically not used until the theater is full). Because I seperated the switch and actuator it will be easier to determine which was casuing the problem, if I start seeing one of these two chairs fail.
Thanks for you help.
kmcconn9 03-04-09, 11:40 AM Does a anybody have the wiring diagram for the power recline switch? One of mine got cut in half somehow and I cant find the RJ45 which was originally plugged in to match the wires back.
Thanks!
VA HDman 03-04-09, 06:07 PM Sorry, I don't have the diagram, however when I had my problems I received a quote for a replacement switch. I don't recall the exact figure but I seem to remember it was less than $20. Alternatively, you could remove the switch from a working chair and use a volt/ohm meter to create a wiring diagram.
kmcconn9 03-05-09, 03:40 PM Yea, I could do that, but I guess what I am really looking for is the type of connector that is used for this switch. I found out last night that it is not a RJ11, it looks like an RJ9...
RJ9's seem to be hard to find around my area....
