the "artificial and digital" look of DLP vs the "smooth and natural" image from LCOS ?

View Full Version : does anyone have scans (screen captures) that illustrate frank bavaro 11-11-08, 10:07 AM the "artificial and digital" look of DLP vs the "smooth and natural" image from LCOS ? Lawguy 11-11-08, 10:47 AM I wonder whether a screenshot would capture the difference. I don't know that I would call dlp "artificial" and the word "digital" probably has different meanings to different people. It kind of makes film material look a little more like video than film. Does that make any sense? It is a very subtle difference that I know is there but find it very hard to describe. Am I alone in this? frank bavaro 11-11-08, 10:52 AM i am trying to "see" the differences - i can't find both technologies demo-able under the same roof where i live - i am on the list for a rs20 , coming from a sharp 720p DLP machine - i want to make sure LCOS is for me - i will watch HD sports and BLURAY movies on the projector - Lawguy 11-11-08, 10:59 AM I went from a Sharp 12k to an RS1. I liked both. The DLP camp questions whether LCOS is sharp (it is!). The LCOS camp calls DLP "artificial" looking (it isn't!). I actually like both. To me, LCOS is more like something you will see in a typical movie theater. DLP looks a little more like video. It is almost as if the picture is the slightest bit exaggerated. I would personally not make a decision based on this particular technology difference. There are others that are much more important to me. frank bavaro 11-11-08, 11:11 AM what about these factors - basement bat cave- completly darkened and light controlled space - stewart 110" greyhawk screen - Alan Gouger 11-11-08, 11:17 AM Frank where do you live? frank bavaro 11-11-08, 11:18 AM staten island , ny Lawguy 11-11-08, 11:25 AM what about these factors - basement bat cave- completly darkened and light controlled space - stewart 110" greyhawk screen - It sounds to me like you will really like an RS20. Lawguy 11-11-08, 11:35 AM I live in Long Island, Frank. I am in the first wave of RS20s. You are welcome to come over and check it out once I get it. I grew up on SI. frank bavaro 11-11-08, 11:48 AM awesome gesture - thank you - please let me know - pottscb 11-11-08, 12:28 PM i am trying to "see" the differences - i can't find both technologies demo-able under the same roof where i live - i am on the list for a rs20 , coming from a sharp 720p DLP machine - i want to make sure LCOS is for me - i will watch HD sports and BLURAY movies on the projector - You would probably have better luck viewing LCOS under the same roof as LCD...Magnolias has Sony SXRDs and just now got the Mitsubishi 6500 (I watched both and there was very little apparent difference except SXRD MIGHT have had slightly better blacks and the Mitsu MIGHT have been a touch sharper...people are telling yo the truth when they say that the performance gap and difference between the technologies is diminishing. I can honest say (flexibility of my room aside) I'd be happy with the picture thrown by almost every 1080p pj produced in the last year. Art was right last year when he said we've crossed a critical milestone in black levels (and image quality in general), and that most people wouldn't be concerned with the difference in blacks or contrast between the high end models and the less expensive models. They are so close that you'd be way better off investing an monetary difference saved between the inexpensive ones and the expensive ones on controlling ambient lighting, darkening room furnishings and a good (for your individual setup) screen. I know others are more critical, but their room setups are also probably far better... |
