View Full Version : 5.1 to 7.1 and I am lost

So, what should I use now for my audio formats now that I have leaped into the world of 7.1?
Example
For blu ray, I know that I should select the 7.1 codecs when they are available. But what do I use when I am watching 5.1? How does that work?
But when I was using PLII for my SD TV, what should I use now?
Music streaming over the 360 or PS3?
FM Stereo?
I am using an Onkyo 605 for the receiver.
tokerblue 11-10-08, 09:34 PM - If only have a 5.1 source, you should use Dolby Pro Logic IIx to matrix the 5.1 signal to 7.1. As for music, the choice is yours. I prefer to listen to music in stereo since that is usually the original format. It's your choice.
Dugout Doug 11-10-08, 09:39 PM Can I change that with the True HD pcm out from the PS3 to the onkyo?
tokerblue 11-10-08, 09:49 PM You would normally just send multichannel PCM from the PS3. Your receiver would apply the post processing. I just remembered that the Onkyo 605 will not apply Dolby Pro Logic IIx to a multichannel PCM signal. You will not be able to get 7.1 with your receiver with that type of signal. It's a limitation of your receiver.

Time to upgrade? Ahh, such is life....
sdurani 11-11-08, 01:02 PM more money right? :)Not much more, if at all. Check out the Onkyo 606 or, even better, the 706 (better room correction).

On top of sales, add 10% off, then another $10 off for first time subscriber at ShopOnkyo. I think these are refurbed.
TX-SR706S - $350
TX-SR806S - $440
TX-SR876S - $800
TX-NR906S - $890
*I use a refurbed 805. While it works great, has recent FW version, it didn't come with an Audyssey mic!!! I had to pay $18 shipped, IIRC. Maybe if I complained more they would have sent it for free, but my initial complaint was to no avail....
Dugout Doug 11-14-08, 12:39 PM Is that 706 that much of an improvement over the 606 to justify $150-200 more?
mogulman1 11-17-08, 01:46 AM I have an 806 and I am still a little confused about what type of processing to use. I've read a few threads, but it seems like there are a lot of different opinions.
It seems like:
- Dolby Digital 5.1 Movie/TV: Prologic IIx Movie, or THX Ultra2 Cinema (Not sure which is better)
-2 Channel Movie/Tv: Prologic IIx Movie
-2 channel Stereo Music: ??? Prologic IIX Music (some people say it puts too much sound in the center speaker), ??? THX Ultra2 Music? (Haven't seen any opinions on this). Some Onkyo DSP settings (Studio Mix, etc, based on PLIIx)? Not sure what is best for Stereo Music
-MPCM from a PS3 - Not entirely sure on this. Seems like the main option on the receiver is Multichannel. Does this mean the PS3 is decoding the audio so I can't really modify it using the AVR? Basically, take it like the PS3 is putting it out?
