View Full Version : Contrast calibration on different players...

I have used my DVD HD Basics on 3 different players. The Panasonic BD30 BD player (HDMI) and a Panasonic basic DVD Player (S-Video) and a Sony DAV-HDX475 HTIB Upscaling DVD player (HDMI).

The BD30 was my first experience with using the Reverse Greyscale Ramps to set my Contrast. As per the instructions, I can increase the Contrast to the point where I am able to force the top 2 or 3 bars of white to blend together (clip) and then lower to make them look different levels on the screen in order to make them delineated per the instructions with DVE.

The basic DVD player over S-Video I discovered I could not get the top bars to blend no matter what I did. Regardless of Contrast control setting, the ramps more or less looked the same but the overall brightness of the screen/pattern I was viewing simply got brighter or dimmer. I assumed this was an S-Video thing.

Then I thought I would try to calibrate from my newer Sony Upscaling player over HDMI. The DAV-HDX475 says it does 1080p upscaling. To my suprise, it exhibited the same behaviour as the basic DVD player. The ramps are fully dilineated to the very top of the white scale in that pattern. No matter how high the Contrast I cannot get it to clip. I played with Black mode on and off. I played with HDMI RGP versus the HDMI YCbCr setting. No combination of settings changed this from within the player. This is very strange.

So oddly enough, with Contrast 100% on my TV, the scales look dilineated on the 2 DVD players. For me to replicate the look of the ramps on my BD30, I have to lower the Contrast to 60. My BD30 is outputting 7.5 IRE supposedly as I am in the default LIGHT mode (although I am not sure that matters over HDMI). Everything is default on the BD30.

Any feedback on this is apprecieted.
